Could the Kennedy Center be our Maidan? Could this be the point where enough people act on what they believe to establish a permanent physical presence defending the values which made our country exceptional? Like King and Abernathy offering their bodies as “personal witness” In Birmingham in 1963

Are these echoes of Savio's "throwing your body on the gears" to make an intolerable system stop, or the rabbis who joined the civil rights protestors in St. Augustine in 1964 because "injustice anywhere diminishes the humanity of each of us"?

Maybe, finally, this crowd in Washington can grow and stay there. Maybe this can be like what Timothy Snyder said of the Maidan, "people defending what they think is still possible: a decent future for their country.

History teachers teaching the discipline rather than the school subject can use 9/11 to show how two contradictory statements, both replete with verifiable evidence supporting them, can both be true at the same time. 9/11 both "brought the country together" and "divided the country".

US History teachers should take this recommendation and add also read Nicole Hemmer's "Partisans" to realize teaching this period is essential. It's 2026 and we still spend more time on the cotton gin than the internet

"We are accustomed to think that, in questions like the present, involving the first principles of civil liberty and the dearest rights of mankind, passionate invective, rash menace, and random exclamation, are poor substitutes for reason and argument." ~Caleb Cushing (1837)

Hey K-12 Social Studies teachers, this is for you and your geography lessons

To folks who think caving on things like “Lake America” doesn’t matter in the long run… It does. It invites more such ego-serving It suggests that there’s no push back. It teaches people to expect more of the same. It matters.

Fall season previews for America

EXCLUSIVE: Undercurrent interviewed the masked group who approached Clacton Town Hall polling station last night. We asked who they were and why they were there. Farage said he skipped the count due to an “organised campaign” to disrupt the result, but it's unclear who he meant.

Teachers need to take this advice as well. There's not much time left in the summer to save thousands of children from the oceans of AI Slop presentations headed their way

Prebunk: Labour Day is often treated as the unofficial end of summer in the U.S. and the moment campaign season really kicks into gear. As the election cycle heats up, watch for arguments suggesting that it’s somehow normal or acceptable to have federal agents stationed at polling places. It isn’t.

If the gas gauge in your car was inaccurate and left you stranded, you'd stop relying on it. You wouldn't rely on a banking app that consistently miscalculated your cash, or a weather service that was always wrong. Media reporting what the president says ignore this basic understanding of life.

Teaching the 70s in 2026 is the functional equivalent of teaching World War II in the 1990s. Not teaching the 90s in 2026 is the functional equivalent of not teaching the Vietnam in the 1990s.

⌛Don't forget to register for the summer Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminars Online! Ten courses will be offered, including "America in the 1970s: The Era of Distrust," taught by Julian E. Zelizer. The deadline to register for this class is June 8! Register: https://ow.ly/V4FB50Yx0pT

If you're a teacher you owe it to your students to click on this and read Tip #1. Then take a look at your instructional materials and think about what you say to students while assigning and talking about writing. Dollars to donuts you won't find a reference to audience or readers anywhere.

While reeling from the VRA decision, keep in mind that the 35 smallest states together only comprise 30% of the population. This means 30% of the country elects 70% of the Senate. 90 million people in CA, FL and TX have the same voice in the Senate as the 2 million people in AK, WY and VT

To the US History teachers who repeat the "Rosa Parks was just tired" story. Read this before you dare to teach the Civil Right Movement again. "Preparing for the sit-ins took almost two years. "

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

“Training was key. The civil rights movement was often creative, but it was rarely spontaneous. Its members did not just take to the streets to roll the dice and see what would happen.” www.liberalcurrents.com/lessons-in-t...

Red carpet pictures are not for journalists, they are for celebrities, actors and actresses. People who play roles well. So, sadly, these pictures flooding our streams are perfectly appropriate. But these people should never, ever, be referred to as journalists.

Hey teachers - this essay should frame the discussion at your next department meeting

Alan Jagolinzer@jagolinzer.bsky.social

One of the best essays I have read this year, from Dartmouth University Provost Schnell. “The teacher’s role accordingly becomes more important in the age of AI, not less.” www.ncregister.com/commentaries...

This "Performance Expectation" in the NJ Social Studies standards is screaming for a lesson that I have to write this morning - "6.1.5.CivicsCM.2: Use evidence from multiple sources to construct a claim about how self - discipline and civility contribute to the common good."

Hey US History teachers - put this in front of students after the reading from excerpt from The Jungle in that Progressive Era lesson

#Recall: Ajinomoto Foods North America has announced a recall of 16 frozen fried rice, ramen, and dumpling products sold under various brand names. These brands include Ajinomoto, Kroger, Trader Joe’s, and others. The products may contain glass fragments.

Hey US History teachers - this is what you skipped between the Gulf of Tonkin Lesson and My Lai before you moved into that that "protest music of the 60s" Friday afternoon activity. There's plenty of primary sources to draw from, you just have to learn the history first

Christopher Deutsch@drchrisdeutsch.bsky.social

Again, for those paying attention, this is not new!

"when the people on the one part considered the army as sent to enslave them, and the Army on the other were taught to look on the people as in a state of rebellion, it was but just to fear the most disagreeable consequences. Our fears, we have seen, were but too well grounded" Dr. Joseph Warren

Here's your connection US History teachers, add this to your Vietnam lesson

Viet Thanh Nguyen@vietthanhnguyen.bsky.social

I think the last time the USA created regime change solely through bombing was in Cambodia, when a massive carpet bombing campaign so destabilized the country that the Khmer Rouge came to power and wiped out the Royal government—the American ally. Genocide followed.

Looking at this essay through the lens of highschool US History makes it responsible to ask where the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq appear in the curriculum. Limited instructional time forces tough decisions, but choosing to spend more time on the War of 1812 doesn't make sense to students of 2026.

This essay makes a lot of crucial points about why going to war against Iran would be a huge mistake. Have you seen anything remotely like it in the US corporate media? I'm asking seriously. I'm gonna write something about it. theconversation.com/why-it-would...

US History teachers should clip this into their primary document sets for a DBQ on the 20teens

Scott Patrick, PhD@neimanmarxist.bsky.social

This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.

"The presumption of regularity that has been previously extended to Plaintiff that it could be taken at its word—with little doubt about its intentions and stated purposes—no longer holds." It would be difficult to find a single sentence that better encapsulates the totality of our current crisis.

Marc Elias@marcelias.bsky.social

A federal judge in Oregon issued a sweeping rebuke of the Justice Department’s nationwide push to seize state voter rolls, ruling that the department can no longer be presumed to be acting in good faith and warning that its conduct threatens voters and states’ rights.

Just heard a little of the Bessant hearing in the Senate, hearing him and the Republicans repeatedly mention President Biden. Imagine a new coach of any professional sports team repeatedly mention the coach he replaced when asked why his team is doing so poorly.

US Teachers should add this or quotes from it to their Mexican-American War DBQs

This is, from a historical point of view, insane: "With the promise of Manifest Destiny beating in every American heart, President James K. Polk took swift action to defend our Nation’s security, our dignity, and our sovereign borders." www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-st...

Serious question - Looking for individuals or organizations supporting the removal of enslaved interpretive panels at the President's House Site in Philadelphia. I'm creating a lesson that features a DBQ comparing and contrasting views, but don't have something more than the EO and DOI letter.

If innocent blood is not heard and avenged according the laws of every good system of civil government, it will continue to cry, not only against the murderer, but the government & land, which suffers murderers to go unpunished. "Innocent blood crying to God from the streets of Boston" John Lathrop

This ain't right. "Preserve" means to keep something safe, intact, or in good condition, protecting it from harm, decay, loss, or destruction. "Erase" means to remove something written, drawn, or recorded, either physically or digitally or to eliminate something completely, such as a memory.

Hey Social Studies teachers, here's your next current lesson starter. "The news" is not the events themselves, but what someone decided to say and show about the events. Every word, picture and video represents a choice. Source influence public understanding almost as much as the events themselves

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

One court decision, two different headlines. Guardian on the left, NY Times on the right. Which one more directly conveys information and the stakes to the reader?

Today's history fever dreams include Joseph Warren's 1775 commemoration of the Boston Massacre (go read it), Ky. Rep Massie's opposition to the invasion of Venezuela compared with and Lincoln's January 1848 "spot resolutions" opposing the Mexican War and thoughts about Renee Good and Ashli Babbit.

Isn't about time that for Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Stewart to go full Howard Beale and get millions of Americans yelling out their windows?
