If you haven't yet read Delon's "controversy" section on his wikipedia page and you still think he was more of a Greek god than a real person, I suggest you to watch Indian Summer (1972). Achingly beautiful movie where he's at his most vulnerable and humane

Yi Yi (A One and a Two), Edward Yang (2000) Over its 173 minutes, the film follows a middle-class family in Taipei across a single year. Yang portrays three generations with a largely static camera and long takes, often framed through windows and glass.

It wasn't really tactful for Hal Hashby to reenanct Mishima's seppuku just one year after his death. I would expect better for a such an emphatic filmmaker /s

I wonder how many people we could trick into watching the full 9 hours if a big account posted something like: "so you haven't seen any doc as good as YCSE? Try watching Tie Xi Qu: West of the tracks and report back to me"

Liv Ullmann "Books have always been living things to me. Some of my encounters with new authors have changed my life a little. When I have been perplexed, looking for something I could not define to myself, a certain book has turned up, approached me as a friend would."

I don't think the films works overall, but the Private K parts in Her Private Hell rule and Charles Melton is so good in them. Really channels the animalistic streak of Joe Shishido, whose film Refn was clearly homaging

Mangrove (2020) part of Small Axe miniseries One of the best courtroom drama, of recent years at least. It's not necessary saying how it blows The trial of the Chicago 7 out of water, but I'll say while completely different movies it's has a better portrayal of a black revolutionary group than OBAA

Still thinking about the 4th dream in Resurrection (2025). Bi Gan got into my brain circa 2018 and made a film out of some of my obsessions of that time (The Addiction, Noè, WKW, Rebels of the Neon God, Only Lovers Left Alive)

Rock your heart out! 🎸❤️‍🔥 LINDA LINDA LINDA from Nobuhiro Yamashita is now streaming on the Criterion Channel!

Lemming (2005) is funny because at some point it turns into The Conversation but with an hamster instead of bugs. It's relatable because I too would get paranoid if I wasn't sure of being worthy partner of my wife Charlotte Gainsbourg

He had more iconic roles in other films, but Ben Gazzara for me will always be the blind man who wouldn't acknowledge his blindness while the whole town went along with it in Dogville, and Vincent Gallo's father in Buffalo '66. What a guy. He would bring so much to any role no matter how small

I'll have to get around A Book of Memories at some point Parallel Tales seems to be even more my thing but it just feels too daunting

The Burbank Utena chair…

Nick Carr@nickcarr.bsky.social

In Burbank, I often drive by this park where, last year, Ron Howard and wife Cheryl made a very sweet donation on their 50th anniversary: this "kissing chair," two beautifully engraved bronze chairs reversed so a couple can sit and face each other. There's only one problem -

Images - Robert Altman; or hints of 3 Woman (1977) Sharing the same editor, and with their fragmented guilty ridden leads, it would make for a haunting double bill with Don't Look Now (1972)

Imagine if the guy from La Cabina (1972) got stuck in this telephone box on a beach instead of urban Madrid. It would've been way less scary

Like I don’t care who you are, that’s just good movies.

The first shot from 964 Pinocchio clearly demonstrates that Wenders' biggest influences for Perfect Days were Ozu and the 1991 seminal sex cyborg movie!
