Seems I’ve been yelling about this same argument in defence of Canada for a long, long time now. Get out and vote, make sure your neighbours do, too. No to the Nine. Stay in Canada.

Shannon Phillips 🇨🇦@sphillipsab.bsky.social

On Canada Day, it’s worth remembering our love of our imperfect, maddening country is not conditional. Our Canadian-ness doesn’t come from whether govt enacts our preferred policy choices. If that were the case, social democrats like me would be the OG separatists! #ableg @thestrategists.ca

With just five days until Alberta’s referendum, civil-rights lawyer and activist Avnish Nanda asks what kind of province we want to become. Nenshi has lambasted Smith for not following through on her promise to actively campaign for a united Canada. Last week, Nenshi noted that not only are Smith’s cabinet members not getting out the vote, many have left on foreign trips during the critical lead-up to the vote.

Brilliant stuff here that adds to the No to the Nine campaign for the Alberta referendum

CUPE Alberta@cupealberta.bsky.social

It’s wild how much we’re all being manipulated to think the problem for everything is immigrants. It’s absolutely not! We hit the streets for an experiment. Watch the reactions and share the truth before we vote. Vote NO to the 9! And Option 1 (Remain) on Question 10. #abpoli #canpoli #ableg

Overriding local decisions that allow for more housing supply makes zero sense. Watching a conservative government add heavy regulation to free-market housing supply is simply mind-boggling.

Good stuff here from the Leader of @albertandp.ca about this crucial Thanksgiving weekend and the last push before the Advance Poll for the referendum next week.

A final push for unity from the Alberta NDP Naheed Nenshi says they're using party funds for new pro-Canada ads during hockey games to fill a void he says has been left by the premier He also argues the municipal matters should be left up to municipalities MORE: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/v...

Here’s a gift link to the Globe and Mail investigation about American interference in the Alberta referendum, and the separatist operatives (one of whom is a UCP President) who went to the United States to offer them our water and oil. www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/64d9ad7...

The time change option chosen unilaterally by Danielle Smith, in the face of overwhelming evidence supporting Standard Time, will cause health harms for those in northern AB, specifically. Imagine being a parent in Peace River with a sunrise closer to 10am. Mental/physical health harms, etc.

Paul Fairie@paulisci.bsky.social

Just looking up sunrise times for the next few months as one does, and I'm realizing that sunrise in Calgary under the new time zone rules will be after 9AM between November 20 and February 9. Sigh.

New ads just dropped - There’s a poll out tomorrow via CBC that apparently shows the UCP down. That’s because Danielle Smith’s catering to separatists is unpopular, and the closer we get to Oct 19, the more people are (rightfully) blaming her for this debacle. No to the Nine.

Alberta's Voice@albertasvoice.ca

On October 19th, send Danielle Smith a message. Vote NO to her nine costly questions nobody asked for. No to Danielle Smith. No to the Nine. #ableg #abpoli #alberta #abreferendum

I cannot fathom why we wouldn’t want to preserve this piece of Canadian history.

Sharing again my appeal to save the Memorial Organ at the University of Alberta, a Canadian War Memorial that currently faces dismantlement and abandonment. Please contact your MLAs and MPs if you haven’t already.

This is a great idea!

David Shepherd@dshepyeg.bsky.social

Alberta artists… I’ve heard from so many of you who are angry & frustrated Danielle Smith’s referendum & policies don’t represent you. I’ve got an idea how we can help rally our family, friends & neighbours to vote for the Alberta we believe in. Take a listen. Let me know what you think. #abpoli

a lot of people want to believe that right-wing beliefs are rooted in some legitimate material grievance. that makes it easier to imagine that if we simply solved the material problem, they’d deradicalize. but they won’t, because they aren’t disillusioned, they’re just morons.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

I know this is a common belief, but it’s not true. If people went anti-vaxx/MAHA because they were excluded from the medical establishment, we would see sky-high rates among poor people, minorities and the uninsured. We don’t.

Oh, this is extremely interesting and helpful…

Robson Fletcher@robsonfletcher.com

Everyone's talking about how the Alberta referendum will be all about *turnout*. But how, exactly, would different turnout rates among separation supporters vs. stay-in-Canada supporters affect the outcome? I built a tool where you can play with the numbers and see for yourself:

A strong majority of Albertans support export taxes on oil, gas and potash. Danielle Smith is offside 2/3 Albertans.

John Michael McGrath@jm-mcgrath.bsky.social

Good morning. Ipsos has restricting energy exports to the US with 2:1 support; an oil & gas export tax at nearly 3:1 support. *In Alberta.* (Table 2.) www.ipsos.com/en-ca/canadi...

Seems problematic for Canadians… 🇨🇦

Seth Abramson@sethabramson.bsky.social

The argument that Donald Trump invaded Canada today is much more compelling than many realize. The border between Canada and the United States runs through the middle of Lake Ontario. By claiming to have the power to rename the entire lake, Trump is claiming the lake. That's invasion by declaration.

I look forward to October 20, when the Government of Canada is past the separatist referendum and discovers two things: 1. the “rule of law” means upholding and enforcing the Canada Health Act, and 2. Canadians support Medicare as part of our national identity.

David Coletto@davidcoletto.bsky.social

New poll: 53% of Canadians oppose Alberta’s Bill 11 after learning what it would do, compared with 33% who support it. Concerns focus on higher costs, unequal access and pressure on the public system. abacusdata.ca/canadians-w...

It’s very gross when a premier whose province has been minimally affected by tariffs, because of the nature of its industries rather than its political leadership, takes shots at other provinces that are feeling more pain.

Jonny Wakefield@jonnywakefield.bsky.social

Danielle Smith on banning U.S. alcohol sales: A: "Part of the reason why we've had a light touch of tariffs in AB is that we've engaged in a very constructive diplomatic relationship with the US ... 97% of our products go across the border tariff-free, and we have not done nasty ads in the US."

Incredible energy for the Stay in Canada campaign. In all 4 corners of the province. Good momentum going in to the fall campaign.

Hon. Thomas A. Lukaszuk@lukaszukab.bsky.social

ATHABASCA #ForeverCanadian volunteers, you are amazing! Thank you for your commitment to Canada. Again, amazing turnout. Lawn signs flying off the shelf. I took a moment to explore the town and chat with locals.

The Canada Child Benefit kept 580,000 Canadian children out of poverty in 2023, the last year for which I can find full figures. The CCB now functions as a de facto Universal Basic Income for people with children. It’s an extraordinary achievement that should make us proud. More to do!

Mark Carney@mark-carney.bsky.social

The Canada Child Benefit helps support more than 6 million kids. In July, it went up. Parents across Canada will now receive up to $8,157 a year, per child. That’s more money to help with the costs of raising a family.

Not to beat up on Douthat even more, but I'll just say: it has never, in all of post-war American history, been more crystal clear exactly who your enemy should be. Never. If it's not obvious to you, you are morally & intellectually defective.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

In dishonor of Ross Douthat's last NYT column, I'm breaking my self-imposed ban on reading him—smug bad faith, whiny victimization, and steadfast refusal to let evidence affect opinion—and will screenshot and comment. This is the column if you want to read it yourself (I don't recommend it). 1/x

Oct 19 - referendum day in AB: 45 million paper ballots - no tabulators - because we are governed by conspiracy nuts. Solution? Request a special ballot. Take yourself out of the line. Folks who are less engaged than you are may not withstand the lineups. The fewer of us in them, the better.

Jared Wesley@jaredwesley.ca

With record lines expected on Referendum Day, only the most committed & available will stick around to cast a vote. This is why advance polls and mail-in ballots are so important — even for those of us who prefer same-day voting. To make it easier for everyone. open.substack.com/pub/drjaredw...
