Instead we should focus on which messages, ideas, and visions beyond "we need to beat the far right" have mobilized large parts of society. We should understand the organizational structures behind these victories and acknowledge that they are about more than defending the status quo.

We need to stop always making the far right the subject of political agency and the object of voter decisions in our analyses of contemporary politics. The success of the far right is not inevitable. But single elections do not signal the end of the far-right threat to our democracies.

Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different

Hello to all my English-speaking followers. I know this text is more than overdue. My mental health has become even poorer due to the Brazilian's elections and the fascist threat that comes with it. But I managed to turn my anger into text somehow. buttondown.com/haileykaas/a...

Some people would “use Wordpress” or “have any sort of template” for a website but I believe in struggling thru improving my html/css skills bc one day I will make flexboxes work and it will feel beautiful.

Two years ago I made a REALLY long twine game as an Xmas gift for my wife, which involved internalizing the special weird way Harlowe works, and there was nothing as gratifying as penetrating the mysteries of that veil of confusion. When I got storyleta to function as intended??? Forget about it.

What are the downstream effects of an ever ballooning police budget that continues to eat away at the general fund completely unchecked? Budgets are our “value statements” as Mayor Frey has said himself; what does it say when we cut Election and Voter Services to make sure MPD gets a blank check?

Serafina@serafinas.bsky.social

I should have mentioned that my office is Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services. The Mayor's budget eliminates seven staff members less than two weeks before an anxiety-inducing midterm. No more high school election judge program. No more voter outreach.

Also, as I have recommended multiple times: Go vote with someone vulnerable to the voter fraud conspiracy theories. Friends with a trans person who will be under suspicion bc of their ID or a brown person who speaks mostly Spanish? Don't make them go to the polls alone.

Celeste Pewter@celestepewter.bsky.social

If you haven't already, 1. Make a plan to vote, 2. Study your ballot this weekend, 3. Help your family and friends make plans too (e.g. can you take them to the polls/vote centers or drop off their ballots?) 4. Ask them to pass it forward.

I have so many thoughts about cozies, horror, hopepunk, and fiction about Resistance, and every time those subjects come up I am tempted to articulate them but I can never figure out how to in a cogent manner.

To be clear I don’t mean like “stories where something good happens despite all the bad shit out there;” story labels like this are so slippery and subjective, which is part of what makes the take mediocre.

Actually if all cozy sff (to switch vague marketing subgenres) included a bit about like Signal best practices somehow I think that would improve my relationship w the genre.

… and cozy comfort reads & Hopeful Resistance Fiction (where hopeful here is a pretty strict category) sit really weird in my head after the year I & my state have had. TBH I think the more positive & uplifting a story is re: resistance against oppressive systems the more educational I want it—

I love writing bleak shit. I also like writing about the transcendental impossible beauty that is human connection & communication. I like having access to multiple modes of expression & genre toolboxes. I think it is sad to only read one kind of thing or only write one kind of thing …

If you consider the dehumanization and attempted erasure of at-risk communities a distraction from "kitchen table" issues, you really need to take a look at who's setting your table.

been recuperating from mild success (which fouls my humors)/trying to enliven my mind enough to write something substantiative by playing blue prince. it’s going uh …

I think a lot of ppl don’t know that (acc to old coworkers who worked at B&N before working at indies) the books put on display at B&N are specific and mandated and not like, because they got a bunch of copies or because someone working really likes the book and wants to push it. It’s not organic.

Like TBH if you are an author and know ANYone who works at an indie I would prioritize them getting an ARC and info above like. Everybody. I sold 12 copies of This Is How You Lose The Time War shortly after release. I had a friend who sold some ridic number of Rivers Solomon’s debut (like 40?).

Obviously those books are also REALLY GOOD but a passionate and knowledgeable bookseller will fight managers, Ingram, and your publisher themself if nescesssy to shill for you. They will not shut up. They will hand it to the guy who comes every Tuesday and make him walk out with it.

Or maybe ppl do or maybe why that makes such a huge difference is obvious but as someone who only ever worked at an indie that blew my mind. Inventory numbers and common sense (“we got three pallets of flame tree remainders” for ex) drove display decisions but so did individual efforts & advocacy

I would just put out whatever I wanted as long as I could make everything fit, and did a LOT of shelf Tetris to get books I believed in displayed or at least faced out anyway support your local indie, thx.

It’s so fucking stupid. Like it’s a city I get it but I walked home from work at 11 pm all the time on my own. I walk around with my baby and hang out at the public library. The worst part is not being able to access early readers nonfiction as easily bc sometimes there’s a cop parked there.

Radicalizing experience listening to these real estate weasels talk about being afraid of Uptown. I'm about to post something outrageous like "I'd rather live in a failed neighborhood than have people like you want to come here."

Like I do get it bad things do happen, but it’s the persistent attitude of complete fear that really kills me. How do you ever leave your house if you’re that scared of walking to the fucking Penzeys

Coming across a rogue reskeet of a Will Stancil post is like bumping into a leopard in a grocery store. Oh god what’s a leopard doing here. He can’t possibly use the self checkout line. He’s knocking over the Kraft Mac & cheese display, someone call the manager.

So, an update on moving: I may get the chance to stay in Seattle in the next 3 months or so. I've talked to people and they think they can get me settled to move by the time I go back to FL in December. So, if you'd like to give me an early birthday gift and help me stay out there, here you go:
