@rachelgilmore.bsky.social On your rec I read To Catch a Fascist. I found the book interesting. I found the ethics of the fascist-catchers, though, questionable. Also, the scale of the problem is understated. It seems there are way more fascists than fascist-catchers. Thanks for the rec.

For somebody who is supposedly a genius at using leverage, it’s surprising that Trump doesn’t recognize that decarbonizing the economy eliminates Iran’s leverage, ie as a gatekeeper for crude.

@anneapplebaum.bsky.social Anne, in Autocracy, Inc. You argued that Venezuela helped other autocracies evade international law. Is there evidence that the abduction of Maduro and US interdiction of oil tankers has actually stopped Venezuela from sabotaging international sanctions?

Is it a fair suggestion that under slightly different circumstances Trump might have asked the US Air Force to fire a Sidewinder up Epstein’s derriére while cruising in his private jet over the Caribbean?

@anneapplebaum.bsky.social At some point Donald Trump will pass from the scene. How likely is it that America will experience its own “Khrushchev moment” or will America continue down this path of xenophobia, white nationalism, and the brotocracy of the ultra rich for some time to come?

DOGE layoffs pin Texas deaths directly on Trump program to downsize Federal “bureaucracy”

News Eye@newseye.bsky.social

25 dead so far across Texas from flooding. Local authorities are blaming poor forecasting. It’s all so tragically predictable and criminally negligent.

With his war on trans-Pacific trade Donald Trump may ironically go down as the greatest pro-environment president in history as the ocean-going freighters fall silent and Christmas presents rot on the piers of Shenzhen.

Also, one of the largest uses of glitter is in boat paint.

Glitter threatens marine life by interfering with the formation of shells and skeletons, thereby affecting the survival and reproduction of these organisms. 🌊

Two thematically related skeets here: one, great detective work by Bellingcat exposing an egregious AI forgery NCII peddler. The scumbag behind the site coincidentally shut it down last week… 🤔

“There’s a clear factor dividing which countries are seeing faster EV adoption and which are going slower: openness to Chinese carmakers.” Canada needs to rethink its approach to Chinese autos. It should begin lowering tariffs, dependent on Chinese automakers opening factories in Canada.

Trump replaced the physical bribery palace of the Trump hotel with a virtual one and it’s doing orders of magnitude more business.

NEW: A fund backed by Abu Dhabi will be making a $2 BILLION business deal using cryptocurrency from the Trump family's venture, World Liberty Financial, according to Zach Witkoff. That transaction would be a major contribution by a foreign government to President Trump’s private venture.

These cases will never survive federal courts overseen by federal judges...which means at some point I'm pretty sure they're going to resort to military tribunals or kangaroo courts in soccer stadiums

Today Canadians will unite in a retail blackout of American goods as our protest against unilateral tariffs on Canadian goods scheduled to come into effect March 4. We negotiated changes to the US, Mexico, Canada Trade Agreement in good faith just a few years ago. This is no way to treat a friend.
