Bolsonaro, Vucic and Orban out, Flamingo and Cockroach Revolutions, French uprising and Iberian housing movements, Nepal and Bangladesh popular insurrection, Iranian and Serbian movements, these too are heralds of the current moment. We are once again in a time of movement and revolution

I still feel palpable relief about Brazil. I’m looking forward to reading more about how it happened.

At one point he had a Whatsapp group with 10 million people in it, coordinating action. Which I didn't even think whatsapp was infrastructurally designed to support. And yes, whatsapp is of course a meta network, but the strategy was to be everywhere, to act redundantly, to be unbannable.

With 83% of the vote counted nationwide, Lula has stretched his lead to 2.8 million votes. That's a lead of 51.4% to 48.6%. That puts him on track for a victory that could be larger than his 1.8% win four years ago, which would be an immense comeback. He's even up in Minas Gervais now, by 0.6%.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

I think one of the best aspects of this story is just how *average* the cop is. This is pretty much what most cops are like. They believe they are doing a good job.

In Paris, the uprising continues. On October 18, masses of people once again took to the streets. Crowds gathered at Place de la République and in the surrounding streets, erecting barricades as police deployed large amounts of tear gas. 🧵

If you want to be in solidarity with French students, but you don’t know about Parcoursup, it’s time to learn. Lots of parallels with US higher ed struggles over debt, accessibility, and so-called “AI.”

Protesters around the world are using the Straw Hat Pirate Jolly Roger as a symbol of freedom. We plan on doing a detailed report on this phenomenon in the coming weeks. In the meanwhile, here is an updating list of countries where the Jolly Roger has appeared:

Riots by multicultural, intergenerational crowds against deprivation and brutality by state and capital give me more hope than anything election related. There is almost no one in corporate-owned media who recognizes that as even legible, not to mention legitimate.

We’ve been in a polycrisis of world systems collapse for well over a decade and every political problem is either caused by and/or exacerbated by that. That needs to be the starting point. Our systems are failing. How do we build overlapping, resilient, convivial survival practices in the ruins?

obviously many more important takeaways from the French approach to protest, but much respect to the absolute varsity level Whimsy of throwing a whole ass piano at the cops

Really inspired by the people of France today!!

Emily Herring@emilyherring.bsky.social

Parisian cops started tear gassing and using water canons before the protest had even properly started. Had never seen anything like it. This was us trying to get to the authorized starting point of the protest and we could hear the explosions of tear gas in the distance

Thank you to everyone who stood with me over the years. It’s been a scary journey but I have always been grounded in my work and ability to provide exemplary service to my constituents. Trump and his administration have been after me since I arrived in Congress.

This 52 minute documentary/interview - now available for the first time with English subtitles as detailed in the @feelingtheory.bsky.social thread - is great fun. All else aside, he was an entertaining speaker and engaging and provocative interlocutor. A great way to celebrate Foucault’s centenary!

“…because what am I forgetting, what have I not mentioned among these disciplinary models? It is of course the workshop, the factory, which was also one of the principal and most important sites of disciplinarization.”

Thinking about what we mean and what we have meant by “struggle” today for Foucault’s 100th birthday. May we all be dogged in our efforts to think differently.

Foucault is one of my favorite readers of Marx (excerpt is from an interview in “The Japan Lectures” from 1978)
