Even if "clean-room" reimplementations turn out to be infringing, it'll be a case-by-case question that will take years to prove in court, often against a better funded legal team. So I think restrictive source licenses are pretty much dead regardless of that legal question.

these fucking guys, man. “surely there must have been some mistake” “nah bro we did that on purpose and our company culture is so wild this is a normal thing to say on the public Internet”

Because apparently this needs to be said: if you’re part of a coordinated disclosure process the appropriate thing to do is to talk to the rest of the group before you make unilateral decisions because the process is *coordinated*. It’s right there in the name Don’t agree to that? Don’t be in one

I have a hunch that a bunch of hobby open source is moribund and we’re going to see a form of closed source collectives emerge. I’m thinking about retro game decompilation groups here, but I suspect they won’t be the only ones.

On the other end of the spectrum, I think corporate-sponsored open source is going to slow down dramatically until legal systems decide whether clean room via LLM is real or not.

That side of the world was already wrestling a similar problem with cloud giants eating their lunch (see: the proliferation of non-FOSS source available licenses).

Finding out that an intermediate CA was using single byte private keys is like finding out the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed because it was made of pudding. Our profession is not serious.

TIL: yaml parses tilde as null. I never quite realised this. This is madness. mounts: - location: ~ mounts: - ~: location All valid but that tilde is a null. And yes, guess who tried to use ~ for the home folder 😂

Another #SREcon in the bag! I had an absolute blast - great talks, great discussions, and a great crowd. We caught a lovely sunset right as we were leaving the CCD on the last day. ✌🏻💖

Lastly, some news! I was asked to co-chair next year's conference and will be doing that alongside Effie. I'm really excited to work together on a programme that I hope you all love. #SREcon

I don’t like the UX around passkeys, but the conspiracy post is monumentally misguided.

Everything's faster when your database is close to your app. Today we're launching dedicated read replicas for Postgres. Run replicas across the globe, near both your apps and your end-users.

It's officially pumpkin season, which happens to be a special treat for our ambassador wolves this time of year! 🎃🐺 Although wolves are classified as carnivores, they can sometimes have an omnivorous diet. Along with meat and eggs, wolves may also enjoy fruits like pumpkins. #wolffact

God I would pay actual money dollars for a TV that just functioned as a HDMI to photon converter. I don't want much. I just want to see the photons from the HDMI frames with basically zero latency.

Today we introduce TIN: a powerful and reliable full-text search extension for Postgres. TIN works with complicated WHERE clauses, replication, backups, and maintains correct transaction visibility. It's also mind-blowingly fast.
