Nauseating to see how the media, cyberinfluencers and other mass manipulators are milking the « story » for all it’s worth to grab some exposure surfing on Ed Sheeran’s fame. Listen to music for a bit instead.

If this looks familiar, it’s because it is a repost of a tweet I posted five years ago bc yes, I am still thinking about it. Here’s the rest of the thread:

Thinking about how a girl at Christian summer camp asked me if my dad was in Al Qaeda and I got in trouble for asking if her dad was a Klansman bc “her question was understandable”

And my family had it easy! We aren’t Muslim so no visible indicators like a hijab. I look white as hell. My brother can pass as something else. We both have our dad’s family nose, but that’s not noticeable to the average American. And despite all that, it still sucked.

Shoutout to my mom for always making sure my brother and I knew about our background and had a connection with our family even when the culture barrier made it hard btw. She’s the realest and I love her and so does everyone who has ever met her.

This is so real. The shit people would say to my white mother was so heinous that she cut off multiple friendships within days of the attacks. A lot of people asking if my dad knew the hijackers or about The Plan. Oh, and my mom thought he’d died in the towers while being asked all of this.

I'm a white Arab American. Most ppl would never know that's my background by looking at me. The day after 9/11, family friends, who did not know, where at the house and openly talking about how all Arabs and Muslims in the US should be rounded up into camps. I was 12 years old. We were never united.

You can tell this is true because when Michelle Obama made healthy eating and exercise her issue as First Lady, this same movement failed to coalesce around her and in fact she met a ton of resistance from the same people who made RFK Jr possible

One of the best investments we could make *right now* would be to nationalize all public utility companies; electric, water, even internet, etc. Pay them fair market value or whatever, but privately owned utility companies simply should not exist. And they’re fighting us on everything. Fuck ‘em

Senator Scott Wiener@scottwiener.bsky.social

PG&E demanded it not be liable for causing wildfires. The Legislature did not agree. PG&E’s response: Punishment by extending already ridiculous timelines to hook up new housing and clean energy to the grid. It’s straight up extortion. 🧵

I think I would really like the foldable iPhone. But at over $2k, I can’t justify blowing that much money on a phone. It would be a crazy business expense when I could put that money back into Micro.blog hosting or paying people. Other folks may have different priorities, and that’s fine! 💰

So, several months ago, when it became clear that the Anthropic settlement was designed to slice up payouts between the author and the publisher, I sent an email to them via my editor that, as the sole copyright owner of the works in question, I expected them to forward any payment they get to me.

We can tell. And we don’t tune out because we could tell. We could tell because we tuned out.

What’s the problem w using LLMs to write stuff you want other people to read -emails, articles, posts- and why are people (like me!) so incredibly hostile that they will block you/mute you/block your domain, to never read anything from you again? Bryan spells it out. Read it:

Darline Graham said that because her own parents died when she was a kid, people today shouldn't expect "government health care." So I dug up the real story of the death of Darline/Lindsey's parents. It makes a strong case FOR government health care. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2148...
