Personal news: my time at IRPP has come to an end after wrapping-up the multi-year industrial policy initiative. IRPP has begun a very timely trade diversification initiative that I'm excited to watch. But, fundamentally, I'm a housing and infrastructure guy. And those debates are going backwards.

These guys are such cowards. Jesus. Parts of DC *were* bad in the 90s. Now, if you're afraid of walking around, you are the problem.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump on DC: "Nobody wanted to eat out. They were afraid. Even if you were in the restaurant, people would walk in and like the Wild West, 'Hold it up!' Everybody is standing there. Can you imagine? A fancy restaurant. They were robbing the whole restaurant. It's crazy."

It's gotta be strange being a doughy bearded guy in an administration where everyone else is getting jacked on growth hormones and admiring each other's asses and making fun of dudes with beards.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance: "We're self-confident men in the Trump/Vance administration. The president has been noticing a lot about the physiques of everybody lately"

Pete Hegseth and rfk jr walk into the White House. R: *whispers* hey, it's that low-T loser Vance. *giggles* P: hey, JD. You got tickets? JD: tickets? P: tickets to the GUN SHOW!!! *all but JD laugh* P: take it easy, ya beardo. DJT: it's ok, JD. You're still my successor. *all but JD laugh*

Wait, are things actually going to be fine????

โ€œ.. a stunning comeback, sealed late as voters in Lulaโ€™s northeastern stronghold rallied behind one of Latin Americaโ€™s most prominent opponents of Trumpism.โ€ @bloomberg.com ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

If you're reading this and thinking, Lula sucks, actually...I probably agree? But we need to be less choosy about our friends in an increasingly unstable world. If a country is a functioning democracy and relatively aligned with us on foreign policy, good enough.

My one condition for closer cooperation with Europe is that they provide us with a steady stream of Club Mate. Also, that they don't go fascist. So two conditions.

The world is full of countries that are either flirting with authoritarianism, or trying to get out from under it. Wish we'd learn from the latter.

There's an interesting symmetry to the fact that Doug Ford and Tim Houston had the most enduring provincial level housing reforms in Canada. They were first, not necessarily enthusiastic, yet have locked in gains. Urbaniste have some soul searching to do.

Provincial level housing reform was basically a couple moderate conservative premiers saying, ok, fine, and one progressive government trying and failing to go further.

I hate the fact that I am watching a conversation with Nate Silver and knew the gap between Texas Democratic Senate and Gubernatorial polling before he said it. I should not know or care about these minutia! I shouldn't feel compelled to care about which party controls US Congress. And, yet...

You guys just need to fix this shit. It shouldn't matter that much if red or blue team wins. Good governance isn't strongly ideological. Having two ok options that don't want to burn down the country or smite your allies would be great. Please get back there.

Nothing says โ€œaspiring authoritarianโ€ quite like the regime posting a sign inside Independence Hall enlisting the public to report any deviations from an official propaganda version of history.

Connor Hellebuyck did the Jets a favour. He's 34 years old, and goalies are voodoo (including him - see his playoff record). Jets get two game ready centers (top current need) and a potential future 1 center (top future need) along with a serviceable young goalie and a second round pick. Nice work!

Command and Bjork (12 and 5 picks in 2026) potentially sets the Jets up at center for a good long time. Obviously hard to project with certainty, but with two guys of that pedigree, very plausible that's their 1/2 in a few years.

Another casual five point night for Connor McDavid (and Leon Draisaitl). Only ten games in, but worth noting he's on pace to smash the NHL's single season point record. I am absolutely here for that.

Slow 2-2 game halfway through. Canes score 2 to end second. Oilers tie it up. Canes take the lead with 2 mins left. Oilers pull goalie and score immediately. Called back. Oilers score again three seconds later. Tie game with a minute left.

This is one of the necessary fictions required for re-entrance as member in good standing of the free world.

This is what winning looks like. Eventually, the stigma will get so big that it will be like Germany in the 1950s where everyone's dad "was forced into the army and just had some support role."

Joking aside, I guess you could say I was doing an election interference when I started a F*CK Kate Murray chance at the last home game at Nassau Coliseum (before the short lived return). So I guess you could say I interfered in Nassau County politics. ๐Ÿ˜… thehockeynews.com/news/news/ho...

I'm sorry - aside from the fact that his hair seemed well groomed and who the hell cares if he's hot or not - is there actually a stereotype about Democrats not bathing?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

wow -- a protester right behind Vance spikes his MAGA hat and start yelling at Vance before getting hauled out. Vance smears him for allegedly looking like he hasn't washed his hair.

Listening to Jon Ossoff debate is like going to therapy for my soul. Related: I am not prepared for the results of the midterms. Decency is on the ballot. The part of me that has visited 43 states feels like it will win. The part of me that remembers the 2016 and 2024 elections isn't sure.

It's October 20th. People are still popping into group chats to complain how hot their units are. Really need to fix the indoor. Heating bylaws. Gotta back it up to at least second week of October.

Money in politics can be a problem, sure. But if you think you're going to scare me off of a candidate because the people trying to build housing think he's good for housing, you're at the wrong door.

I'm pre-nostalgic for the 504 Distillery, which is going to be out of commission from November to August. Yes, yes. I can walk up to Front to get the 504 Broadview, but it's annoying as hell. It's like if the city decided drivers have to walk a half kilometer to get in their cars.

Been awhile since the last time I stayed up to watch referendum results. I'm not going to do the math, because I don't want to think about how long ago 1995 was.

Ten questions, all counted by hand. Not all polls necessarily closed yet. First Nations communities didn't receive enough ballots. Counting is going to take days, isn't it?

You know, I think he actually might believe this. If you spend all your time among the wealthiest tranche of the population, they may be annoyed by inflation, but their 401Ks are doing great and their home prices are up. So they're flush with cash to travel. They're pretty price insensitive.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Hassett: "If economic polls were correct, then people wouldn't be taking trips to nice hotels, they wouldn't be flying, they wouldn't be buying cars, they wouldn't be doing all the things they do when they're feeling good about the economy... people are acting like we're in a boom. We are in a boom"

Seriously. Want to experience an alternate reality? Spend a bunch of time in airport lounges. The conversations you overhear are just wild sometimes. Global elites (aka populist conservatives) live in a totally different universe than the typical voter. The economy is absolutely working for them.

I had such unrelenting faith in the American people until 2015. I'll never feel that way again, but I really hope you can at least give the rest of the world a reason to not fear the American electorate on November 3rd. We're not asking for much, guys!
