Live from NPR News in California, this is Shreyas Sudhakar. I was on air in the Bay Area last week, and will be on 99.1 KLBP in SoCal tomorrow AM chatting about the CA Heat Pump Group Buy. Tune in and give it a listen! PS: if you don't own a radio, it's here too: climatebreak.org/buying-heat-...

climatebreak.orgBuying heat pumps with neighbors, with Shreyas Sudhakar - Climate BreakGroup-buys of heat pumps can encourage more homeowners to make the switch from traditional gas furnaces, which are large contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, by offsetting the high upfront cost.…

But you’re also paying for the health safety inspection, the food safety trainings, the proper refrigeration of the ingredients, and a whole load of other things. Plus, you know that restaurant will be there tomorrow so you can keep getting tacos for years to come.

Working with an unlicensed contractor is a lot like buying street food. It’s cheaper than the nice restaurant, sometimes it’s really good, but sometimes it tastes better going in than coming out.

Thank you to Matthew at Laminar Collective for showing me around their test lab! Cool stuff brewing from our friends on the other coast to help us get more heat pumps in more homes!

Rebate programs come and go & a big one in the LA area just came back. In <1 week more than half the funds have already been claimed! So we sent out a frantic email monday night helping all of our @vayu.pro LA customers jump on it. If you want a heat pump in LA, this might be your moment!

Will I see you at the Heat Pump Summit? I'm excited to join some really smart people (Eric at Amply, Piers at SeeAir) in a panel about tech-enabled heat pump business models. Some secret sauce might come out, so you'll have to join us in person to get the scoop! PS: use code SS26 to save on tix!

We talk a lot about speed and scale when it comes to solar, batteries, and heat pumps. And it's warranted! We need to decarbonize fast, and there's a lot of work to do. There's >1.5 million gas furnaces in the SF Bay Area alone that we need to replace with heat pumps. (1/many) 🧵

Once we've really nailed that (I think we're getting super close), we'll pour gas on the fire. But only then, and if our outcomes or quality ever stop dropping we'll take a beat before we keep going. (6/almost done)

Because speed and scale alone is where you start hearing people say that "solar salesmen are sleazeballs" and "I paid $30k for solar and half of the micro inverters fried 2 months in and they won't return my calls" (7/7)

The ugly truth is that we can't simply focus on the number of systems installed. Solar 1.0 is a great example of this. They focused on speed and scale over customer outcomes, and yelp reviews tell the story better than I could. (4/many)

I've actually installed fewer heat pumps in the last two years than I did my first two years. And it's a good thing! We've been diving deep into what makes a quality system and a quality customer outcome. Each of our installs is better than the last one, and we're learning so much. (5/a bunch)

The other day one of my teammates was on a sales call and got asked how many heat pumps I've installed. They were honest and said <100. The customer balked - that's not a lot at all. (2/many)

And it's true! At the rate I've been averaging, it'll take me 60,000 years to replace every single gas furnace in SF. And probably a few hundred million more to replace all of them in California. (3/many)

This is a huge win!! Kudos to everyone that has been pushing this bill forward, it has been a long time in the making

BREAKING: The #HeatPumpAccessAct just passed in CA 🎉 It now heads to @governor.ca.gov's desk, bringing CA closer to faster, more affordable #heatpump installs for homeowners & contractors. Thank you @scottwiener.bsky.social! bit.ly/4hUESKm #EnergySky #BuildingDecarb

That’s one of the reasons we think the group buy mechanism really works for heat pumps! When it’s on your mind, you can get the decision off your mind quickly and make the right choice rather than the desperate one.

@vayu.pro turned 2 years old today! And what a ride it has been. Some highlights... 🧵 - We've installed dozens of heat pumps across California - We're live in 2 markets (the whole SF Bay Area and LA), and gearing up for our first pilots in a third (western Sacramento) (1/6)

The stats are pretty brutal. 80% of new HVAC businesses fail in the first year. We made it over the first hurdle! It's been so rewarding to see this blossom from a napkin sketch to where we are today. (5/6)

We still have a long way to go, but we're making our little dent in getting 6 million heat pumps installed in California, the right way. And having so much fun along the way! (6/6)

Had a great time chatting with ACHRnews about our group buy model! We talked about how we vet our licensed contractor partners, why we focus on ducted replacements, and how planned heat pump upgrades save homeowners money vs. emergency swap-ins. www.achrnews.com/articles/166...

achrnews.comA New Way to Buy and Sell Heat PumpsA new group buying model is helping HVAC contractors generate heat pump leads more efficiently, while offering homeowners lower prices and a simpler buying experience.

It's been exactly 3 days since WIRED called our group buy "a Costco for heat pumps" and our inboxes have not recovered. If you're looking to upgrade to a heat pump, check out heatpumpgroupbuy.com. We can't promise a $1.50 hot dog, but we can promise a pretty darn good deal on a heat pump.

You guys! Check out this awesome story by @chrisbaraniuk.com on how @shreyassudhakar.com's company Vayu, as well as community groups, are helping households get together and buy heat pumps in bulk at 15-30% discounts. A great way to add air conditioning while reducing fossil gas use for heating!

This weekend, we celebrate classic American pastimes: fireworks, grilling, getting a heat pump quote, getting another heat pump quote, realizing the AC died, and panic-installing an outdated low-efficiency furnace because everyone is melting.
