Can we stop calling them "prediction markets" and call them what they are, which is betting/gambling platforms? My teeth itch every time someone says they're "trading" on one of those things. Betting. What you're doing is called betting or gambling, Kevin.

America's gas car fixation, with a backing in toxic masculinity, is going to cede dominance to China in the future of personal vehicles, because they're global, and everyone else hates Elon Musk. Riding around in a new-ish tesla is going to be a mark of shame for anyone not a Republican.

The best most interesting science fiction to me, is a distorted mirror that reflects things the author sees and thinks are worth talking about, using the framing of an imaginary future to discuss them, and the potential likelihood of that future is not always important. It can be? As a warning.

Prediction is hard. Especially about the future. That Yogi Berra gem proves that you don't have to be a sf writer to get irritated with people insisting that you must know what's going to happen tomorrow, but (as a sf writer), I can tell you that this is one of our main occupational hazards.

Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.

So hey everyone, I know it’s going to be tempting to verbally spar with JDA, but as with so many other chuds, the best solution is for everyone to just block him until he gives up and leaves.

As is predictable, that creepy bigot just showed up here to harass people, and we can ABSOLUTELY blame file 770 for platforming him in the first place.

a plan to eventually franchise and scale up. That requires a long term investment as well as short term investment in the commissary, and a decent amount of risk. Is it possible? Certainly! And I bet Greggs has/is looking into it. But it's a complicated and expensive task, with lots of risk.

So they contracted a bit but still exist. This is a common state for restaurant growth. It's really hard once you hit a certain number of businesses, to keep growing. Franchising is popular because the risk gets spread to the franchisee owners!

They pay for the brand, the marketing, the rent, buildout etc. Opening one of these costs about $500k to $1.8 Million. That investment and risk is on the franchisee. To get Greggs in the USA? It'd need a plan that included a commissary, at least a few corporate owned non franchise stores, and

What about starting small and local? Well, it's possible to start with a small local business and expand well locally! That's Xi'an Famous Foods in NYC. They make AMAZEBALLS dishes. Seriously! Try them if you get a chance, and can tolerate spicy. They have a commissary, but they're not growing.

They shrunk during covid. Many places did. But before that, I asked if they were planning on franchising, and they said no. At the time it would require a massive amount of additional capital to replicate the commissary, which was big enough to handle ... I think it was 13 retail locations at max.

So for Greggs to replicate what they have in the UK in the US, they'd need somewhere to make all the Greggs stuff at a uniform quantity and quality to supply US based Greggs and then be able to replicate that to grow more. Commissaries are expensive (startup capital needed) and hard to scale.

All this is a lot of money for a decent sized risk. Jollibee managed in the US by hype and appetite for risk. Jollibee was also global and huge before it hit the US, and almost certainly did a shit ton of research. Could Greggs do that? Possibly! It might take off like a rocket, it might not.

Not at all what people think of as "fancy". The behind the scenes part is where they win - they sell cheap to produce food really quckly. How? Because I will bet good money, Jollibee has a production facility, possibly owned by others, possibly the chain, that manufactures and ships.

Jollibee does not make stuff in-house. It mostly reheats or cooks fresh from pre-cut and measured and mixed ingredients. Sort of like how McDonalds cooks fries fresh, but they come from McPackingCompany owned by McDonalds Franchise Operations. This is the comissary concept. Greggs has at least one!

and flopped. The actual pastries were really good! But the location sucked for rent, and the funding was all from Italy so there was a ton of back and forth. Opening delayed. Permits snarled. A classic tale, and here's the takeaway - NOT UNCOMMON. A lot can go wrong! And often does!

Jolibee is a gigantic global chain that eventually made it to the US. Bigger than Greggs by far, and here's the thing - they did a ton of research, got a lot of people excited, had a good cheap product (more on that later) and lined things up right. Like Greggs, they're an "everyone" food.

people trying to start them here locally, and have worked with some businesses that expanded at a raid clip then exploded... This shit is a HARD business to do well in! And there are reasons why specific chains/franchise operations do better than others. And why franchises exist.

Let me start with 3 examples Bombolini, Jollibee, and Xi'an Famous Foods Bombolini (which I worked with) was founded by an Italian production company and had a shit ton of trouble opening. Lots of supply chain issues. Rent issues. Popularity issues. They tried to get a foothold in the US
