I haven’t slept a full night in three weeks ahead of the polls opening in Brazil today. I might be shouting into a void here, but if you can spare a few seconds to send good energy towards our elections today and for the largest country in South America to beat fascism, please do so. 🇧🇷

This is a really good overview of Armenian linguistics. It’s a fascinating language but a very unrecognisable one and one I never grasped more than a couple of words of in my visits there.

Dr Danny Bate@dannybate.com

Back home now, so this should be the last thing from my Armenia arc. Here are my thoughts from time spent with the wild child of the Indo-European family, concerning the linguistic landscape of Armenia, the lexical makeup of Armenian, and cracking its cracking alphabet. dannybate.com/2026/10/25/a...

I’ve written a song in Gaelic about Rangers’ most depressed player.

Not read a tree-slice book for ages. But am in between devices as I plan my likely shift from Kindle to Kobo. And this by @dominicmhinde.bsky.social is a great read: a surprisingly poetic mix of travelogue, economic and social history, memoir and climate change meditation. About a third into it.

I think I can add political manifesto to my multifaceted current read’s characteristics. “Scotland is a small country made to feel big” is a terrific way of nailing something I’ve never been quite able to put into words.

Despite only living an hour away, I’d never been to the Highland Wildlife Park. Went today. Very impressive. The highlights for me were the wildcats and the wolves. Another highlight was it not raining despite the forecast.

Day 2: assembly. (Plus a trip to the minor injuries unit because the bleeding from my finger wouldn’t stop - don’t worry, none got in the food. And isn’t the NHS marvellous? 111 call to back home after trip was about 2 hours. Bill: £0.00.)

Day 3: after a day of it resting in the fridge, cooking and eating! Was gorgeous. So cheesy, sauce nice and rich (it had a third of a bottle of red wine in it), and I managed to cook it perfectly. Leftovers for tomorrow. (Finger doing ok thanks for asking.)

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

According to legend, it’s 31 years to the day since the Financial Times killed one of Britain’s finest poets? They didn’t mean to. It’s just that Gavin Ewart was 79, and the day before they’d bought him a lunch that involved enough booze to fell an ox. A glorious story, but is it true...?

This is the part we don’t talk about enough. The reversal of good placemaking—from literally ripping up bike lanes to reducing library hours to scraping public transit projects—creates cynicism. Someone should calculate both the social and economic cost of this issue.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

When it comes to actually achieving better cities, here’s something we’re not talking about nearly enough— we’ve moved from eras where it’s hard to get good things done, into an era where even if we manage to get good things done, there’s a real risk it will just be reversed after the next election.

A good thread.

I had to block another friend on Facebook today after observing how he got radicalised in express pace by the content from social media he consumes. (a thread) It's amazing how quickly people become radicalized nowadays. Is it a shot-off of the social media alghoritms set to promote engagement?

As they raced along the road Milo continued to think of all sorts of things; of the many detours and wrong turns that were so easy to take, of how fine it was to be moving along, and, most of all, of how much could be accomplished with just a little thought.

Ok I’m a bit late in this prediction, but it came nonetheless. Now to see if my prediction of down to a dozen by May 2027 comes good. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Oh yes I should’ve added - the first will certainly be within weeks. They have after all a largely inexperienced group that’s never worked together. Skeletons will be found by opponents, or sparks will fly within the group (most likely both). So yeah - someone by summer recess.

A cycle up Glen Affric today. Glorious warm sunshine and autumn colours made for a perfect day. Lots of other walkers and cyclists out, plus lots of people working on various construction sites. I wonder what’s in the pipeline.

Funnily enough the sermon this morning in my church was Matthew 22, the “render unto Caesar” bit whe Jesus is tested by religious folk trying to catch him out. There are some parallels I’m now reflecting on.

This is Tommy. Tommy had a question about my allegiances. Listen to the end to hear about his.

The man once called Valerio barely ate except scavenged scraps. The mail stacked up until it stopped. His beard grew matted, his eyes crazed, his clothes stank. Folk avoided him. He now haunts a room with barred windows, stroking his camera and babbling incomprehensibly. Nobody comes for him.

In every conversation about change, there is always someone who quotes: 'Not everyone can ride a bike.' I answer: 'One third of Germans can't drive a car,' which always earns me ___ silence.

Apparently Stacey Solomon has a new TV show coming out, where she helps cocaine addicts on the road to recovery. It’s going to be called Snort Your Life Out.
