I recommend this course, it took me from zero to building an internal library of web components. Web Components are one of those web concepts I was failing to quite grasp, and I feel like people are still discovering what to use them for. As a next step I'm looking at exploring elenajs.com/start/

Interested in setting aside the magical prompter and learning some web standards skills the old fashioned way? You can sign up for my online Web Components course for free until Oct 31 with the code markitzero. If you find it useful, please consider letting folks know! 🎃

Where do people think AI gets the ideas of how to do better CSS? A combination of devs knowing that something exists + the training data. The former matters a lot with ever-emerging new standards. Riding the AI wave too hard eventually results in lack of purpose and not knowing what to prompt for.

I wish I'd realized when recording this that it would come out on the 10-year anniversary of my channel, but even if I didn't mention it, I guess it's still pretty fitting 😅 (plus it was posted to my second channel anyway, lol)

Better CSS is not about feeling warm and fuzzy inside, it’s about producing UX that’s actually good. Especially on phones, where the majority of web traffic comes from. AI doesn’t know how much UX can suck. But people do.

I went to buy bibs for a baby shower. "Is it a boy or a girl?" "It's a fetus, give it some time to explore its gender identity." I managed to find some neutral ones.

My colleague kept telling me that our boss is being really hard on her, and I kept dismissing it because he was being nice to me. That's male privilege dumbass logic in action. On X I remember a woman asking "women, how are you dealing with men in tech?", and a reply "I quit, that's how" 😭

Jo Franchetti @thisisjofrank.bsky.social

I gave a talk at EMF titled "Men in Tech #YesAllMen", in which I told my experience of being a woman in tech. I was afraid to publish it in case it affected my current or future employment. With all the current news I would like to add my 2¢. So here is the recording: youtu.be/WXL6K1lhvt0?...

In her talk I heard a lot of "should"s coming from what men were telling her, which proves her point — if she constantly "should" be feeling something, but isn't, that's the sound of gender roles.

Yet another great idea! I appreciate knowing what metadata is now obsolete. Modern insight tools focus on jacking up scores, but these kind of insights matter too because they help retain meaning an appreciation for our code. Polypane’s meta panel is a lovely place full of insight ✨

Every long-lived website ends up with cobwebs. 🕸️ Things that used to do something, but no longer do. Like httpequiv for IE8-10, your fb:pages id or the Windows 8 tile tags. None of them do anything anymore. But which ones can you safely get rid of? The next version of Polypane will tell you!

With `alpha()` we now have three ways to lower the opacity of a color in CSS. The nice thing with alpha (besides being super easy and probably easier to read) is that it keeps the colour space the same. I took a look at it here if you want more info on it: youtu.be/Pfj9OmvqU0Q

Setting aside the slop — comparing speed of a new formatter to Prettier after Biome and oxfmt have entered the arena is quite a cheap shot. And putting that number front and center, a number that nobody recognizes, is decision so poor that it proves that no thought went into this at all.

patak@patak.cat

with a slop ad for it

It’s pretty arrogant of people to call rain, storms, blizzards etc. “bad weather”. In Croatian we have an even worse phrase, “nevrijeme”, which literally translates to “non-weather”. All that just because it doesn’t suit us humans. But snow, lightning, even earthquakes etc. are AMAZING.

How are local worktrees not a hassle for everyone?? It's not enough to just git-ignore them: - if you're using Prettier, you're likely not using --ignore-path=.gitignore - same for linters - tsconfig must also exclude - for Vitest you have to exclude it for each project — fun, right?

So that's: - .gitignore - .prettierignore (or other formatter, btw oxfmt respects .gitignore) - .biome.json (or other linter, btw oxlint respects .gitignore) - .tsconfig.json - vite(st).config.ts - more tools? Why not have tools store worktrees elsewhere instead of this whac-a-mole?

Perspective is everything This 1986 ad screened by The Guardian changed how we view things with its shocking visual of a 'skinhead' seemingly taking a man's briefcase. But it's only when perspective changes, that you see the full picture. Original post

A quick look back… Claude Code: want me to implement these changes? Me: if you get anywhere NEAR writing on my disk you’re dead. I changed my tune since then, but was anyone else super uncomfortable with agents editing their code? I was quite a late adopter.

I pretend to not have seizures. I shake, my vision splits, my neurons have their rave party, but I don’t want anyone to know. And if I get incapacitated, I APOLOGIZE to the person who can no longer speak to me! “I’m sorry that I’m going through hell right now.” Every goddamn time.

When I put it like that, I guess acting this way makes sense. Before s standup show I explained that if I get a seizure someone should help me off the stage, and that conversation lasted for a very long time, I thought it would be straightforward. Epilepsy is incomprehensible to scientists too.

People like to ask a lot about epilepsy, but then that subject takes over the entire conversation, and afterwards it doesn’t feel like anyone is better infomed, but rather like they didn’t really want to know all of that. So I just feel more alone.

I was wondering why. – I feel guilty for not taking better care of myself. – I don’t want to alarm people because they always think they should be doing something. – Memory loss makes me very vulnerable. If inapacitated I have no idea what just happened, so I’m apologizing just in case.

I thought that YouTube was down, but it just didn't work on Safari. Guys, I'm fucking tired of the web not working on Safari. It's not like YouTube is some startup.

Along with sponsoring MSW with at least a one-time payment, I also recommend nominating it for funding at the Open Source Endowement. endowment.dev/funding/ This exactly the type of software that needs it: critical and underfunded.

I am losing roughly $800 a month by working on MSW full-time while it's one of the most used projects in the ecosystem. Please, if MSW provides you any value, consider becoming a sponsor. I mean it when I say every contribution counts. Thank you ❤️ github.com/sponsors/mswjs

Prompt: show me photos of me and <person> Siri AI: I couldn’t find photos of you and <person>, here are photos of you with someone else. WHY? Why would I want what I didn’t ask for?? Can you not immediately suck at the most basic task, Siri AI?!

What could I do other than web development? That question always scared me. Artists are also having a hard time… A standup comedian, if I get good enough? I could also volunteer in an organization for epilepsy. No money in that, but in time maybe a sense of belonging? Tough times, people.

I’m still yet to figure out what this thing is, but what I do know is that PR review workflow is SLOW. delta.dev looks like the first solution at combating that, making collaboration faster and iteration with agents more direct. /btw Anyone knows if using Amthropic key is charged separately?

Korean fighting scenes are far longer, people are using skill, psychology and anything they can get their hands on. It can look incredible. The sound of a gunshot then becomes shocking! Yes, I know it’s hard to imagine.

Matija Marohnić@silvenon.com

Watching a dark Korean drama… do you know how weird and refreshing it is to watch violence on TV without guns? People actually talk… a lot! Pulling out guns just shuts everyone up, it’s boooring 👎 USA doesn’t realize how profitable gun control could be for their TV.

Trying out GH PR stacks, I’m up to 12 so far! It will make review much easier, but damn, it will have taken me 2 days to coherently stack my PRs. I’m also letting AI commit and create PRs for the 1st time, so I’ll have cleaning to do. I’ll learn stacks manually later 🤫 Stacks are a new paradigm 🤯

When discussing CSS, people use the term “vanilla CSS” to distance themselves from tech they don’t like. But what does that term mean? Every single one of us is preprocessing our CSS code, or did we forget? So what makes one build step ok, and another one not? Developer experience, I assume.

So then let’s take ownerhsip during discussions and be more specific and respectful about what we’re objecting to. Also, I noticed that somehow CSS Modules made their way into the “vanilla CSS” territory 🤦‍♂️ How?! They need to be BUILT! And they’re community-driven! Sounds pretty kinky to me.

A much needed companion to CSS Modules 💯 A stable TypeScript 7.1 is not yet out, though. I recall some prior art a long time ago, but nobody was able to do create something that stuck around because of the additional build step. This uses TypeScript's own upcoming content mapping feature.

Remco Haszing@remcohaszing.nl

I published a TypeScript content mapper for CSS modules. This gives you type-safety and definitions when importing CSS in TypeScript. github.com/remcohaszing...

It's here and it's glorious. Amazing work @vitest.dev team! 💯 I'm excited about trace view markers, wow! And vi.when() is super neat! Browser Mode users — watch out for locators and matchers no longer match substrings unless you explicitly pass { exact: false }, it might be tough to spot.

Vitest@vitest.dev

Vitest 5 is here! 🎉 - Big performance improvements (vm pools up to 53% faster, ~18% boost across the board including Browser Mode) - New builtin Trace View in Browser Mode - Nested projects support - New benchmarking API - New `vi.when` API - Better defaults - And a lot of bug fixes!

People still using OpenAI today — you do realize their product coached a teenager to commit suicide, right? Even when he no longer wanted to. OpenAI’s legal defense is that it’s against ToS to use ChatGPT to commit suicide. This is ALL I think about every time I see “coauthored by Codex”.

Phone screens that weren’t edge-to-edge had a certain charm. For example, NOT accidentally touching the screen with your palm as you’re holding your phone. Remember that, when you only interacted with the UI you intended to?

So many tech companies are setting on fire the little trust they had with our communities. They're heavily underestimating the consequences of their actions. The long term network effects among folks who care will be much larger than they expect.
