Mostly lurking, in accordance with the robustness principle. In this house we believe distortionary and redistributive issues should be separated, the notion of a "fiduciary" is essential to the future of democracy, and fascism must be destroyed.

I don't agree with it, but LaurieWired has more than earned the right to that opinion imo. After all the joyful, generous insights into computing she's given us, she's entitled to a little grace when reacting to her area of expertise being described as one that people don't "need to know" anymore.

this started a holy war, so let me state a very plain and direct argument for this the democratic primary is when we decide if we get to have things be good or mid the general election is when you decide if you dislike nazis

fascinating and somewhat conservative revelation of the last decade: legislators who do not observe sartorial decorum tend to be completely untrustworthy

The "Elbows Up" movement did a lot to raise awareness among ordinary Canadians about how we could successfully detach ourselves from the US economy by supporting local businesses, etc. We need the same, but for Canadian corporations that may be supporting human rights abuses in the United States.

A lot of folks don't realize the social contract is actually a cease fire in some ways.

dr. rich traditions, JD@helldude.bsky.social

we've sort of reached the platonic ideal of the paradox of tolerance here. they've repudiated the social contract, thus it definitionally no longer protects them or binds you vis-a-vis them

i suspect there are a lot of morons in a lot of european capitals right now wringing their hands about the risk of escalation. here's the truth: the real risk is failure to escalate. backing down is showing weakness. trump will know it. show strength instead.

I get the discomfort about legalized assisted dying, but it really is the most humane possible outcome. Certain conditions are so miserable that death is obviously preferable, and no other right in this world is as fundamental to a free life than the right to choose its duration.

As I have said long time, the court really did take over the job of social issue response with pressure relief votes as legislature deferred. Executive agencies really did take over the job of creating legislation as the legislature became evermore calcified. Everything is the legislature breaking.

In effect, Grok has answered the question: What sort of logically internally consistent worldview does it take to produce content that won’t routinely offend MAGA sensibilities. And the answer is “a Nazi worldview.”

You guys need to wise up, you’re not dealing with conservatives or libertarians trying to implement conservative or libertarian policies. You are dealing with fascists trying to destroy the idea of the truth and replace it with the exercise of power.

As annoying as the Hashtag Resistance was, they understood how bad stuff could get, whereas the Anti Resistance "don't be hysterical" types have proven themselves to be complete morons every day for 10 entire years

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

personally i think one should just ignore anti-anti-trump academics who have done nothing but obscure the reality of the situation facing the nation in favor of grinding axes against people they don’t like

We can debate what to do with powerless nazis in a liberal society. Maybe they should be tolerated, maybe they shouldn't. But when nazis take power, there's only one thing to do. Don't hesitate.

this facebook thing is hideous and hateful and egregious in its singling-out of the lgbtq community, but also, just occurred to me that we are now set on a course towards boomers eating tide pods

That’s true in recent history! In other times the price of fuel / the means to cook (wood fire etc) was much higher and exhibits economies of scale (ie once you make a fire it can cook lots of food for bunch of people). AFAIK In Ancient Rome only the rich could afford to cook at home.
