By the way,why do I call it LLM assisted coding, and why do I use AI at all to make my game(s)/projects when I theoretically am able to code them? At the moment I have a hard time to sit down and code at all, my brain just won’t let me and deadlines make things worse, ...

but I have ideas and I can do the art and the sound, so I permit myself to use a LLM to get through this tiring slump, to get things out of my head and to make things, hopefully one day I find a way to do it myself again 🤷‍♀️

LLM assisted coding tip 2 : Use hierarchical Markdown system for your LLM to write concepts, docs, user instructions and info on LLM workflows, configs. Get inspired by the Zettelkasten system and have the LLM write tightly connected atomic (one concept), easy searchable notes, make use of tags ...

and yaml metadata, make sure to use the LLM to keep these consistent and tight, they tend to drift and mushroom, make the LLM document the system in the system, with the LLM naming itself as author, I use @obsidian.md and am testing foam in VS Studio, but the app is not important, the principle is

LLM assisted solo coding tip 1 : start by making a local git repo first, including all the documentation (using a Markdown system of your choice) and LLM control files for this project and regularly either commit by hand or make the LLM commit (every 2-3 hours)

This “I have hand drawn thousands of animation over the last 5+ years for my game” may actually not be the flex you think it is, that is you, doing what you want to do and maybe not what the game needs, if its just a hobby you make for yourself sure, if you want people to actually buy your game …

Finished my first webgame in Typescript and Phaser with a mini fm synth audio engine, either its going to be in the game poems magazine or I will post an itch.io link. Learned a lot, about Typescript, Phaser, Webaudio and how to accelerate learning and coding with Codex. Not start, accelerate !

It makes me faster, because I have build games in C++, in Java & Processing for a game jam and work with Unity, Godot, Unreal and have seen tons of other engines. I also know how to program FM synthesis and use it to make music. It isn’t a shortcut around knowledge, even if it helps you organize it!

So Game Poetry game jam, web game, sure doable in Unity and Godot, but I also had some very specific ideas on sound, so web audio it is -> phaser seemed the best solution as a game engine here and then my friendly LLM suggested Typescript, sure lets learn a completely new tech stack on the fly

GB Studio’s adherence to the Gameboys 8x8 px tiles and 16x16 px sprites, means I can actually design them on my iPhone while commuting, Pixquare works pretty well for sprites but also larger tile maps, its good for training my imagination and lo-fi game art drawing skills

SOME GENERAL TIPS FOR STEAM GAME DEMOS (from someone who has played so many of them) Note: These tips also apply to games in general! They're good tips!

Have been introduced to @gbstudio.dev it seems to be the right amount of restrictive and malleable to do some silly little games, when my brain is stressed out by my longer term projects, also music with a tracker, always a plus

Tested #Godot cutout animation & animation trees for my #ggj26 project, but I am seriously intrigued by the Polygon2D node & after watching a playthrough of „Another World“ by Éric Chahi seriously considering it, less sprites, more flexibility & possibilities, give me vertices and I get ideas

Using Reclipped to make screenshots and export them to markdown, which I can then put into my PARA formated ObsidianMD vault, which I use for all my stuff that needs planning, doing, task managing, which has my game dev stuff, including the game design

Productive unproductive day today, had to rethink the term level, what is it in the context of my game, what work does it need to do, am I over complicating things?

Thinking of migrating my game dev laptop to Linux, its an old one and probably would not survive Windows 11. Also seriously who would want Win 11? The laptop still ok it has a pretty ok graphics card, my project is 2d, lo-fi and I am using mostly open source or OS agnostic small dev software anyway

Playing "Small Spaces" think I missed my calling, anybody in need of an interior designer? Or game levels, same principles, elevations, line of sight, points of interest and color schemes

Have everything layed out in my brain and have a lot of AI generated code (not that I couldn’t write it myself, but its just boilerplate) I just need to copy, my brain just doesn’t let me do it, undiagnosed but probably existing mild case of ADHD and midlife hormonal restructuring are no fun

Told a couple from Berlin how I got to the middle of nowhere from the airport in Berlin, now sitting in a bus with handwritten station information to hopefully somewhere, where I can find a bus to near FEZ, wish me luck

If you're visiting Berlin for any of these events and are interested in synths I recommend checking out the new Synthesizer Museum in Kottbusser Tor, went there earlier this week and had a blast. Also I really want a Korg MS 10 or 20 now 😅 www.synthesizermuseum.info

Fun fact: if you're buying from a creator on etsy, you can reduce their etsy selling fees from 6.5% to 2.5% by ordering via 'shopname.etsy.com' instead of 'etsy.com/shopname' or searching from the main site. It costs you the same but the creator makes more

In response to the Polygon and Giant Bomb news, I created an indie and worker-owned games media starter pack. I’ll keep adding to it, so suggestions and recommendations are greatly appreciated. Please share!

The positive thing about working at a game dev coworking spaces like the #swissgamehub are surprise events, where you can meet old friends and make new ones without having to do anything

Actually I could just use polygon nodes for my avatar animations, it would probably make them much more malleable and since the avatar will be relatively small and simple (think Sword and Sworcery) that could actually work #godotengine #gamedev #cheatingonanimations

Todays think session was like I need this problem solved, and my librarian brain was like #godotengine has polygon2d nodes, so now the mathematics part of my brain is having a party thinking about what we could solve with polygons instead of sprites

Just to reiterate following step-by-step tutorials will not help you make games, just copying code will not help you in the long run, don’t ask how, ask why and use your friendly LLM not to tell you how to, but ask if you understood concepts right or to give you alternatives

So today, next to mentoring a student, decorating my workspace, I managed to have a polygon change form and flying around in Godot, yes its not much but I am still getting to know my way around Godot and just following a tutorial mostly doesn’t help understanding, so I am poking around

Would you like to showcase your game at Fantasy Basel? The SGDA once again will have a booth at Fantasy Basel this year, promoting amazing games from Switzerland! SGDA members can still apply for one of the 10 booth spaces until April 13th, 2025.

On my way to claim my now fix desk at #swissgamehub, committing to actually doing this, at least I have the luxury to enjoy myself and not care if anyone wants this game, I will still try my best to make it a really good and fun playing experience

Still on my discovery journey of #godotengine, but there are also some game design decisions to be made, for instance do I want to spawn bullets or just place things in the level so that the player can see how much is left and have them fail, if the level runs out of things to hurl at them

Shader should be much higher on my list on ways how to solve things, especially vertex shader will probably make things much easier than anticipated, I just need to get into the right mind set

For our next game I'm looking for tranlators in French, Italian, Portugese, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. Any recommendations? *It's not an immidiate request, yet. Translations will be in a year, but I'd like to calculate stuff better and have recommendations to work with.
