So my advice to my biology colleagues and students is to “celebrate the anarchy”. Think of it as job security-ish.

Amen to this. My way of phrasing this is to remind students that “biology is a science of exceptions.” For any new principle one may discover, there’s probably some life form out there that breaks your rule and does things differently. Good luck training an AI model on exceptions.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Update: press 🙂 for "duck tape" and ☹️ for "duct tape"

Catherine Clarke@cathamclarke.bsky.social

I could spend the rest of my life analysing this feedback sign in the local Home Bargains. Did 'not happy' break from overuse? Was it taped over to ensure 100% positive feedback? Is the green 'b' in 'feedback' some kind of subliminal nudge? Is the duck tape indent because people still keep pressing?

I'm late to the scene (by months) but I'll still ping this to the top of your feed: Awesome paper by @rhohnen.bsky.social (now a @libererofellows.bsky.social) and colleagues, where we focus on managing co-listed threats of species at risk. Different approach, same game. #WILDlab

Dr Rosemary Hohnen@rhohnen.bsky.social

New paper out ✨️🦌 'Does management of woodland caribou threats provide protection for Canada's other species at risk'. We found some species at risk might benefit from effective caribou threat management, but there were limits. Read more here: www.facetsjournal.com/doi/10.1139/...

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

Incredibly sad news. This is going to sound snarky but I swear it isn’t: we’ll always have “nuclear wessels”. Thanks, Walter. 🖖🏻

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Scandal in Nottingham as Ye Olde Trip doesn't even make it into the top ten oldest pubs in England. Even worse is that it's beaten by a pub in Southwell. The shame.

On a related note, King Street in Kitchener should be closed to cars all the time, not just when there are street festivals; it makes no sense as a thoroughfare for anything but bikes and pedestrians.

So, in a new NYT essay about May 13, 1986 (the day she was born), Lena Dunham suggests that, back then, nobody in Canada or the US knew or cared much about acid rain. I hate to get in the way of a good generational shaming, but she’s just…er, totally wrong?

Looking at Canadian university financials and man, Western had a good year last year. For 2025-26, it posted a surplus of $268M or +15% (natl avg = +4%). It's mostly due to some amazing investment results (hire their advisers if you can!) - their operating budget isn't qute so hot. Still.

Before people in Canada say US academics should just come to Canada, they should probably reflect on the fact that Canada has plenty of unemployed PhDs, and ask themselves why that is. Americans should do the same. This is the sum total of “history” jobs in Canada currently listed on the CAUT site:

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?
