Watch Stone Center Senior Scholar @pkrugman.bsky.social's James Martin Memorial Lecture, presented at @ox.ac.uk's Oxford Martin School. Krugman explores the global economic landscape, challenging assumptions about Europe's performance and its position relative to the world's other major economies.
How are productivity gains distributed among workers at a firm? A new WP shows how permanent productivity gains pass through to wages at each level of the hierarchy, from low-qualified workers to managers, and whether this pass-through has evolved over time.
The paper was coauthored by Marta Fana and GC Wealth Project team members Luca Giangregorio and Matteo Targa, and is part of the Stone Center Working Paper Series:
The trigger for this political reaction was the global financial crisis and Great Recession of 2008β9, which highlighted how the benefits of globalization in advanced economies accrued more to capital than labor and more to the wealthy than the working classes.
Thanks to Nuffield team for granting me time to tell the story of @lisdata.bsky.social role in #inequality data/research.
"I think itβs fair to say that, if it happened at LIS, I either saw it or I know about it. So thatβs the basis of the story that Iβm going to tell today."

Using variation across the 50 U.S. states, results reveal a clear, negative effect of millionaire wealth concentration on democratic performance.

Impressive event yesterday - building support, brick by brick, for the International Panel on Inequality (IPI). The discussions were smart, sober, and at times even hopeful. Grateful to be part of the growing body of supporters.

Thank you @noamscheiber.bsky.social for such a thoughtfully reported @nytimes.com piece about our Class Gap research.
Key point: the class gap is NOT an academia specific phenomenon. The cultural & social capital that come from class background matter in many elite settings.
"If youβre a white working-class guy in an elite profession, youβre also facing pretty serious barriers.β Some very persuasive evidence that the "class ceiling" is a huge problem for white-collar workers. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/18/b...

An important note of caution for younger researchers. Digitalization or AI is not a panacea. In my lifetime I have seen dozens, if not hundreds, of surveys and datasets that have been lost. They disappeared because of incompatibility between different operating systems.

Why does wealth poverty matter? How is it measured? How prevalent is it? What factors raise households' risk of being wealth poor? What policies can mitigate it? A new WP by @schechtlm.eurosky.social & @janetgornick.bsky.social, prepared for the Annual Review of Sociology, addresses those questions.

Y Berman & E Klor show that temporary tax holidays may generate substantial short-run revenues but also encourage taxpayers to postpone future distributions if they expect similar relief again. Policymakers should consider how policy shapes tomorrow's expectations.
