I'm not here to kinkshame monogamy but i do think the cultural expectation that any infidelity (with a broad and varying definition) is a relationship capital crime sets people up for a lot of unnecessary misery

ideas are basically free, gang. execution is the real ballgame.

the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

anyway, for some of this we have a kind of asbestos-shaped problem: the stuff we had does a really important thing (treats ADHD/makes you not die in a fire) but the negative side effects (cancer/also cancer) are really really bad, so it's a race to get alternatives up and running and market-viable

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

it sounds kind of ridiculous but i think you can make a not entirely facetious case that 1) the industrial revolution and therefore ~modernity is downstream of mass-market stimulants (tea, then tobacco and coffee) and 2) a key impact of stimulants is their effect on specifically certain ND types

The U.S. and Uzbekistan announced 54 agreements and initiatives worth approximately $12 billion during Rubio’s visit to Samarkand. The package covers critical minerals, energy, transport, finance and technology, including partnerships with major U.S. firms.

we're in a rewatch of Grounded For Life (Donal Logue, Megyn Price) and his recurring role as the grandfather is always a mark of a good time. Stephen Root is the other grandpa, the cast is weirdly stacked for what it is

completely correct on both counts, do not miss. also: anime protagonists that aren't in high school for once, shockingly listenable voice acting, and uniforms on women that look... uniform and not cringey.

Legitimately, Valkyria Chronicles - the anime-alternate-history-WWII-with-magical-girls is 1) a great game, go play it but 2) better about addressing the real nature of the Nazi regime than 95+% of 'gritty' modern realistic WWII games. Which is nuts, the bar is just...so low.

i see there is Astarion discourse again and still completely amazed anyone didn't immediately stake his creeper ass when he comes up on you in the night, that is 3 strikes all at once sorry

generally the dude-datables are a sorry lot, like astarion and gale are right out and Wyll/Halsin being aggresively OK/mid, compare Karlach/Shadowheart hell even Minthara as more interesting

if you're interested in the how/why of art engaging with bad art can teach you a *lot* about technique and the difference between, as Twain put it, the lightning and the lightning-bug

rj@rj.dcellgames.com

experiencing bad art is extremely valuable if you engage with it honestly and there's always beauty and grace in it. and who doesn't love a trip to da movies. and also sometimes a movie just surprises you. but it's the lack of time that's the killer

when i say "CS is a humanity" dwarf fortress is basically what i'm talking about. it's a perfectly fine game but it's also a rare example of Programmer Art (complimentary)

The happiest man in gaming hates generative AI. Dwarf Fortress creator Tarn Adams discusses bloated AI code, vampire computers, and surviving on Steam. https://bit.ly/4en1cJF

"This does something useful and we have some guesses but nothing solid about how it works" is pretty much table stakes in pharma. Shit, the physiological basis of anaesthesia is still, let us say, imperfectly understood, but we do surgery daily.

I was at a conference last week where a well known 1st Amendment professor claimed it was silly to think that free speech was under attack in the US because people at that conference were criticizing the administration, so clearly everyone felt free to speak.

I've named cars and devices and given them pronouns and stuff; in boating culture, basically every boat is she/her; people only got weird when the object started talking back convincingly.

i think anyone on the "don't anthropomorphize AI" team is fighting a losing battle. people anthropomorphize everything. just kinda the way language works. it's all metaphor.
