The Michigan Road Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library won an AccessAbility Award from Helen Keller services (right up there with Canon and OXO) for showing "what accessible employment looks like in practice." Details in their press release. 📚 www.indypl.org/news-and-ann...

Today is Vermont Libraries Day, the first annual, signed into law earlier this year. There are 183-ish public libraries in Vermont, the most per capita of any US state. Hannah Miller has been to all of them. They are all locally funded. This is the logo. At least we are not using AI. 😂 📚

Over the last year, Vermont libraries... - answered 240,638 reference questions - circulated almost 3 million physical items and 927,317 digital ones - had 200,173 people attend kids' programs All of this in a state with 644,000 people!

I "celebrated" by going to the Knit Night which happens on Monday nights at my library. It was a good time, hanging out with a friendly bunch of experienced knitters. I learned from YouTube, this was my first time knitting in public. Plus, someone had to take all the donut holes home! (it was me) 🧶

I worked at Github for eleven days as a contractor doing spam fighting. I don't know if I was fired b/c they saw I'd signed a lot of my (unreasonable amount of) paperwork "Abolish ICE" or because I, at the advice of my boss, used a computer which was not my own for a few hours. Probably the former.

Via my state's Dept of Libraries newsletter, I learned that we deliver books to six correctional institutions in the state as well as to Mississippi where Vermonters are incarcerated. Made sure the DOL knew about the Abolitionist Library Association. Do you? 📚 modest-colden-86b261.netlify.app

I grew up rural in a house my folks were fixing up so it was always under construction. It wasn't until I went to school and had to wear shoes all the time and meet other people's standards of cleanliness/manners that I realized our "free range" life was... out of the ordinary.

"...under the leadership of the Big Five and their equally hegemonic national retail partners, the flagship product favored by elite-facing bookstores in wealthy enclaves got cheaper, and the format with the proven mass potential got many times more expensive." 📚 jacobin.com/2026/10/book...

jacobin.comPublishers Killed the Paperback, Then Blamed ReadersIn 1939, the 25-cent paperback made America a nation of readers, delivering thrillers, classics and Pulitzer-winning books. So why did the Big Five publishers just kill the mass market paperback?

I love that everyone’s excited about #bannedbooksweek, but please remember that there’s so much more to it than just buying or reading a banned book. Its also about people- librarians, educators, and readers- Kelly’s body of work is a starting point to understand this more.

A massive thread of resources, history, information, and material to help you not only fight and understand book censorship but protect the incredible democratic institutions of public libraries and public education. This is updated regularly!

I posted this on the eve of a library budget vote. It's a complex story but the short version is that the library trustees and Selectboard could not agree on a budget so the SB kept putting *their* (lower) budget in front of voters. Voters got to vote on trustee (higher) budget today and it PASSED.

This means I get a not-insubstantial raise for my three hours per week but also the Selectboard gets a "Stop trying to fuck with the library budget" message loud and clear. Our library director who was making a shockingly low salary got a huge raise which she deserved. Wish she'd gotten it sooner.

@jtkantor.bsky.social I have a local friend from my town here in Vermont who is turning 98 soon and is going to the Red Sox game on Friday with a group of friends. I don't think Goodnight Irene is appropriate but is there either a birthday song (Stevie?) or another song you'd suggest or could play?

"Hiring a “litigation consultant” to conduct a market study certainly suggests... that rather than collaborate with libraries ... the publishers’ primary trade organization instead appears to be gearing up for a court battle" Read this, and demand better. Excellent work, Guy.

“There's nothing stopping libraries from not accepting [the Big Five’s] terms right now." The Big 5 have shown their cards. I think it's time to call their bluff. www.wordsandmoney.com/in-the-libra...

I got paid $250/month plus free rent to be the live-in caretaker of an Odd Fellows Hall in Seattle (no, not that one) in the 90s. I got to manage hall rentals for groups like the Loyal Order of the Golden North, Girth and Mirth, and the Modern Woodmen of America.

Today is my birthday; I am 58. Some privacy goes out the window when Wikipedia tells everyone how old you are. I did this last year and enjoyed it: suggest a book for me, or just send me a fun GIF? If you want to know if I've already read a book, list back to '97 is here jessamyn.info/booklist

An AI scambot of some kind, confusing me with an author who died in 1984, discussing her book which was published in 1953. Literally any living librarian would not make this mistake 📚 "I want to start by saying, Cress Delahanty is one of those rare books that arrives at exactly the right moment..."

I am chilling at a public library in MA. The library's lore is that a rich guy from Harvard left a bequest and some books for a library. The truth is, he died without a will and his sister inherited automatically and said "You know, this town could really use a library." I've fixed Wikipedia. 📚

Nirvana was playing in my college's dining commons in 1990 and it was $3 and I'd never heard of them and I thought their drunken smiley face logo looked goofy so I skipped it.

How about this? Best concerts that you ALMOST got to see but DIDN’T. Include reasons if you like: Rolling Stones (play rehearsal) Johnny Cash (I dallied) R.E.M. (play performance) Nirvana (canceled, college declined to pay requested $500 appearance fee)

A cool project that was possible thanks to the Flickr Commons presence of the British Library. 🥰

Every illustration in the British Library's 19th-century book images dataset now has an instance mask: 1.02M clean cutouts of public-domain engravings, no image generation involved! One small segmentation model, $3.24 of compute. Model, masks and a search Space with cutout view all open.

My dad brought a CD player back from a trip to Japan and along with it brought Wish You Were Here (Japanese release, ~1982) which we played on repeat frequently marveling at how crisp it was. The first CD I ever owned was the Misfits, maybe didn't require high fidelity, but sure was loud.

44 years ago today, the first CD was produced. What is the first CD you owned?
