Bringing back freedom of movement would be breaking a promise... but getting rid of it in the first place wasn't?????

“The perception that promises can subsequently be revisited by a political establishment removed from the realities of working communities has left lasting scars”, writes Labour MP @melanieonnmp.bsky.social 🗣️ EU free movement debate risks undermining voter trust www.politics.co.uk/2026/10/mela...

Robert F Kennedy turned into Robert Kilroy-Silk so gradually I didn't even notice. (It's barely worth engaging with this rubbish, but an Arab won the Nobel Prize for Literature just 5 years ago)

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

The fact Arabian countries - many of which are organised like MAGA's dream - rarely win Nobels, yet members of the Arab diaspora win reasonably often, should destroy these racists but alas they're too thick to be destroyed. They'll just go "uh duh you believe in magic soil lol"

Since his ennoblement in Boris Johnson’s 2023 resignation list, Tees Valley regional mayor Lord (Ben) Houchen has claimed more than £25,000 in tax-free daily “attendance” allowances from the House of Lords for 73 days when he hasn’t voted, spoken or performed any recorded parliamentary activity.

What do you MEAN HMPO wants a colour photocopy of every single page of my German passport??? Why??? (I can also just send them the actual German passport, but I'd rather not entrust all my passports to HMPO at the same time)

I need to renew my British passport. RIP beautiful red EU passport, u r wiv da angles

The good news for the rainforest is that the Bolsonaro family is not returning to power in Brazil. The bad news for the rainforest is I just had to print colour photocopies of every single page in both my and my wife's passport. I think the two cancel each other out.

which is also why EVs are murdering legacy automakers because it's just _easier_ to make one

Electric cars don't have gear shifters, because they don't need them. It's just much easier to run an electric motor in its efficiency sweet spot compared to an internal combustion engine - basically any speed/torque combo is a sweet spot for an electric car!

This post is unavailable.

These are "efficiency maps" - they tell you how efficient the motor is at a given speed of the motor and torque output. The electric motor is over 90% efficient at basically every combination, the IC engine peaks at 37% efficient, and drops off hard outside that central sweet spot.

[me, ref passports going dark blue] Ridiculous, it's the same document, the attachment to symbolism is immature [me, ref the possibility of passports becoming maroon again] RETVRN

The last red passports were issued in March 2019. If Burnham gets a move on, there could be someone who renews from one red passport to another.

The MTA’s primary union is spending a ton of money to try and swing the vote against Hochul (the most pro-transit governor in generations) When Hochul wins by double digits anyway, I hope she remembers this and plays hardball with the union on efficiency improvements like OPTO and automating IBX

The New Racism is just as serious in its potential impact as the old, but it is far, far, far, FAR more stupid. 'The calibre of racist has gone sharply downhill' sounds like it should be the start of a joke, but it is also: just demonstrably true!

A weird change that has taken place in my lifetime is that in the past, British racists were aware of what mixed-race people were and were furious about it, as opposed to the New Racism, which frequently seems actively confused by the birds and the bees.

My most joyless leftwing opinion is that any homework that is, explicitly and obviously, homework for parents is bad pedagogy, unfair on parents, particularly on mothers, bad use of the teacher's time and bad for social mobility.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Finding some of the reaction on here to the 'stockpiling' stuff a bit odd. The Russians successfully firebombed the last prime minister's house! There was a cyberattack on a French supermarket a few weeks ago!

Largely because if you see how much bottled water you'd stock for a family - 4 litres per person per day - if supplies were cut off entirely, the advice would be ignored. Better to aim for 'three days of no internet connection and intermittent power and water supply' and build from there.

Here's a weird little physics thing I think about a lot: Iron and nickel are very common metals, because they're the end product of many nuclear reactions. This is because they have the highest binding energy per nucleon of all isotopes. But also...

This isn't as astounding a coincidence as "The sun is both 400x larger and 400x further than the moon, making them appear the same size and giving us perfect eclipses" but it's an interesting one imho. Or is there a connection between nuclear binding energy and electron exchange energy I'm missing?

(could we even develop electric technology in that universe? Like, what if the main ferromagnetic element happened to be the unstable, radioactive technetium, which is extremely rare in nature. How would we ever have discovered and built motors and generators?)

Iron and nickel are (ferro)magnetic because the quantum structure of their electrons happens to be just right to induce all the atoms to line up with each other. This effect is stronger in iron than any other material. And as far as I can tell, there's no connection between these facts!

We live in a universe where magnetism is really useful because our cheapest and most abundant metal is ferromagnetic. Everything from fridge magnets to scrap yards relies on it. Yet nothing says that must be true! We could have lived in a universe where only rare freak metals are ferromagnets
