I don't think it helps that, even if people don't know the ad is AI... they're still going to know that it looks ugly and cheap and gross. The signature look of AI is the modern equivalent of Papyrus font of ClipArt, but without the folksy charm.

We need to make ANY use of gen AI slop the social equivalent of shitting you pants and eating it. Levels of execration that make a medieval banishment look like a cuddle party.

I was supposed to eat at a restaurant during vacation. The menu was ai slop. We ordered a couple of symbolic starters (cus no other restaurant in the area) and left. We were otherwise planning on eating full dinners there for at least two evenings. Ai slop menu killed that.

Who looked at this and thought “Hell yeah, that looks so good, I’d eat that.” Food photos aren’t exactly a complicated brief. Tricky to get right but the end goal is salivation. This photo makes me want to never eat again.

I imagine if you were in Hell you could be served something called "the original sinner" that looks like this. So if they were trying to invoke horrors beyond the flesh, good job.

uGH. It's bad enough when businesses use ai images in their ads, but ai images of FOOD?? In their actual MENU?? Lifetime internet ban. Something about genAI just looks so repulsive. The opposite of what a food business should want a potential customer to feel.

Frankly, this is ridiculous. AI is cheap in comparison to doing it the “old-fashioned“ way. Small businesses need all the help can get to drive awareness. If you’re not buying from a small business just because they use a bit of AI, you’re the one that has the problem.

So here’s the thing. I don’t care if they use AI. Many of you apparently do. How about we all try to stop the fascist white nationalists ruling our country and worry about the robot takeover later. Good plan? Great! See you at the voting booth.

Businesses sure can and do make decisions. Fortunately, so do customers. Life is hard, and there are things you can do to either make it harder or easier, but business expenses are deductible if you are legit. And you can support Sam Altman or a person who spent years building a skill.

if a business has an ugly genai poster i just won't spend my money there. same with the sudden influx of genai thumbnails on youtube. i just won't watch. I went to berlin pride and there were so many foodstalls that had genai menus and posters. It made deciding where to eat from pretty easy

There was a poster to make a neighborhood produce exchange group bc a lot of people have little gardens here, and I was pretty interested but horrified to see the picture was AI. If they'd used a stock image of a tomato or a farmers market I would have hit them up lol

I don't think it's a good idea to promote articles about AI with AI-generated images either? Not a good look for your brand

Unsurprisingly customers can sniff out a business that doesn't give a shit about quality when the first thing they see is a dogshit ad or sign made by ai.

I mean, it's a bakery. Literally take a picture of the baked goods in the case. That's it. If your product looks good, you'll get business. Fat, dairy, and carbs practically sell themselves.

Quit my last job because my boss insisted on using it on everything. He would spend a half hour getting AI to write a paragraph for him because he sucked at writing.

Yup. Some cheap boneheads think it’s better than human marketing. AI writing is verbose, bland, soulless dreck, often incorrect and utterly lacking in insight.

Ai is such CRAP when it comes to advertising for Foodie places. There are tons of talented Graphic arts people out there that don’t use Ai, would love to get the work!!! I’m a retired Graphics and Printing person. I’m glad I don’t deal with that Ai shit

Companies will say "support local businesses" then use a free plagiarised advert instead of paying an artist. I guarantee there will be people in their local community who'd happily create a proper advert for reasonable money and who would be grateful for the work.

There's a tap house in our neighborhood that has food trucks come by most days. One of them exclusively uses AI generated menus with AI images of BBQ. I've tried most other trucks that show up there. I've never even considered trying the AI BBQ.

I just saw a YT ad where the VO said "and it comes with a three-zero day money back guarantee"... You can't even review your ad before publishing it? And you think people are gonna buy something from you?

Someone keeps advertising their computer repair business on Craigslist with AI generated images, and I can only assume they’ve outsourced all the troubleshooting to AI as well. If they can’t even proofread the AI, I have no faith in them fixing anything complex. bsky.app/profile/lusr...

Lady Lus, Inflate-a-Bou@lusrangifer.bsky.social

So I was browsing the local Craigslist for deals, saw this ad for PC repairs, and like... just LOOK at this slop. Motherboard inside the screen. "Windows install" on the service list twice. The more you look, the worse it gets. What are the odds they just ask ChatGPT how to do everything?

It looks like an acid trip to me, and honestly, it’s not far different. Our brains parse visual noise in a similar way to computers parsing gaussian noise.

On the contrary. I'd like to meet that quartet of youthful coffee cup fondlers and personal space non-respecters, and I can't wait to visit Moofica Eobery! Or Duees Surreneft Bakery. Whatever. If Trnndny Darcod likes it, that's good enough for me!

Yeah, the chai place I used to go to replaced all their better signs with AI ones, AND they have a guy warbling on the accoustic guitar blocking the entrance every weekend now. They must've been mad they had too many customers and decided to make some serious adjustments

Record store near me was posting AI crap on FB. They got called out on it, but the owner doubled down and even attacked those that called him out. I've noticed he hasn't posted much AI stuff lately, but the damage is done. I've dropped some serious cash in the past but won't return.

After the local psychic closed up shop, the space was bought by someone selling and renting retro arcade cabinets. I *should* be excited, but the window wraps were all AI-generated. And every time I see it, I can't help thinking "if you don't care how it looks, why should *I* care to go in?"

Come to think of it, I think it was the first AI ad I saw in the wild. and it SUCKED. "Cool, arcade stuff... but why are the controls so messed up?"

Im gonna assume that if you choose AI art over photographs of your food, that you're probably trying to hide how much your food sucks and I do not want to spend money to find out.

it does suck when I see small shops doing it, like burger joints or street food vendors, it's funny that AI makes me wish they'd have just painted the name of their shop with cheap paint and crappy handwritting, I'd appreciate than AI shit.

When places are cutting corners by using AI, I have to assume they're cutting corners elsewhere. It's off-putting and more so with food. Cutting corners on food safety is dangerous and I won't risk it. Might as well be putting up signs warning me of food poisoning.

A dental clinic recently opened up in my area and is offering free cleanings, and while I initially was interested, I quickly said no when I saw that their flyers were AI-generated. If they cut corners on their flyers, what else are they cutting corners on?

The thing is that even people who don’t hate AI in general hate AI image generation And using AI images sends a message to customers that you’re lazy/slapdash/deceptive

I told this VA that I would not hire them because they used ai in their branding (pfp, header image, etc). I'm pretty sure they got mad and complained to the VA community I was in, but it backfired and the community put up a rule that they would not allow genai of any kind in the group.

Was just talking about this on Reddit and the fact that the typical Chinese place with 15 year old photos of the food laminated and hung in the windows to fade in the sun is 1000% more legit than any of these places because they actually took pictures of their actual food.

I mean, who cares for small businesses, but yes I think in the US advertising (maybe just TV and print?) needs to use the actual food item and no photo touchups like airbrush/digital. But they do "style" the item to look better in the ad, like having all the pickles on one side, etc

Boy do i have a story about whiny people using ai at work that i cant share... but they realllllly don't like being fucking called on it and fuck me. Brains are apparently optional these days

Look. I get that there is a lot of a**hole energy in that post, but a picture of a handwritten note saying "we're hiring" makes me think it's not 100 percent jerk; there's at least a smidgen of a sense of humor there.

Gonna be perfectly honest, Im not so confident any human actually wrote that note either. For something that has millions of images of other handwriting something like that to scrape..... it could just be a "good" generated image.

Publicly announcing “I’m an asshole, don’t work for me!” is so funny because you just know he will also complain how “no one wants to work anymore”. Shocking that people won’t want to work for someone who believes they are owed employees for simply existing.

F'crissake, that scene is positively maniacal. The blonde facing the "camera" looks as if she were pasted in from another dimension. ...and that goddamn lighting; it's like a hipster coffee joint in The Shire – or maybe a Thomas Kinkade painting...? Yeah... Thomas Kinkade Does Edward Hopper.

My cousin, a local mechanic, got some grief for using AI ads on Facebook a few times, and has switched to making his own intentional bad MS Paint ads instead, and I personally love it. There’s an honesty to his little scrawls that the much more detailed AI slop lacks. It is, in a word, human.

Two new restaurants opened up nearby that I normally would have tried but they are heavily using gen AI ads so they’ve lost my business forever. I already have my local hangouts, I’ll just keep supporting them instead.

Great piece. Midway through I thought: 1) Slop art puts Thomas Kinkaid to shame, and that's saying something. 2) Is any artist creating meticulous oil-paintings in a style that intentionally looks like AI — making the super-realists seem sadly unironic by comparison?

knowing kinkaid and his weird mass marketing MLM situation, i wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these programs are trained on his stuff. same energy as far as stuff being just formulaic and made to be consumed

Yup. The first things I see as a potential customer are either your ads or a menu. If I see a cheap, fake shortcut taken on those, then I’m going to assume that the business cheaps out on everything else too. It’s like when you get an email with “Hello [insert name], …”, without the your name

I want everyone reading this thread to take a minute to look at the majority of people complaining about AI. I see far too many anonymous accounts w/animated pics or photos of objects and absolutely nothing on the profile saying they're real people. You can't judge a company for doing what YOU do.

If we're talking about AI food, no argument from me. But I have VERY MIXED opinions on AI artwork of ppl. On damn near every pic site, you'd swear Black ppl were as hard to find as an episode of "Friends." I use Image Generators to get Black ppl in ALL pics! idoseecolor.substack.com/p/pixlrs-ai-...

idoseecolor.substack.comPixlr's AI Image Generator is a welcome relief for black web writersBlackTechLogy: Could AI photo software be hurting black graphic designers?

I’ve left multiple reviews and told people by word of mouth to avoid certain local businesses because they chose to use AI images of their food. Honestly if you as a restaurant owner cannot accurately depict your food to me before I order it, I don’t trust you and you shouldn’t be operating.

Yes. AI ads tell me that you don't have a product that you are proud to display. That even YOU are disappointed in. Why would I buy from you when you have no confidence in your own product? Not making a comment, just gone. 🤔

Even leaving aside that it looks like steaming hot garbage, I want there to be false advertising cases against this stuff. If you're going to put up pictures of the food you supposedly sell, it should have to be a real picture of actual food at the establishment

I think we have different pictures in our minds of "those laws". In Japan, you nearly have to take a picture of *exactly* what you are selling, otherwise you get publicly shamed and fined. God I wish we had this.

Anti ai People on bluesky would rather "boycott" ai and People who use it then petition and work for better business practices, advertising problems, corporate overreaching, better pay for workers , human rights violations. Its all AIs fault for them. Guess they like low hanging fruit

I'm not sure milk being substituted is the best example here because there's at least a couple good reasons you probably wouldn't want to leave milk under stage lights all day

Is it crazy to say that if you need days of photoshoots to capture your cereal, you might be doing something unnecessary and would benefit from simply doing less, specifically in a regulatory environment that ensures that your competitors are also doing less so you are not at a disadvantage?

yeah but the cereal you see, even if it's the best 70 pieces made by the factory that month, is the real cereal, because it's deceptive advertising otherwise. the milk isn't in the box, that's your own deal

U.S. laws have become extremely outdated because we have octogenarians in the Senate who think that because something worked in the 60s (probably didn't work then either) than it works today and doesn't need to be changed or updated.

If you ever saw syrup going onto pancakes on a commercial, no you didn’t. Actual syrup gets absorbed and makes the pancakes consistency change. What you saw was motor oil go onto that pancake.

"We don't need to hire an expensive food photographer, we'll just use AI." Here's the thing: people have a uncanny valley response. If food doesn't actually look like food, people will find it unappetizing. Food photography is all about making it look *extra* appetizing, because that drives sales.

Yep. There’s a long history of food photography where lighting, placement, plating, and whatnot were done by professionals who specialized in that. But those were photos of actual food, prepared by chefs, not this crap.

I'd rather see clipart or mediocre actual pictures slapped together in Word than any of these AI posters. It makes me never want to do business with that person or company

And all the platforms are fighting us too. I help run a small restaurant and although we take great care to avoid AI, it keeps cropping up in our backend software or our delivery apps, etc. DoorDash has actually replaced our real photos with their AI ones without telling us.

A restaurant started out their website with an AI-generated image for the interior (that wasn't anything close to real). I reached out as a photog and shot a photo for free, because they offered free food to poor folk. They used my photo! Except all their menu pictures are AI generated now, too...

Check out this hilarious slop ad I saw in Slovakia last week. Almost every ad or public bit of imagery in Eastern Europe nowadays is 100% like this.

There's been multiple places ive sat at, noticed an AI sign, and got up disgusted to the confusion of the staff. Like sorry you'll figure it out someday lol

Truly I swerve from any business using these generic, lazy, AI created slop advertisements. It inspires no confidence. I can stomach & understand using it to edit an actual photo but to create an image of your product? No. Show me the thing or I will not purchase.

Literally your one job is to show how good your food looks, so if you can't even be bothered to take a fucking picture of your product, then there's no way I'm going to your restaurant.

What? You would visit the S°Weet Surrender Bakery? With their Meta add that looks nothing like the store? And a phone being held by their six fingered employee? And coffee that clearly isn't even hot? Good choice.

Spare a thought for Dave, their 14-foot tall friend who always has to wait outside. His friends don't care because they are assholes. Dave is also an asshole.

AI advertising shows fundamental incompetence. And sometimes that doesn't matter: if your kids' sports organization is three men who are good with kids and love the game and are *terrible* at communication and logistics, I don't care. But if that's not the message you're trying to send, well.

It’s crazy how a unique and fun loving bar near me does this. Just take a low fi, no frills photo or something super diy and amateur looking. It would fit your brand and also be kinda endearing.

Seriously look at this. Does that not look like a worm sandwich to you? You have photos of the food you make and sell. The sandwiches are delicious. Just use an actual photo of it!

I made an Instagram video about this a little while ago. It’s been flooded with comments of people saying if they enter a business and see AI posters, they will turn around and walk out.

I hate that my first reaction was "okay, this one isn't THAT bad", but for whatever reason, bread textured to look like a tire REALLY fucks me up, and the bread looks sorta realistic, but yeah, I hate that chonky lettuce

i've long struggled to describe the vibe of images like this, but i think i've got a good analogy now: this stuff comes off compared to actual visuals of actual food like cockmongler's leering grimace is to the genuine, warm smile of a loved one

Excellent! I've touched in this before, but this piece articulates what a lot of us are thinking. In our own context, maybe the naturists, and especially the naturist organisations, using AI for their own advertising and promotion will rethink what they are doing.

A local bar had a flyer out that was clearly AI generated even though the image was simply of the establishment. They couldn't even be bothered to walk across the street and take a picture to avoid losing customers.
