The funniest worldwide immigration situation is Malta: - getting in trouble for selling EU citizenship by investment - being told they need to stop doing it - discontinuing it but immediately starting a new “citizenship by merit” program

- having the pathway to citizenship by merit include how you plan to keep contributing to Malta after citizenship - presumably have a bunch of rich people apply. - stand ready to strip them of citizenship for fraud on their application if they ever stop donating money

We did a mid-year candidate swap a couple years ago, so I see no reason why we should break tradition by not having Kamala Harris replace Platner.

Peter Baker@peterbakernyt.bsky.social

Platner aide lists terms for dropping out: “If he was to step down it would only be with a guarantee of being replaced by a candidate who he believes is true to the values and vision and policy agenda of the campaign that Maine voted for." @shanegoldmacher.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/live/2026/07...

I’m sorry, I can’t suspend my disbelief enough to think that Trump is actually Taravingian.

Reporter: If the president's in such perfect health, why does he keep going back in for checkups? Oz: He likes the results. He does really well. Uh, he aces the test every single day

NEW! Today we @immcouncil.org released our new framework for a credible and humane interior immigration enforcement system. What does that look like? It starts with four basic principles: - Compliance - Safety - Proportionality - Accountability

NEW: Today we’re releasing a framework that lays out a roadmap for replacing indiscriminate mass deportation with a safer, smarter, and more humane approach to immigration enforcement.

Labour will say “your strategy of implementing proportional representation and putting forth a sensible left-wing agenda pales in comparison to my strategy of winning over Reform voters” and then not win over any Reform voters.

I’m working on it, OK? It takes longer to save up for leasing one than I expected, and I’m not so sure about my DIY skills.

I would love to watch a Lebowski / Tremors / Dune crossover about a washed up hippie who takes too may hallucinogens and starts thinking they’re Paul Atreides at the same time that their small desert town runs into graboids.

How Iran gums up the strait:

Chris Murphy@chrismurphyct.bsky.social

5/ And on the Strait of Hormuz, they had NO PLAN. I can't go into more detail about how Iran gums up the Strait, but suffice it say, right now, they don't know how to get it safely back open. Which is unforgiveable, because this part of the disaster was 100% foreseeable.

@jonrauch.bsky.social I'm glad to see you finally acknowledging it, but I'm surprised that you're not really grappling with why you were personally so late to recognizing it or dismissive of people who got there earlier. Seems like an opportunity for reflection or like some mea culpas might be due.

"Recent events have brought Trump’s governing style into sharper focus," Jonathan Rauch argues. "'Fascist' best describes it, and reluctance to use the term has now become perverse." theatln.tc/wVq7MFaa

All I’m saying is that there’s no evidence that Ted Cruz doesn’t munch on Texas’s power lines shortly before migrating south to warmer climates to spawn.

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

If 25% of the population believed that a creature called ‘Glonzo’ caused high power prices by chewing through transmission lines, any competent politician would be negligent in not trying to find a way to exploit this. This doesn’t mean that these people wouldn’t be fucking morons.

i made a model to assign scores for how robustly US politicians oppose fascism & graded 13 leading dems criteria & method QTed, individual results in 🧵 below:

Toby Buckle@polphilpod.bsky.social

i want a "resistance ranking" for dems that grades them on how seriously they're taking this something like support for: 1. prosecuting gop criminality 2. court reform 3. procedural agressiveness 4. end ICE 5. trans rights 6. calling this fascism + points for having taken personal risks

Replying to @y2skot.bsky.social

If you’re going to say that, the least you can do is be logically consistent and oppose nominating him on the grounds that you might accidentally make Kavanaugh’s evil doppelgänger a Supreme Court justice.

Imma be real with you guys the "TESCREAL" stuff is basically the libleft version of rightist paranoia over "Cultural Marxism", where you just smash together a half-dozen things that annoy you and go "these things are all connected and being pushed by a nefarious secret cabal of my political enemies"

(someone who has heard today that today is the start of the apocalypse, didn’t pay attention to the details, and is frantically trying to check whether it’s started yet): “Status” “Skills” “Stats” “Inventory” “System information” “Log out”

Department of War, but the wars are: War on Drugs War on Terror War on Woke

Zeddy@zeddary.bsky.social

Just incredible to write the words 'calling it the war department will curtail mission creep' as the guys renaming it send troops to occupy American cities, put down protests, march in pointless parades, sink random speed boats and spread fucking mulch.

It's fitting that "kitchen table issues" is a reference to sitting down at your kitchen table to pay your snail-mail bills and balance your checkbook on physical paper, something which has been obsolete for decades.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

we see very clearly in public polling that people in california and D.C. hate the deployments and that americans broadly disapprove of them, but here we have an assertion that the smart strategy is to avoid any discussion of the situation in favor of a pivot to, you guessed it, kitchen table issues.

(For those keeping track at home, Mark Cuban's post below is dramatic foreshadowing for Trump arresting him on a pretext sometime within the next year.)

Mark Cuban@mcuban.bsky.social

I’m the furthest from a Trump fan. But the reality is that he would have to shake very hard to equate to the shakedowns of the unrealized cap gains tax and warren’s tax that were proposed.
