Ossoff: "Tech titans dig bunkers while warning us the AI they're creating risks human extinction. Meanwhile, our Congress debates youth sports and the president builds a ballroom ... I refuse to leave my girls a world as dark and dangerous and cruel as this one threatens to become"

oh my god if the Nathan Fielder documentary about Elizabeth Holmes even slightly interests you, go see it

Aurora Borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within your kitchen?

Name a quote from The Simpsons.

Saw this on my LI feed. IMO a good example of taking potentially interesting data but drawing shaky conclusions from it...

6) The data is from 2016/2017, well before COVID and barely into Trump's first term. Which is obviously okay for a study, but extrapolating it out to explain general behavior *today* feels... ambitious.

Anyway, I think the paper was pretty interesting! And did a good job citing limitations, next steps, etc: psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/202... It even says: "However, our research is limited in its external validity due to its reliance on a student sample from a single university."

4) The correlations seems relatively small to me (averaging at around 0.09 if I'm reading it right).

5) The study is around one university in Texas (which the paper does a good job citing as a limitation!) It doesn't really surprise me that conservative students there spend more time at frats and religious places while liberals might spend more time at home.

2) Nothing in the paper mentions doomscrolling. Liberals in the study just mentioned using the internet and social media more.

3) "Helps explain why conservatives are happier" is a really big claim not found anywhere in the cited paper. Happiness data, as I understand it, is very tricky since it involves self-reporting across different demographics and cultures.

Having a lot of fun revisiting old posts and giving the ones that never had their own hero some love.

maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me

The problem isn’t that they’re moving past it—it’s that they’re trying to rehabilitate it. Would be better for everyone if people who don’t want to engage with the facts just talked about the play on the field and left it at that.

Just asked Victor Wembanyama if he’d ever consider promoting a sports betting company. “Absolutely not. I will never do that. Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it. .. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

yeah why would you be expected to do your job

Rick Scott on AI: "Congress can't regulate this. We can't get election security passed or pass a budget, so we're not gonna be the ones to do it. It's gonna have to be done through the administration with talking to these AI companies."

me 4 hours into a tech interview

I’m sorry, but if you bring an iced coffee - or any damn beverage at all - to a job interview, you’re disqualified. It’s not hard, people.

recently watched The Leftovers for the first time and it shook me Carrie Coon's, Christopher Eccleston's, Justin Theroux's, and Ann Dowd's performances, Max Richter's score, its refusal to explain anything, and that ending!! very close to a perfect TV show

Ten perfect television shows (minus Landry killing a dude, we don’t talk about that)

the Blake Mills + Pino Palladino records occupy a ton of real estate in my head

I feel like we all need a universal coping mechanism. So let’s share your favourite bass guitarist or bassist.

I would just honestly so much rather look at the crudest, most rudimentary finger-painting than any art a prompt would ever spit out

> make hating DEI and loving meritocracy the core part of your political identity > complain incessantly about second generation immigrants thriving in academic and other meritocratic systems > endlessly defend podcasters and fox news anchors holding the most important levers of societal power

if I was worried about a 10-25% chance of my company causing human extinction, I personally wouldn't go to the salesforce conference later that week, but I might just be built different

gonna stop paying rent to remove my trade deficit with my landlord

Trump: "If we lose $50 billion a year with a country, and we say 'we're not going to trade with you anymore,' we don't lose $50 billion a year. It's very simple. Right?"

is there a word for hating an aesthetic you'd probably have liked 5 years ago, entirely because it's now the visual signature of AI slop? (thinking of Claude-generated UX with the parchment canvas, serif fonts, and muted earthy colors)

getting a mix of data/viz content and political content is hilarious because half of it is like "okay we have to be really careful about how humans perceive the lengths of arcs in donut charts" and the other half is "the government decides data isn't real anymore"
