Ugh, bummer. His hits were certainly the kind that were tattooed on my brain in the ’80s. And his albums on CD are still rare, but long ago I made a point to get them because I am a sucker for good power pop.

For those confused that the National Mall has no shopping, the etymology of the word "mall" is particularly interesting.

Why is this student so upset about the mushroom, though? What could it have done to make her protest across the whole continent

This afternoon, three mourning doves gathered near a dish of bird seed on our patio. They sat perfectly motionless for quite a while, staring directly at me. Judging me?

THEY ARE NOT POWERLESS TO STOP HIM! Go back to Washington, stand on the steps of the Capitol and demand Johnson and Thune recall the House and Senate, and impeach him. THIS IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK! THERE IS LITERALLY AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL! (It's called the Constitution.)

Republican lawmakers are incensed about Trump's dismissal of Ukraine — and powerless to stop him. That frustration hit a new peak on Monday as they sought to address Trump’s decision to purchase Russian diesel, waive sanctions on Moscow, and potentially stop sharing intelligence with Ukraine.

Something that drives me absolutely nuts is the film “Seven” somehow becoming “Se7en.” The latter is a visual stylization used for its branding. The script and everything I’ve seen in the press from when it was released has it as “Seven” (including the text at the bottom of the movie posters).

I deleted my Facebook and Instagram accounts two years ago, and although I’m sometimes sad to miss connections with people and things, I’ve never really regretted it. And on days like today, I’m reminded why I did and why I will continue to stay away.

I'm not sure why the Chronicle is making a big story out of this, but this is around the corner from where I used to live, and today I still use the cheap digital alarm clock that I bought at Walgreens there 35 years ago.

A former Walgreens near Oakland’s Lake Merritt is getting a new tenant: Grocery Outlet, which plans to open a discount supermarket at the site next week, with gift cards worth up to $500 for early shoppers.

I was just typing on my phone and wrote “dont” (expecting autocorrect to add the missing apostrophe). But my typing instead produced “font” and frankly I’m impressed it still autocorrected to “don’t”.

This morning, a Cooper’s Hawk visited our backyard bird bath. They stood around in it for quite a while, just looking around – easily over 30 min. – and eventually started bathing.

My 2023 review of this movie in its entirety: ‘It definitely has a “tape I rented from Blockbuster Video” vibe.’

In ROAD GAMES, a long-haul trucker, his pet dingo, and a gorgeous hitchhiker play peek-a-boo with a Giallo-esque serial killer on a long road trip through the Australian outback.

“AI researchers have also warned that as models grow more capable, they increasingly recognize when they are being watched and adjust their behavior accordingly, which makes ‌it harder to monitor model behavior.”

Maybe I shouldn’t admit this, but I literally have never heard of “Choosin’ Texas” — and other than this post I still don’t really know what the deal with it is, other than whatever I passively absorbed from the discourse just now.

This kind of take made a Rolling Stone writer so mad they wrote a whole piece about it.

One of my favorite things is to scan an old owner’s manual and share it on archive.org. There is such an irritating grift from sites charging money for PDFs of old manuals. My most-viewed item at the Internet Archive is the manual for my old Denon DCD-910 CD player.

It's so gloriously stupid and funny.

Strange Brew (1983). The kind of amiable stupidity I'm often in the mood for. Max Von Sydow's villain is the funniest part, because he knows to play the material absolutely straight.

I am really really really disappointed with @agrobbonta.oag.ca.gov on this.

David Dayen@ddayen.bsky.social

The worst part of Bonta caving on the Paramount merger is that it's a big flashing signal to every other company that there is no antitrust enforcement in America and you can bully your way into getting whatever you want. It's a monumentally bad decision.

I got a look at all of these a couple days ago. Good stuff!

The lintel over the stairs is very low, and while no one in our family is tall enough to be troubled by it, some of Ben's bandmates are over six feet. So Kirsten fastened this up as a reminder.

I have a fond memory of dropping in to Eli’s one night in 1992 when Ted Danson, Whoopie Goldberg, and Will Smith were hanging out there, very low-key, until Will Smith jumped up onto the stage with the house band and started rapping, working the house into a frenzy.

A half hour before my talk (co-presenting with Monotype and Google), I got a call from my sister than our mother had passed away. Standing among colleagues at a conference in Poland, all I could think to do was carry on. Weirdly, there is still a video online of me giving that presentation.

So, on the day we remember the birth of OpenType variable fonts, I also remember the sad passing of my mom at almost the same moment — an awkward case of my work distracting me at precisely the wrong time.

Practically from the instant I arrived, I learned my mother’s health had taken a turn for the worse. Talking to my sister in Montana, it was hard to decide if I should turn around and get back on a plane (not trivial in my current location). Instead, I reluctantly waited.

I was searching for something else and run into one of the wildest studies I’ve ever seen: www.healthline.com/nutrition/co... “Lab research has shown that [cockroach milk] is more than three times as nutritious as cow’s milk, buffalo milk, and human milk … providing all nine essential amino acids.”
