New paper from former @holmeslab-bhi.bsky.social post-doc @sidchop.bsky.social. In first-episode psychosis, antipsychotic-naive patients on placebo showed widespread cortical thinning over 12mo. However, patients on antipsychotics did not. Thinning appears to be illness- not drug-driven.

🧠 Excited to share the results of our placebo-controlled RCT in psychosis: cortical thinning in the first year of illness is very likely not because of antipsychotic medication, but due to the illness itself. www.biologicalpsychiatryjournal.com/article/S000... Thanks to @alexfornito.bsky.social &

Our new paper in @natureportfolio.nature.com. Psychedelics don’t simply disorder the brain. We found hidden, context-sensitive organisation beneath the apparent chaos -- strongest in people reporting more positive, profound experiences and a reduced sense of separation from the world. 🧵👇

Synaptic loss in schizophrenia isn't random. New PET imaging work from our group, led by @sidchop.bsky.social, shows it's left-lateralized, follows neurochemical gradients, and may propagate outward from inferior frontal cortex through axonal networks, independent of MRI grey matter changes

To ask where in the brain this loss might begin, we applied a network diffusion model over the structural connectome, and found left inferior frontal / anterior insula as a potential source, with deficits spreading along white-matter connections to molecularly similar regions 3/4
