Thinking a lot about climate adaptation: ManufacturedEcosystems.com for more details about our NFRF
The pathway to a #PhDLife might include a Master's degree.
But, it might not.
Whichever you follow, there are costs and benefits.
And your context really matters.

And weโre off!
The Ontario Universities Council on Quality Assurance (OUCQA) symposium in Toronto has us thinking & talking about Learning Outcomes
Are they still a thing?
Our session: Caught in the double binds of assessment, will make the case for bringing JOY to our transformation of #HigherEd
This is some serious bullshit!
I read several of these banned books to my 1st graders as an introduction to a lesson.
Let the teachers, who have received degrees in education, do their job.

Anyway HAPPY FRIDAY I wrote the book I wanted to write! Maybe it will be the book you would like to read! :D
Contains: demons, sentient streetlights, a seven foot-tall bare-knuckle lady boxer (former), the full-course dinner at The Wretched Dragon, a museum exhibit full of tiny dragons, and spies!
Doing some swotting on embryonic development for a podcast I'm hosting and came across @profaliceroberts.bsky.social's hand drawn videos.
Incredibly clear explanations, would recommend.
(though I am very envious of her drawing skills!)

Community at this scale doesnโt just happen: it needs resourcing
Next year, I lose access to the tools I use to do this, unless I pay for them myself
So these small acts of community building may be some of my last
I present: collaborative drawing.
The Memorial Cloth is a 60-metre commemoration the honours the names of thousands of children that died as a result of residential schools in Canada.
It is displayed each year as part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event on Parliament Hill.
Itโs med school reference letter season ๐
Observation: #HigherEd students struggle to find referees because classes are too large to build meaningful relationships with their instructors
Hypothesis: Over-enrolling students without hiring faculty reduces access to mentorship and opportunity
Day 27 of #SciArtSeptember is quill so I made a little porcupine #linocut on delicate 8โ by 8โ Japanese paper. This is one of a variable edition. This is a North American or Canadian porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum).

Preparing students to work on a project on the #DairyBush this fall (a natural woodlot on the #Guelph campus) and want introduce them (& you) to this sugar maple that is estimated to have germinated in 1785.
This 241 year old ๐ (older than ๐จ๐ฆ , than lithography, than โฆ) is part of your campus.
In honour of #BatmanDay hereโs a poster I made for a #LaurierBiology seminar back in 2016! (And the #BrightKnight colourized version by my son)! #SciArt
#HigherEd first class report:
1) Technologically disastrous due to expanded diversity of proprietary hard and software
2) My students are lovely humans with great energy

New #HigherEd โguidelinesโ just dropped in my inbox for this semester
Classes start in two days. My course has 400 students.

Dear #HigherEd,
Anyone else working today on tasks that are actually in your job description, because most of the time during the workweek, you do so many things that aren't actually your job?

Dear #HigherEd instructors,
Opening your course website before classes start is a great way to help students prepare
If you use CourseLink, overriding the default access date is as simple as a quick email
I opened mine on Sept 3, and so far, 247 out of 400 students in my course have logged in

The #ManufacturedEcosystems team agrees with @theguardian.com that the Leaf Sheep is pretty darn amazing.
Check out Yulia Shtern's stunning work using upcycled materials and no extra pigment, so we can appreciate just how magical this tiny soul really is.

We analysed 3.78 million DNA barcodes from 152,891 Costa Rican insect species.
Our results reveal limited community overlap across ecosystems, suggesting unique species assemblages in each life zone.
