So if I'm understanding this correctly, the DSA's national political committee is going to force DSA LA to rescind their endorsement of Nithya Raman unless she gets on Zoom with them in the final days of the campaign to talk about Israel....

Ironic since Claremont Graduate University is the closest thing to the intellectual center of Trumpism and at the same time, its finances were wrecked because chud immigration policy choked off the supply of wealthy foreign students who'd pay for a PhD.

The President of the Claremont Institute is a CGU grad. Also, the founder used to teach at CGU, among other Claremont Colleges.

It is OK to look down on any Republicans you might come across in your life and to think of them as inferior human beings.

When I was younger, I used to expend a lot of energy to not learn anything about normie culture. But now that I'm old, I'm pleased to see that it comes effortlessly.

Social scientists have lent our names to calls for electoral system change and rule of law, because of the findings of our disciplines. We should do the same for anti-trans ads, which have dubious benefit and demonstrable harm. My latest at GP/BP goodpoliticsbadpolitics.substack.com/p/social-sci...

goodpoliticsbadpolitics.substack.comAnti-trans campaign ads are a bad strategy. Social scientists should say so.If we care about democracy, we should not tolerate this

There are many trusts, especially in tech and media, that should be broken up as a matter of good policy. The fact that they collaborated with Trump doesn't hurt either.

Quinta Jurecic@qjurecic.bsky.social

if only there had been a way to predict this might happen based on nearly every midterm election cycle in modern american political history

If we can solve our disagreements within the bounds of liberal democratic governance, then you're my ally in the fight against authoritarianism both in America and overseas.

Lula is to my left. Magyar is to my right. And I don’t care in the slightest, because they are the candidates of democracy against autocracy.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

It's really easy, folks. You're never going to out-bigot the Republicans, no matter what you think that buys you.

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

Whatever happens tonight, Serbians deserves credit for engaging in the democratic process. That they are continuing to participate despite obvious efforts by the Vucic regime to stymie their rights is an indictment of the culture of defeatism in other parts of the region.

Whether it's a Republican president insulting people's faith or nationality, or whether it's a Democratic president insulting people's preferred upscale suburban restaurant chain, both sides need to bring down the temperature.

This is why SB 79 needs to expand into more counties. It's also why Metrolink needs its own fundraising and governing structure, not dependence on counties.

I would say the same exact thing about downtown Riverside. Southern CA has a lot of interesting downtown areas that are undermined by all the endless car-centric sprawl and car-centric development that such sprawl incentivizes.

Complaining about "Gen Z Stare" is a confession that you have never done menial work in your life and cannot recognize a teenager who is high on the job.

I think all Americans, regardless of race, class, or partisan affiliation, can all band together and ask "Who is Joe Manchin, again?"

Wether it’s Vivek attacking a sexual assault victim or Acton being assaulted as a 12yo, both sides are at fault. Thank you for having the courage to say this Joe Manchin

Somewhere, in some law school, there is a person that can write an article whose premise is that every official act of Trump II is invalid because [something]. Then, the Senate can ask the new justices if they believe in Something Theory before they get confirmed to the new packed SCOTUS.

The fundamental divide between those outside the authoritarian right is whether a new election is meant to restore liberal democracy after a temporary interruption or whether it must create a new constitutional order after the old one was damaged beyond repair.

Michael@fleerultra.bsky.social

a basic fact of our constitutional "order" that a dem president could have an OLC memo arguing that the neo-confederate rightwing legal movement is a national security threat and assault on the constitution. then, in his capacity as the commander in chief, order the assassination of a SCOTUS justice

Every society has its dumb, deranged and self destructive elements. But failed societies are ones that design their governments around the desires of those people.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

the UK is just cooked. seems like every boomer there has taken up NIMBY as their retirement hobby because god forbid people have access to affordable groceries

Our constitution does not have a mechanism to discipline a criminal president besides impeachment and thanks to Trump v. US, we also have no way to hold them accountable after they leave. But in this case, following the law is more corrosive to democracy than ignoring it.

The reason I say that it's OK to look down on Trump supporters and to consider them morally beneath you is that they've been hearing him say things like this for 10 years and not once did they decide that it was too much.

Trump says of Somalia that "all they have is people that shoot you all the time ... it's a shit house country"

You gotta respect a guy who made a boatload of cash simultaneously giving powerful people an excuse to do nothing while concern-trolling anyone who criticizes that advice. It's like if someone told me that drinking beer will make me lose weight while also calling anyone who disagrees fatphobic.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

Literally everything is better now than when I was born in the 1980s. The only thing that's worse now is that back then, you had to carry around a heavy boom box that ate up expensive batteries if you wanted to make noise in public.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Debating is just charlatanry. There will always be an information asymmetry between the audience and the speaker such that the audience just evaluates what the speaker is saying based on how much it confirms their priors. If it happens at all, debate should take place in written form only.

Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò@olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social

it's understandable to think of constructive debate as an ideal and then to figure that *any* debate is therefore a step towards political values and virtues. but I think most debates, particularly in the social media age, make conversations and outlooks worse than where they started

Just got around to reading this great article by @adambonica.bsky.social and @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social on the barnacle consultants dragging down the Democratic Party. I wonder if these consultants are an offshoot of the party's gerontocracy problem and if a new wave of electeds will shake it up?

newrepublic.comHow the Consulting Class Is Eating the Democratic PartyFundraising costs gobble up most of the funds raised. Billions are spent on TV ads that have virtually no impact. Candidates may win or lose—but the consulting class always wins.

Many of these consultant worked their way into the party network via relationships with electeds and many remain because they have a patron saint that funnels them work. But the composition of the Dem. caucus is slowly shifting and with that, perhaps the type of consultant who stays employed.

It's strange that these images are only coming out on some fringe news site and no mainstream outlets have picked them up--especially given how much coverage there was of our withdrawal from Afghanistan under Biden.

Man, Hegseth's Department of War is even more buffoonish than everything else. Kinda amazed how the US military didn't just have some basic war plans they could activate. Their lack of preparedness is astonishing. meidasnews.com/news/so-much...

Most other democracies don't have as many layers of government as the US does. You also have a robust party system to guide your vote so you can just do the equivalent of "vote blue, no matter who" and be done with it.

ryan cooper@ryanlcooper.com

I kinda suspect American voters are likely dumber than average in democracies because our system is so complicated and nonsensical

I wish people knew how expensive guns are. As a hobby, it's like 10 times as expensive as golf. You have to be riding horses until you're finally spending more on your hobby than owning guns and taking them to the range.

It really knocks you on your ass when you realize the problem is that the fascists are largely made up of a bunch of grown men in arrested development who spend their adult lives playing pretend and making everyone miserable as they LARP through the world.
