👋🏻 I spent 4 hrs after school contacting parents and grading
School board elections matter!! They have tangible effects on the day to day lives of families & educators in your neighborhood!

I named a character in MAZYWOOD “Priscilla Stephens” after my 88-year-old aunt, a 1960s civil rights warrior in ailing health. She came to my book signing in Miami and was surprised to hear her name in my reading. 😍 I am still trying to raise money to help offset her bills.

I think we underestimate the appeal of antigambling politics because every problem gambler is surrounded by 3-10 people who are absolutely sick of their shit.
Leaving this beautiful, moving photo by Antonello Veneri here as a brief balm. Taken this morning in Salvador, one of the cities most affected by voter suppression, and showing the pure elation of Lula voters coming out of the polling station after exercising their democratic right.
Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.
I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
I have discovered the exact, objective, scientific amount that Elizabeth Holmes and Nathan Fielder are lying and/or credulous. By solving this it means that I’ve won, which is the point of the movie, and really all movies if you think about it.
Just went to a retail GameStop for a piece of my son’s Halloween costume. If you’re young and wondered what the final days of Blockbuster looked like, you can get a taste of the experience right now at your local strip mall
thinking a lot about verbal & reasonable* zombies (mads, crossed, the sadness) making a comeback after a global pandemic that turned everyone atomic and insane
*able to reason their way into maximizing the amount of pain they can cause
if you ever happen to see someone post a joke you don't understand or discuss a subject you aren't familiar with, you are well within your right to complain, and perhaps even scold them if necessary. you are their customer and you have rights
i was thinking about this all day today, i think “fedwalking” might be one of the most perfect words invented to describe exactly what it sounds like. i was on the verge of tears the entire time reading this
(9/?) “Eyes Don’t Melt” in Under a Malevolent Eye, @cursedmorsels.bsky.social (3900 words, horror). Popsicles, Signal chats, biblically accurate helicopters. My attempt to transmit the somatic experience of living in mpls during the surge. www.cursedmorselspress.com/product/unde...
There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere*
Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines
As a species we decided, “we will survive”
Let’s do that some more

As a side note, this ad is part of the growing movement, supported by many "liberal"/centrist publications, to demonize adult abuse survivors who go no-contact with their parents, and to render it a moral/mental health panic on par with what they've done to transgender people.
You'll hear conservatives say that mental illness started with Millennials, then you read a 200 year-old book and it's all gay guys throwing themselves on the ground in weeping fits or manic ladies beating their brains out against the wall and everybody's like, "Yeah that happens sometimes."
Our bill to stop private equity from buying up homes is now law.
Despite Donald Trump's refusal to sign it, his Administration must now implement it.
We'll be watching closely to ensure it's done right.
The Treasury Department on Thursday proposed rules on new restrictions on large investors buying single-family homes, one of the first moves in the federal government to implement the bipartisan housing package that passed over the summer.
choice feminism's great triumph was making it so i'm the bad guy if i have qualms about the men my female friends bring around. because like, it's their choice. they're choosing. it's actually super misogynistic for me, a man, to question their choice, and double misogyny if a girl has qualms
the internet used to be a place for me to connect with faraway trans and native people bereft of parental or tribal supervision to discuss our conditions and now it's the place where i get to see the same people post "my bf scolded me for crying in a restaurant" and i can't say "dump him" or else
Hundreds of thousands of children were literally killed due to Elon Musk’s actions.
Yet you will still see people treating him like just any public figure, buying Teslas, etc.
The world is a dark place. Especially the parts that treat the rich as inherently more valuable than everyone else.
logging on to the "forty year olds with the maturity levels of neglected children in the gifted and talented program" website and getting really annoyed that they're forty and acting like neglected children in the gifted and talented program
is there extra credit for having the moral high ground on the lance oppenheim movies? you don't understand, i need this, papa says one more A minus and i'm banned from the scholastic book fair
"AI Detectors", which do not work, exist not to catch people using AI but to create a climate in which so much work gets falsely flagged as AI that we all just give up and accept it as normal.
movie discourse on this website is all people being like "I actually ALREADY decided to never see this PROBLEMATIC movie because I NEVER leave my house"
