Troubleshooting an issue at work. Look at the log file. See the event and see something weird going on. Look into the code to see what's happening. See that nobody thought that an important piece of information that could've pointed to a root cause in minutes should not be logged by default. 🤷‍♀️

Saying we should all go back to physical media I think misses the point. I actually *like* buying games and movies digitally for a bunch of reasons. What we need is better consumer protections so the things we do buy digitally are actually owned and companies cant delete/revoke access!

a great dissection of why a lot of fandom drama doesn't only boil down to "these people are thinking too much about [insert series here] and need to touch grass." there's another layer to the way folks get obsessed (for parasocial/self-important rewriting/clout reasons, etc) that gets glossed over

I picked up self-teaching how to play the guitar and I’m starting to believe it’s improving my skill at Gitadora (Konami’s Guitar Hero) whenever I play it at Round One 😂

Are we at a point in video game history that the lack of a real time day-night cycle in games must be some sort of lore thing?

I don’t know if it’s an actual term but I like that what I call “only doing the dailies in gacha games” as playing the game in “maintenance mode” gained a little traction elsewhere

I GOT THE DOMAIN! I FINALLY GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!1 🥳🎉 Paint.NET is now at paint.net! Well, it will be just as soon as I push all the buttons to migrate content and set up redirects from getpaint.net etc. For now it's just a "hey go here" redirect page.

I don't know how much of a hot take this is but I wanted to get this thought out. Certain game companies investing in AI to handle side aspects of their game doesn't just tell me they don't want to hire creatives. They also think that quantity >>>> quality.

I've already dropped some games because I've grown tired of how inflated the content has become. And that's just by (presumably) human authors. I'm sure a lot of it is good, but when it's padded to high hell, I can't bother sifting through it.

A major problem I’m having with the live service (gacha) games I play is they want to tell a great story. The problem is they don’t respect my time telling it. I get discouraged if I have to sit through 30+ minute cutscenes that I have to commit to.

The more annoying thing is some of these games are thinly veiled visual novels, which as far as I know, all of them allow you to save and resume whenever

this weekend i collaged a poem of sorts based on some of the conversations i overheard around fanfest. each line was said by a different person at a different time. so... let's meet again!

impossible to explain the appeal of The Primals if you don't play XIV a bunch of 50-something uncs get up on stage and play video game music and for that small period of time, it's the coolest thing in the world.

Seeing a lot of hate for Koji on the timeline right now. For anyone who didn't watch the panel: He was very open that he was forced into including AI by the SE president. Your hate should be directed at the suits, and not Koji himself.

Last night while I was leaving a concern, one of the stage lights was hitting the wall near the exit and it had that same effect as ray tracing "shimmering" or whatever it's called. More "proof" we're just in a simulation 🤪

I remember Medal of Honor: Frontline had this bonus video where two of the devs are doing a gag radio talk show about programmer things. Being a developer, that skit is now 100x more hilarious.

As a kid I always saw NASA's ground control station with those big, boxy consoles. So that's the image I think of about them. It's weird seeing them today with basically a modern office desk setup.

YouTuber pet peeve: When the person puts in literally anything but a description of the video in the Description section.

> Playing Resident Evil Requiem > Walk into a room, see the auto save indicator > "Hm... I'm sure nothing's going to happen here 🤪" > Something happens in the room

Pet peeve of the day: Why do manufacturers recess the receptacle for things (USB, power, whatever) thereby making it hard to find a replacement cable because it don't fit. It's like they begrudgingly accepted the standard by making it as "proprietary" as possible.

I want to sit down with a level artist/designer who worked on a pretty extensive 3D game just to pick at their brain on the technical parts. There's assumptions I can make about why things are the way they are, but it'd be nice to actually know.

Doing something at work using one of our web page tools and the first attempt didn't work. So I did it again to see if it'll throw an error. It did! "[object object]" SIIIIIIIGH

Ran into another comment section about how modern games use TAA to blur the snot out of everything and it looks fugly. I don't know, I find the shimmering more annoying.

That isn't to say TAA is amazing and I'm sure there'll be someone who's anti-TAA going "this is just one scene!" but it doesn't really matter. Either I get shimmering because it's a fundamental temporal aliasing problem or I get blurring because those pixels got blinded together to avoid it.

Also correction, this isn't a temporal aliasing effect. Brain must've made that association because TAA is over time. Anyway, it's still a fundamental problem because there's only so many pixels you can use to render a high-frequency pattern.

So for now, I'd rather take TAA as long as it doesn't have annoying amounts of ghosting because shimmering is more distracting to me. Which for a lot of the games I play I'd have to stop thinking about playing the game to hunt it down.

Sometimes I let some of the apps that come with a computer do their thing, just to give it a shot. Maybe it's not as bad as... Why is this one constantly asking me to approve elevated privileges Okay I changed my mind, they're being nuked into deep space.

The next time a CEO of a company that makes a prominent game engine says it's the developer's fault for not making performant games, maybe they should lead by example and make a AAA game that looks like something top tier from 5 years ago but can run on a potato at 60 FPS.

Enough people said they wanted to see the final slide deck, so I took the time to put it on my non-teacher github so I could share it. I didn't end up getting in trouble. I ended up being encouraged by a colleague to share it with my dept chair, and he liked it authorblues.github.io/lecture-slid...

I'm *definitely* going to get in trouble with my department/university for my "AI Policy" slide deck I put together. I doubled its length tonight adding papers, articles, and other references enumerating reasons why I won't allow for generative AI and why students shouldn't be using it.
