precisely! there's a kind of homogeneity that too many people -need- to see on screen. and it's imposed on a work that existed for millennia. it's just dishonest.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Things I’m good at: - reading a book in one day - β€œmissing” phone calls - overthinking things - staying up late researching an incredibly specific and random topic for no reason at all

Thanks to The Write-In team for publishing my fragmented narrative. It was my first time participating and I had a blast. #nffd2026

The Write-In: 'She-Bear' by Shon Mapp #nffd2026

dlvr.it'She-Bear' by Shon MappPeriod Panties A spectacle of pale pink stock soaks in our bathroom sink. Afterwards, I scrub them until my hands become prunes. Theft Nicole stops by unannounced one morning. We drink coffee in the kitchen while she prattles on about needing the balance of a man. She says that there’s too much estrogen in this space, not that it isn’t nice. I don’t respond, only study her unfurled locs and hunched posture. Almost recognizable after years of missed calls and unreturned messages, I watch her gel set claws click-clack against the phone screen. In an instant, she slinks to the floor. On her hands and knees, she grips the hardwood, transfixed by scent. Expelling a few breathy huffs towards the hallway, her wet nose twitches. She asks to use the bathroom and saunters off. Minutes pass before Nicole returns erect and composed. I should go. Tell your wife I said hi. At the front door, we limply hug our goodbyes, her purse trailing pale pink droplets down my driveway. Salmon Run Before I recognized myself as prey, you held the high ground, wading at the crest, slack jawed and watchful. For years, we returned to the same river, spent seasons co-existing while you gorged on the others. Each time that I weaved between your paws unscathed, it steeled my fortitude for the journey ahead. The October I was heavy with roe, you must’ve spotted me at the boil line. I remember the deafening rush of the rapids and my white muscles bursting with ache. In a single bound, I hurled my body above the sill and into the spray. You seized the opportunity and bared your soul to me for the first and only time.

I truly love and enjoy writing. The chaos, the surprises, discipline, dead-ends, ghost roads, focus, catharsis, that feeling of being changed by my own work. I wouldn’t outsource this to AI software for *anything*. But then again, I’m an actual writer who enjoys writing.

The Write-In: 'My story is a clichΓ© you say is best avoided' by Kathryn Reese #nffd2026

dlvr.it'My story is a clichΓ© you say is best avoided' by Kathryn ReesePride month writing workshop, your hair in braids, your singlet-shirt revealing scents of sandalwood soap and saltwater. Queerness is not a thing you discover in the mud, it’s in you, it’s always beenβ€” except that I’ve just spent three days in the scrub, cataloging frog calls and evading the thirst of terrestrial leeches.Β  When I was 12, I caught chicken pox. I remember shivering in my grandmother’s bed, pedestal fan whirring, starched sheets scratching at calamine-bathed skin. Being sent to bathe, water tinted yellow with pine tar, the stench lingering in my hair for months. Not being allowed out, except to go to the park, as long as I promise I won’t go near anyone.Β  But there was something in the stopped-up creek, the wonga-vine’s embrace, or the way the strangler fig poured herself into another tree’s torsoβ€” I promise I won’t go near anyone because I was a church-girl then, believing that love is proportionate to purity, and purity a thing so easily undone.Β  I promise I won’tβ€” This place won’t forget what she is told, even as she teaches me to kiss honey from fallen flowers. She would have loved me but holiday love and quarantine end. At the bidding of god, my parents say, we relocate to some red-dust mining town. Make the best of it. I stick with the first boy to pick me. Love is proportionate to purity after all. I play it safe. Lucky things worked out but there you are in sandalwood and a singlet-shirt saying I’ve always been whole and holy and I tell you noβ€” I’m three-days deep in the scrub by my grandmother’s house, leech-scarred, mud-stained and bearing the sap of wonga vine in my hair. And if you kiss me you will taste another girl’s honey in my hair.Β

When I told a friend the usual writer rejection/acceptance rate they were shocked and wondered how anyone could do it. Trying to smooth out perspective so acceptances are great but not signifiers of value and rejections are too bad but not signifiers of lack of value is practice. Congrats on a yes

@mooninabucket.bsky.social is one of my first and favorite writers that I discovered online during the pandemic. If you haven't read her work, today is the perfect day to do so.
