I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

🇧🇷 Lula and Sócrates, in the early 1980s. Sócrates played for Corinthians, the São Paulo club supported by Lula, who at the time was one of the leaders of the ABC metalworkers' union. In #Brazil, a military regime was in power at the time. 👇

Done. Grudgingly, frankly - but done. ✅ I beg #bcpoli for electoral reform.

On the one hand, I think we have to regulate scams to have a hope of rebuilding institutions. On the other hand, could not happen to more deserving people.

Years after boycotting Bud Light and purchasing "100 percent woke-free" beer, MAGA beer drinkers are still waiting for their orders to be fulfilled. One of them, a cop, tells @milesklee.bsky.social he wants jail time for the right-wing consultant who ripped them off: www.wired.com/story/bud-li...

Our hopelessly corrupt leaders are speeding us face-first into fascism, and those whose job is to oppose them are too timid - or complicit - to put their foot on the brake.

"This hatred, it’s like a cancer. It spreads because people will always say, ‘Oh, it’s just the illegals.’ It’s not. “From what I experienced, it was anyone who was remotely different, different creed, different colour, different sexuality.” www.theargus.co.uk/news/2665180...

Well, she called a fake, costly, illegitimate 'referendum' as a PR stunt. And lost, badly. So...

On CBC News Network just now, @markusoff.bsky.social notes Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is MIA tonight: “Where in this you might ask is Danielle Smith? … the premier has no public plans, there’s no camera. We don’t really know where she is”

Just, the 24% need to move to the US and put the rest of us out of their misery.

CBC calls the Alberta referendum for remain in Canada with 76% of ballots voting to remain in Canada

Not at all the point - this is disgusting, illegal and entirely reprehensible - but big LOL at 'try to intimidate' police officers, who very famously shit themselves when confronted with say, a Black man with a cellphone or hearing-aid, or a sandwich. Let alone a school-shooter.

Headquarters@headquartersnews.bsky.social

Leaked audio: Michigan Republican Mike Rogers asking for officers at polling stations to intimidate voters "We called the RNC early and said hey... Let's put police officers, retired or off-duty police officers as our poll watchers in Detroit because go ahead, try to intimidate them. Please."

No. Nope. I'm sorry, your inflatable bananas and your Oasis songs don't make up for 18 years of cheating. It's all invalid, and you're embarrassing yourselves by pretending it's not.

Kylian Mbappé tells Brazilians not to get discouraged and vote for Lula. Proving that just because you are a rich and famous footballer, you don't HAVE to be an asshole.

BODEGA CATS!

OneCity Vancouver@onecityvan.bsky.social

Do you hate garbage? ABC reduced garbage collection so now there's more garbage on our streets, and more rats. OneCity will keep our streets clean with better contracts, more regular pickup, and bodega cats to help with the pests. www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8Ty...

My girlfriend just voted for the first time in over 20 years, because she hates Ken Sim and his cynical, manipulative anti-drug plebiscite so much. Congrats, ABC!

Integrity is key, here. For too long, we've abided an integrity-free, repercussion-free society. Football is a tiny part of that, but - well, if the powers that have been using it as PR value it - let football be the first to say no. No more.

Martin Calladine@uglygame.bsky.social

You cannot run a league successfully, fairly and with integrity if you have owners who believe themselves to be above the law. Especially if some of them actually are.

Capital punishment *must* be abolished. Not just for its own sake, but for the insidious moral harm it does to society. A society that accepts and condones state murder will inevitably extend the right of the state to murder more..and more..and more.

Since we all really FELT that ancient pooch who wouldn’t drop the ball, I figured I may as well tell you a bit about dogs in ancient Mesopotamia. They leave traces everywhere, from bricks to burials to proverbs. Here’s a 4,000-year-old paw print of a pooch on a brick from ancient Ur

Did I just get back from a viewing at Bonhams auction house in NYC of cat-themed art? Why yes- yes I did. Did I take pictures, including of these Chinese ceramic cats from the Qing Dynasty? Also yes! Will I make a thread of some of them? Indeed I will, which will include...

Important point for those saying (understandably!) oh now they'll just appeal for years...I believe they already have been appealing for 2+ years. And they have failed.

A legal suit on Sky Sports just said: "Man City retained an army of some of the best lawyers in the world, who allegedly obstructed this process from start to finish. Yet they have seemingly been found comprehensively guilty. They can kick & scream, but there's very little scope for manoeuvre now."

An example of one of the damaging knock-on effects of the fraudulent dealings, that likely will never be held to account: City's illegal spending didn't just acquire the best players, it rigged the entire market to put good players out of reach for most clubs.

Keithy@metalgiroud.bsky.social

It’s not Elliott Anderson’s fault that City paid £116m for him. He’s worth nowhere near that, but it skewed the market so much that every other transfer fee this summer was ludicrously high.

The offside rule in football: by virtue of where he is standing, refusing to play the team of a genocidal Israel, Gavin Bazunu has just played every other Irish squad member, the FAI, UEFA, and the Irish government, offside.

And if you're a City fan you should be even more furious because players with the grace & skill of De Bruyne or Silva could potentially win titles without a thumb on the scales. But we'll never know because Pep & the board decided they'd fix the game just in case. It cheapens everyone it touches.
