What needs to change to limit overshoot and bring global warming back to 1.5°C by the end of the century? From renewable energy to coal and methane, UNEP's latest #EmissionsGap Report sets out the changes needed to help make that possible. Read more: https://ow.ly/PgXu50ZZEY5

The 2026 UNEP Emissions Gap Report is out: The Point of Return. 🌍🌡️🔥 It's sobering but actionable. Decades of inadequate climate action have closed off opportunities to limit warming, but ambitious action today can still prevent much greater harm. A thread of some of the highlights 🧵

This is a good excuse to say if you prefer difference scores, you can still condition on the pre score. You can think of it as a difference-score ANCOVA, and it brings the same power advantages as the conventional ANCOVA. Here's a full blog post on the topic: solomonkurz.netlify.app/blog/2023-06...

Today I learned the hard way that evidence synthesis is about to get a whole lot harder with AI-generated fake publications. Particularly unpleasant: I learned this while hunting down a climate change impact attribution study for a systematic review.

'A plausible paper can now be produced in a day, and the process of producing it does not necessarily enhance knowledge, build a resource, train a student, or advance any other goal of biology research' 'we could use this surge to acknowledge that paper counts are meaningless'

Ran Blekhman@blekhman.bsky.social

Some of my thoughts about the surge in AI-generated papers, why this feels like a completely new kind of problem, and what this means for how we evaluate science in biology. Out now in PLOS Biology: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

So host parents dedicate all their effort to raising the cuckoo chick, which often becomes much bigger than their adoptive parents! But they seem unable to notice the fraud and actually look pleased to see how big and strong 'their' kid has become

But hosts don't like raising others' chicks. It's a lot of effort that doesn't help their fitness. So there's a coevolutionary arms race where hosts become better at discriminating strange eggs, and cuckoos produce even better mimetic eggs. The resemblance is puzzling!

Cuckoos don't build nests or raise their chicks. Instead, they lay their eggs in the nests of other species (what is called brood parasitism). They put their own egg after removing one from the nest (trying that parents won't notice!)

It happened in a seminar yesterday at my institute that somebody bullied a phd student to change an analysis, because two of the predictors were correlated. Multicollinearity is a brain worm, isn't it? It never makes sense to choose control variables based on pre-model correlations.

I often see people argue that clean energy is not reducing emissions, because it just adds to rather than replaces fossil fuels. This argument is deeply misguided – clean energy built since 2005 has displaced 23 billion tons. I dive in over at The Climate Brink:

theclimatebrink.comWhat if the world hadn't built wind and solar?Clean energy does not simply “add to” global energy use; it displaces fossil sources that would otherwise get built.

I often see people claim that because clean energy sources like solar, wind, or nuclear are manufactured using fossil fuels their emissions are high. But thats absolutely not the case: even accounting for full lifecycle emissions they are vastly better than burning coal or gas:

good morning. I strongly suspect that we don't really know (or agree) what geographic ranges are, and therefore, our estimates of how species' ranges are shifting in the Anthropocene are uninterpretable. I wrote something about this: doi.org/10.1111/2041... and I'll share the main findings...

21627 applications. Nothing to celebrate here. Impossible to evaluate fairly & safely. Neither the science (too diverse & possibly LLM generated) nor the soft criteria (likely LLM generated). Without an interview stage - a security risk! marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/whats-new/ne...
