One little annoyance I discovered after some use now is that the lock mechanism for the expansion ports aren't really that solid. So if I pull out the USB-C based charger it sometimes also pull out the expansion port. Doesn't hurt the experience much, but would have expected better.

I've been running a @frame.work Laptop 13 Pro with CachyOS a couple of days, and this is a really nice laptop! It is my first non-MacBook laptop since 2019 or thereabouts. First off. The build quality is superb. It feels a tad bit lighter than a MacBook Pro 14". But the aluminum body feels solid.

I've yet to run very heavy tasks so can't speak to raw performance, but the single fan cooling design means the Framework Laptop 13 Pro underclocks the processor a bit. I wouldn't bet on this laptop as a raw powerhouse. I'll have to spend some more time with it to figure out where its limits are.

The Linux compatibility is amazing. All the hardware just worked out of the box, even on a community supported distro like CachyOS. This fact combined with the repairability and customizability with different port extensions and screen bezel colors means this computer can truly feel like your own!

I opted for the Intel® Core™ Ultra X7 358H processor, 64GB ram, and a 4TB two-side NVMe drive. So I had to remove the SSD cooling pad, but so far temperatures seem decent. Will have to see when I throw heavier work on it. But so far for light work it has been dead silent and temps in the low 40s.

Battery life is excellent. You can easily run it a whole workday with light work. Search the web for proper battery tests if you are curious. So far it seems battery life is comparable to MacBook Pro which is a welcome feature for a Linux laptop. Sleep mode worked out of the box on CachyOS.

The haptic trackpad is at MacBook Pro level. It feels very responsive, and I've yet to experience any misclicks or palm interference. Keyboard is very good, but the key travel is greater than on the MacBook. I like it though. Bonus points for dedicated Norwegian keyboard, no æøå Scandi soup.

The screen looks great. Bonus point for 3:2 screen ratio instead of the usual 16:9. There is actually room for both a status bar and lots of vertical text. Reading web pages on this screen feels good. Animations seem to run really smooth on this screen. Not tested videos that much.

There is very little flex in the base, maybe a tad bit more flex in the screen. The hinges are solid and the one-hand open is real! The screen wobbles ever so slightly while typing, but no worse than my MacBook Pro. In general I'd say the laptop feels very solid.

I just watched Hope at the Bergen International Film Festival (BIFF). Is the latest movie by director Na Hong-jin who’s directed action thrillers such as The Chaser. The right amount of action, absurdist humor and suspense. Fantastic camera work! A movie worth going into without reading about it.

Now people seem satisfied using Chromium with slightly different wrappers. Yeah, it is better than using Chrome proper, but you are still essentially allowing Google via Chromium to decide what the web ought to look like. Including how browser extensions are allowed to interact with websites.

We're essentially hurtling back to the Internet Explorer-situation of the early 2000s. Everyone using a browser engine controlled by a big corporation who's motivations are far from benign. Mozilla, for all their faults, fought the browser monopoly and delivered us from Internet Explorer hegemony.

The Framework Laptop 13 Pro review embargo is over and reviews are poring in. So far it seems like most reviews are quite positive, with some understandable negatives pointed out. Here is a sort of summary from me (awaiting my own laptop due October).

Seems the main takeaway is a bit lower performance than laptops with comparable specs, nice build quality, and very good battery time and screen. LPCAMM2 RAM is crazy expensive right now, and if you order now you pay the full new RAM price which is up to $1600 for the 64GB module VAT not included.

Performance is not comparable to competitors with same CPU. A single fan cooling design necessitates running the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 a quite low performance settings. But the battery life and fan profile is apparently quite good. Definitely no MacBook replacement in terms of raw performance.

Maybe it is time for a new animation studio to appear, with fresh ideas like Coco, Soul and other gems Pixar has produced in the past. Disney clearly does not value Pixar. It is a real shame artistry and hard work is rewarded with layoffs so often.

mass layoffs at Pixar despite Toy Story 5 about to cross $1 billion at the box office. there is simply no amount of money that will make corporations happy enough to not upend people’s lives.

@frame.work unfortunately had to downgrade RAM for 13 Pro pre-orders batches 5 on due to RAM supplier doubling their pricing. I'm disappointed, but not too surprised. Now will have to think about whether I cancel or not. I feel 32GB ram in 2026 is borderline for heavy development work.

The AI bubble is squeezing the consumer market hard. Prices are ridiculous now. 21 000 NOK for 64GB ram is insanity. I thought it was very high when I pre-ordered already, then it was 11 000 NOK. 😅

I don't blame Framework for the high prices. But it is surprising they sold pre-order batches for more inventory than they had secured supplier contracts for. Maybe their RAM supplier pulled a fast one on them, or they gambled on price forecasts not being too catastrophic.
