there's a particular style of grievanceposting where absolutely no interaction that isn't utterly submissive agreement is acceptable; even when i agree in principle with the grievance, it's immensely offputting because i know participation is neither expected nor welcome.

One thing I’ve long argued is that privacy advocates talk about the harm of targeted ads but can’t actually prove any harm outside of saying it gives them the ick. Now a court of law has said the same to the FTC. 😬 https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/05/business/ftc-kochava-location-data.html

many people don't want this though. they want another alternative to elon, because having an authority figure means they can short-circuit grappling with the complexity of reality into "why didn't the ceo fix this already"

Jay 🦋@jay.bsky.team

i don’t want to just be the nicer alternative to elon — i want this to be a paradigm shift where i was influential in kicking it off, but overall it is about the town square of public social becoming more self-organizing and open to innovation

I nominate "bleets"

Jay 🦋@jay.bsky.team

Guys, please don't let "skeets" stick The experiment in decentralized naming decisions has resulted in the worst possible term How about skoots? Can we bring back skoots? Bluesky OGs, help me out here, remember skoots?

Lina Khan’s obsession with big tech continues to be an embarrassing blind spot. Weird to write an editorial framing AI regulation as a big tech problem when what happened is a scrappy startup, OpenAI, disrupted the industry while Google self regulated itself into being a has been.

Let's do a sheesh chain. That's a single reply chain where each reply has a sheesh with exactly one more e than the sheesh above it, all the way to the fabled 300-character sheesh. The timeline couldn't do it, can the skyline? I'll start: sheesh

yes. there’s other ways to deal with even the worst actors. ignore, shun, humorously dismiss, refute. but “bullying” escalates cycles of confrontation that bring out the worst in people. i think bad actors sometimes thrive off the negativity too.

you will all be able to run your own servers soon, and set your own moderation policies at the server as well as the community level. but i need it to be calm enough for long enough that we can build out the rest of the system to give people more direct controls.

i do and i have but i’m sure there will be cases where it looks like they’re engaging in good faith and i won’t know what to do, and everyone will start yelling at me. the moderation policies here are not going to be “ban whoever the loudest group hates”

I usually avoid touching discourse with a ten foot pole, but since people seem so eager to set norms on here I'll just say that it makes everything worse when you act viciously towards people you don't like, including for you, yes you.

To first order, maybe: yay! you bullied the Bad Person off the platform! To nth order: congrats. You've just established an environment where the most vicious and vociferous people win the day. Keep patting yourself on the back up to the moment the social dynamics come crashing down on *you*

can i just step in here to ask, in a moment of relative chill before whatever next week brings, that we - not make death threats - block more, bully less

You are up to date.
