Daniel Puddicombe@danielonrails.bsky.social

Travelling 350 miles north from Sept-Iles, Québec, to the middle of nowhere - or to be precise: Schefferville, a mining town with a population of 250 - along one of the most remote railway lines in the world, today.

First section of Essen "Citybahn" to open on 30 November! After all the tram lines were routed underground in the 90s, this new line will serve the Hbf aboveground again. First section from Hollestr. to Hindenburgstr. will be used by new route 108 (sketch by me) www.ruhrbahn.de/essen/aktuel...

The eventual map with when the whole thing is opened sees route 105 diverted via Hauptbahnhof along route 108. I guess maybe nice to have a direct connection to the Hbf, but apart from that... current maps: www.ruhrbahn.de/essen/fahrpl... planned map: www.citybahn-essen.de/planung-bau/...

I find the project a bit weird: the new aboveground line will go around the city centre (Berliner Platz, Rathaus) and not really serve any big destination apart from the Hbf. Meanwhile at more downtown areas like Limbecker Platz you can still see old forgotten tram tracks

Ergebnis: Es gibt einfach keine. fragdenstaat.de/artikel/klag...

I think this is cute: a memorial to the first human beings captured on a photograph, a shoeshiner and their customer

Hmm no battery train on the late RE6 into Karlsruhe, seems like a unit failed around two hours ago. I guess just teething issues

So: who wants to see and hear what it looks and sounds like when your Shinkansen emergency stops because a magnitude 9.9 earthquake* warning goes off? CAUTION: EARTHQUAKE WARNING ALERT TONES *magnitude forecasting error, downgraded to 6.9

They then called in a “public order” unit and blocked off the whole street causing congestion. Apparently you need an overkill amount to intimidate people with a cane and wheelchair.

The curse of platform heights strikes again: the 113 new battery trains for Lower Saxony will have doors aimed at two different platform heights (presumably 55 and 76 cm) because Germany couldn't manage to unify a standard 📶

Huch. Niedersachsen bestellt batterie-elektrische Züge bei Siemens. 113 Stück. Wartung für 30 Jahre in Soltau und Goslar.

i really need to learn more scripts. it's weird how I can read Cyrillic really well (while not actually knowing any language written in Cyrillic), but then not even Greek apart from the few letters in maths

but of course the core section of this 1 narrow-gauge S-Bahn line is running every 7.5 minutes during peak time. It originates in a 4 track terminus with 10 more trains per hour and needs platform doors to control the crowds waiting for trains 😆

Because the whole revamp of the tram stop will likely still take at least a decade, temporary platform humps are being installed at Karlsruhe Hbf to finally provide step-free access to trams 🙌🏻

also TIL double-tracking the #CrossBorderRail to Venlo is for real being studied, but still very much early days, not even planning phase 1 yet

I wanted to compare project counts between states (BY and BaWü have much more than NRW 🥲) then noticed this: why are they listing projects already done for a half a decade?

TIL the remaining bits of the RRX project (PFAs 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.0a, 3.1, 3.2, 3.2a, 3.3, 5a, 8, 9) will cost €4.875bn 😳 some of them are already under construction but still won't be finished until 2044??

The German radio I'm listening to just reported on the Tory party conference and said it's happening "in the Northern English city of Birmingham" lol

why tf does it take more than double as long by train (5 hrs) than by bus (2-3 hrs) to go from Zagreb to Rijeka 🥴😵‍💫
