After having to deal with fracture-related infection and its impact, up close and personal within my family during the past year, our latest research publication hits different... Deeply dedicated to see our 'Fibrilysins' developed towards clinical use in the near future.

Just finished reading "Microbe Hunters" (1926). What a book! It brings to life the great discoveries of microbiology - and, even more, the people behind them: Leeuwenhoek, Pasteur, Koch, and others who revealed the invisible world shaping disease, wine, beer, and food 1/5

Perhaps the most fascinating part is that the book was published 100 ago. It celebrates how far we've come in understanding microbes. Yet in 1926, antibiotics hadn't been discovered, and the molecular basis of life was a mystery I wonder what wonderful things would be known 100 years from now 4/5

Despite its age, Microbe Hunters is surprisingly readable, though some words, once commonly used, are now perceived as offensive. Highly recommended to scientists, young and old, who are driven by that irresistible urge to discover something nobody knew before. Fin

What makes this book special is its sense of adventure. It transfers the primary feeling of chasing a discovery and making one. The egos, the bitter rivalries (even a challenge to a duel!), the sacrifices, and scientists who died by the very microbes they pursued 2/5

These scientists were heroes, but also deeply flawed, obsessive, and wonderfully human. some flashy and extravagant (Pasteur), others introverts (Koch) or dreamers (Metchnikoff). We all know these personalities. Reading the book, you realize that scientists have always been... scientists 3/5

Much of the functional biology encoded in genomes remains hidden in noncoding DNA. In a preprint out today, Patrick Hsu and team introduce COMPASS, a genomic language model-based approach to systematically map this underexplored sequence space.

Excited to share our work on bacterial immune signaling! Our preprint reveals how RNA-guided Cas13 cleaves host tRNAs to generate small-molecule messengers that activate 2TMβ, linking RNA recognition to membrane damage and phage defense. 1/11

Sam Hobbs and Philip Kranzusch show how CBASS defense systems sense phage proteases to initiate the immune response in bacteria. The bacterial cGAS becomes activated when cleaved by the phage protease. Nice!

Andrew Santiago-Frangos and colleagues characterize Tiamat, a giant bacterial defense protein originally detected in the Millman 2022 study, and show that homologs of Tiamat are encoded in animals and plants. Nice to see the mystery of Tiamat starting to unravel

Andrew Santiago-Frangos@asantiagofrangos.bsky.social

Our lab's first preprint! The antiphage protein Tiamat is an ATPase and DNase with homologs across the tree of life. What started as undergrad Shirley Yuan's summer project grew into a paper and a collaboration with @jpkbravo.bsky.social's group. Link: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Eirik Lågeide, Gal Ofir and colleagues discover an antiviral protein in plants based on its homology to a bacterial antiphage defense protein called Tiamat. Cool!

Very excited to share the first preprint from my PhD with the community! This is also the first paper from the Plant Immunogenomics group with @galofir.bsky.social, so stay tuned for more! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... 1/n 🧵

Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR. We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share it...

Great work led by @jmouradesousa.bsky.social, where we find that phage and satellite defense hotspots change by recombination exceedingly fast, producing novel defenses. Oddly, phage & their satellites exchange defenses with lots of elements from theirs and other types, but not among the two.
