There are people who unironically get upset at the harms caused by IP laws who also unironically get upset at the fact that AI runs afoul of them and I find that very funny.

This is dumb on so many levels. Supermarkets already run on razor thin margins, so all this will do is raise prices for everything to adjust for the discount, resulting in everyone feeling forced to use self checkout to not feel ripped off. If you hate using self checkout, this is terrible.

Freethinkers United For Change@freethinkersunite.bsky.social

Some people, if you ever suggest that people exist that are bad with money, will simply assume that you hate poor people for some reason. I guess we're supposed to pretend the people in crippling debt despite making 6 figures because they live above their means don't exist.

It's really not that hard to believe the following all at the same time. If you struggle with this, you got some other shit going on you need to deal with: 1) Antisemitism is wrong. Islamophobia is also wrong. 2) Israel does some fucked up shit. Hamas is also terrible.

A lot of discourse here boils down to "leftists getting mad at normie libs for fighting fascism because they deeply need the solution to fascism to be 'the revolution' and the normie libs are ruining that"

1) A plain whopper sandwich at my local Burger King is like $7 now. 2) Computer hardware prices are through the roof. 3) Rent, which is already very high, continues to climb with no relief in sight. Are we SURE the vibecession is just vibes?

I wonder if the issue is that the data as a whole looks good but this doesn't capture what changing conditions materially look like for, say, the bottom 20%. The above is all stuff I could weather, but can everyone?

Corporations are made up of people, though. The whole legal fiction of "corporations are people" exists to ensure that Constitutional rights of PEOPLE can't be violated simply because they were acting within a corporate context.

Abdul El-Sayed@abdulelsayed.bsky.social

Corporations are not people. Their money is not speech. They should not be able to buy politicians. End Citizens United.

I'm sure the people who refused to vote for Kamala Harris "because of Palestine" are patting themselves on the back. How many dead people is your egotistical feeling of moral purity worth?

Frank Conniff@frankconniff.bsky.social

“I’m not voting for anyone because I oppose genocide.” Guess what, no you don’t.

FYI, I'm only gonna read your gift article if I don't have to create an account to see it. Otherwise, they are just asking for payment in data and a new target for spam.

Gotta love the little whataboutism at the end here. Was a good post until that last part. One can criticize more than one thing at the same time, and doing so does not imply they are *equally* bad.

So, Trump's biggest benefactor, Elon Musk, is a eugenicist & white supremacist who supports Germany's AfD, which promotes neo-Nazi ideologies. The State Department hires a Nazi enthusiast Nate Hochman as the Trump Administration unveils Nazi uniforms for Space Force. Oh well let's condemn Piker.

this was early enough that it was very insightful and is now sort of transparently true if you think the gizmo isn't useful you're ignoring most major software project and all computer security professionals, you basically have to spit on expertise as a concept

antivax movement but it’s left coded and targets machine learning, artificial intelligence, and engineering fields

People that seem to live in a liminal space between irony and sincerity do so because they are terrified of the vulnerability that comes with sincerity.

Seems like a problem a friendly male student could fix with their fist pretty quickly. And those glasses seem to be both expensive and trivial to break.

Maggie Harrison Dupré@mharrisondupre.bsky.social

NEW: Teen boys are using smart glasses — mainly Meta's AI Glasses — to film themselves harassing classmates at school, following girls around and "rizzing" them or "ragebaiting" them w/ insults. In several videos we reviewed, girls plead w/ the poster to stop filming. futurism.com/artificial-i...

It's historical and predictable is what it is.

The evolution from "well the guy Luigi killed was the CEO of a notoriously bad health insurance company" to "anyone with the title of CEO, including at a liberal nonprofit, is homo sacer and can be killed without regret" is uhh Uhhhhhhhhhh

the fact that "rare books" often means "rare texts" is a policy outcome of our copyright law and it doesn't need to be that way

If the AI water issue were real, it'd be easy to go to people's homes that were actually affected by the normal operational water draw of a data center. Instead, MPU always chooses: 1) Places polluted by construction 2) Protestors without data centers nearby 3) Pecan farmers It's been over a year

Putting aside his overdramatic commentary, is he broadly wrong? For anxiety and fear in particular, treatment is typically exposure to the thing so that you can rack up experiences with it that do not result in harm, reorienting your subconscious.

This treating of racism as like a taint that permanently scars an institution irredeemably is, I hope, what people are talking about dispensing with when they shit on Woke 1.0. Would be unobjectionable if presented merely as a history of racism in the rock music genre instead of saying "defined"

It is a moral failure to see a country slide into fascism and have no emotional reaction to that fact, to regard it is neutral background noise, to not really care. It indicates a broken character.

The question is if that perspective is true or not, though. If it's not, the core issue fix is to find out why people think that it is, not "let's start the new communist revolution"

if I was a young person being told that the best our economic system can ever offer me is working longer and longer hours to live with more and more roommates and eat worse and worse food, I might start getting this crazy idea that we need a new economic system

There are two separate dimensions that people here and elsewhere keep conflating: 1) Willingness to fight fascism. 2) Position on the left-right political compass.

I do eat meat but I try to eat less of it and avoid certain animals because I do think vegans have a bit of a point. But I still think PETA is absurd and stupid and does a lot of damage to their own (alleged) agenda.

I don't in fact think the Democrats need to cater to a minority of political radicals in order to take a bold stance against fascism, and if you do, I immediately suspect you're one of the political radicals in question.

So much confusion is caused by people using the word "rights" to mean both legal rights and moral rights and waffling between the two without ever clearly drawing the distinction and indicating which one they mean.

I don't know if it counts as "niche" but it certainly gets people upset at you online, but I think it's wrong to dance on the graves of the dead even if they were bad people.

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

One thing you can see in the latest Stancil blowup is that a sizable share of this website thinks that good intentions are the only thing that matter in policymaking, and expressing skepticism that a policy will really work as intended is equivalent to stealing food from the poor.

Just one up her and say the government should just give the food away instead of charging for it, and if she objects, claim she doesn't understand that people need to eat.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Man this is awful. This was a sincere question. I was happy with the discussion that came out of it. But I wake up this morning to nonstop abuse, because one of Bluesky’s cult-like figures has (pretty unfairly) attacked me as not understanding people need food. This isn’t good or sustainable!

IMO this election is less Talarico vs Paxton and more Talarico vs "Vote R No Matter Who".

James Downie@jamescdownie.bsky.social

New TX Senate poll by Texas Public Opinion Research (7/15-7/17, ±3.4%): Talarico 45% (-2% from May) Paxton 40% (-4%) "Paxton’s 40% vote share is the lowest he has received in a public poll post-runoff."

I think he kind of has a point, despite being a complete prick. Imagine if your computer, or printer, or any other tool morally assessed what you were using it for and denied you access. That's a pretty dystopic outcome liberals should want to avoid.

Anil Dash@anildash.com

Just in case you still use any Basecamp products, DHH is crashing out about his AI product gently pointing out that it’s bad for him to have extermination fantasies about the Roma people.

1) This is precisely why anyone of public note should not even engage with Fuentes. It encourages others to do the same. Hunter was wrong to do this interview. 2) You're scum for platforming this Nazi fuck in a positive light.

Kratom and its effects is a great argument *against* the libertarian idea that such substances should be sold as freely as bread, napkins, etc. rather than heavily regulated with mandated warnings and sold by specific businesses that indicate to the user exactly what they are getting into.

Exhibit 376 that it's a moral panic. Comparing light industrial buildings occupying a tiny percentage of the overall available land to the dust bowl.

Jesspooka Kant 🎃@jessdkant.bsky.social

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.
