If I could give one piece of scientific advice, it would be to avoid doing what everyone else is doing. Unless you want funding and people to care about your work.

I've finally found it. The most painful science montage in movie history. Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus (2009) Yes, Gen X, that is singer Debbie Gibson as oceanographer 'Emma MacNeil'. But the important thing is: she's keeping an accurate lab notebook.

Another Oxford cargo bike theft!! Mine is customised by having a lot of stickers and nail varnish my kids did on it. Stolen on Meadow Lane at 18.30 today locked to a Sheffield stand. Please LMK if anyone sees it for sale. Probably in Cambridge. ;)

I wish Calgary would embrace other themed costume weeks like it does Stampede. There should be a week where we dress up like magicians. Another where everyone is now a zebra. It would be good.

AI detection systems - its AI, why would anyone concerned about AI trust these?

Jason Sanford@jasonsanford.bsky.social

I agree 100% with Steven Vickers that authors will be falsely accused of using AI in the coming years. In particular, authors like myself whose works were stolen to train AI systems are at risk. When we write in our own unique styles, AI trained on us will quite likely flag us as using AI.

I can't be the only one who is made /uncomfortable/ by the way that razor clams burrow into sand, right? The final moments of this video by Kate Crump on the Oregon coastline are sort of the crowning glory of horror. 😬 But how does this even work? Let's talk about bivalve mobility (if we must).

Ok here it is - out of 44 FDA approvals this year, 31 are small molecules (70%), 26 of those are oral drugs (84%), 22 of them are chiral (71%). This is the largest number and percentage of chiral FDA approved molecules in a single year. Fitusiran is not a small molecule, bonus.

On Dec. 6, 1917 at 8:45 a.m., the Imo and Mont-Blanc (which was packed with explosives) collided in Halifax Harbour. At 9:05 a.m., the Mont-Blanc exploded. The 2.9 kiloton blast levelled most of Halifax, killed 1,700 and injured 9,000. This is the story. 📸 LAC 🧵 1/12

It’s England so I appreciate how not everyone ‘gets it’ - but somehow my kid ended up with a moul piece of garlic and another got a brussel sprout from the same house. I suggested that they might not understand the full implications of ‘trick or treat‘ …

Every Halloween, one of the houses in our neighborhood offers kids the choice of a variety of full-size candies or, as a joke, a piece of fruit. Naturally, my youngest ended up with an orange in their bag tonight.
