My dear friend @miguelherdade.bsky.social just published this beautiful book about social mobility and education. It's only in Portuguese, and is essentially an immediate bestseller in Portugal, so if you can read the language - buy a copy and read it!

Happy to see our paper on dividend tax reforms out in Fiscal Studies (@theifs.bsky.social)! On a conceptual note, dividend tax is unusual among widely used taxes: it falls heavily on the top 1% (and barely at all on the bottom 90%), while still having the potential to raise substantial revenue 1/2

Y Berman & E Klor show that temporary tax holidays may generate substantial short-run revenues but also encourage taxpayers to postpone future distributions if they expect similar relief again. Policymakers should consider how policy shapes tomorrow's expectations. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
So we should think carefully about how dividend taxes are designed and reformed. Our paper looks at exactly these questions. Link to full paper (open access): doi.org/10.1111/1475... 2/2

Tax Day reminder: taxing the super-rich a few percent of their wealth shouldn't be controversial - a billionaire tax wouldn't start from zero. See post below 👇 Also worth reading from @gabrielzucman.bsky.social, @josephestiglitz.bsky.social, and @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social: tinyurl.com/3r8sy73r
Two points missing in recent Wealth Tax debates: - If we measure total taxes as a % of wealth (not income), the system is highly regressive - The wealthiest pay 3%-4% of their wealth annually in taxes. Wealth Tax shouldn't be seen as starting from zero (see US data from @gabrielzucman.bsky.social)
