New episode of AAUP Presents podcast is out!
We discuss the AAUP report, “Extorted Compliance: A Threat to Institutional Autonomy, Academic Freedom, & Shared Governance,” which exposes how the Trump admin has extended its pay-to-play approach to governance into higher education.

I am consistently vexed by the fact that elite consensus is more interested in holding US colleges and universities accountable for things that they have a little control over - white color wages, rent in Santa Barbara - than things they can influence - campus safety, instructional approach.
Thanks so much to student journalist Brendan Fijol, who allowed what was supposed to be a fluff piece on a new faculty book to instead highlight the catastrophic state of academic labor at GU & beyond, and the coordinated attacks on thought since 2020. +

The plain fact of it is thus: the Trump administration wants to re-segregate higher education. It is a racist project straight-up-no-chaser. Accommodating any of this puts you on the wrong side of history, makes you a collaborator in this project. ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...
Student debt dampens the positive economic effects of #highered. Among college grads, Black women are the group most likely to hold student debt. This debt constrains their ability to build wealth. #UncertainPathwaybit.ly/39mn6ye#Debt#EconSky
The right-wing trick - what it did with most previous govt services (cut, privatize, complain about result) - now in public higher ed.
Fight w budget action.
Follow the money, demand change over the money $$$.
Cuts are not the solution to the problem. Cuts are the problem. Stop accepting less.
The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased.

I’m so glad @sunyofficial.bsky.social is a founding member of this initiative and has been acting on its underlying principles for years. I appreciate @sunychancellor.bsky.social John King’s vision, leadership, and untiring efforts to advance student success across SUNY. This, too, is #MADC
“The people who scream the loudest that there is no value in higher education all have a college degree, and their children are all enrolled in college,” says Chuck Welch in @insidehighered.com’s coverage of the National Student Success Project.

I’m working toward even greater alignment between higher ed union, governance, administration, and board perspectives on AI for the Public Good in SUNY. We have an opportunity to lead the nation. We need to seize it.
If you are interested in getting involved in the joint FCCC/UFS AI Collaborative, contact your campus governance leader before November 16.

Congratulations to the 14th President of SUNY Geneseo, Melinda Treadwell! @sunygeneseo.bsky.social what an amazing, moving, joyful day! Thank you for having me, and best wishes for a long and successful tenure to Pres. Treadwell! (Don’t mind me, heading off to dry my eyes before hitting the road.)
We're having an in-person launch for the new book at the University of Mississippi today! @marcwatkins.bsky.social and I will be there on site, and @anetv.bsky.social will join us virtually. If you're in Oxford, come join us at 2:30pm Central at the Johnson Commons!
“International students, full-time faculty and part-time faculty in particular—we were all feeling very vulnerable,” said Hank Kalet, a journalism lecturer and vice president of the adjunct faculty union. “So these protections became a central focus for a lot of our members.”

"The current debate about the value of college is important, as it challenges us to check our assumptions about the college-for-all movement."—CEW's Jeff Strohl talks about the challenges facing postsecondary education. More here: bit.ly/47ymvEg#College#AcademicSky
It’s striking how much of the higher ed organizing on the political Right is focused on the epistemic content of teaching and scholarship - and how there is basically not much of a response to that from either scholarly associations or the political Left.
Likely the most important thing I've ever written — if you're an academic and the AI mania unsettles you, here's my best shot at presenting some intellectual tools that might help you articulate why.

This week, NIH advisors rebuked RFK for harming #NIH and US science. Sheryl Gay Stolberg reported it.
Then RFK posted calling her sources anonymous or corrupt.
I'll say this hoping it does good:
I'm an NIH scientist, I'm not anonymous, and RFK Jr is destroying NIH.

“Let’s mess with Texas” was the working title of this Executive committee statement for the longest time. More power to everyone doing just that!

The director of FEMA is not allowed to do this legally. The director of OMB is not allowed to do this legally. The President of the United States is not allowed to do this legally. They're a gang of criminals, and should suffer the consequences.
FEMA tells states: We're incompetent, hopelessly politicized, unable and willing to fulfill our statutory responsibilities. The take care clause of the constitution no longer exists.

I’m going to be talking tomorrow with folks in system about potential breach of contract by CircleIn. So many people put so much effort into getting “AI for the public good” right. This is not the way. There need to be clear consequences whenever corporations ignore established guardrails.
"Since SUNY Geneseo is covering the cost" - which means public money is becoming revenue for yet another ed tech company rather than, say, being spent on hiring human faculty. The university is many things, but perhaps most importantly it is a revenue stream for corporate America.
If Bhattacharya is now suddenly on the chopping block for saying no to Vought last month, that would imply Bhattacharya did not say no to Vought before — while Vought was tearing down NIH from 2025 until last month.
“But allies of Jay Bhattacharya, the head of the NIH, fear he could be on the chopping block after his clash with WH Budget Director Russell Vought in the Oval Office last month over political control of the NIH's multibillion-dollar grant process.”
but that would be government censorship?!
Not to claim New York exceptionalism bc we are by no means perfect, but we have enjoyed historic investments in SUNY and CUNY over the last few budget cycles, SUNY is offering its own civic education/discourse/engagement projects, and our governance bodies are leaders in advancing academic freedom &

Where we have the most room to improve is in the areas @cnewf.bsky.social@asheeshks.org and many other have been calling for: investments specifically in the humanities (and arts and social sciences). Here’s where I’m most optimistic, though, and it’s bc of AI!

…shared governance.
Given decades of attacks on “tenured radicals” and “political correctness” and “liberal bias” have been crucial to undermining public trust in higher education, maybe it’s a smart strategy not to add fuel to that fire?

Maybe universities shouldn‘t be tying which departments and programs they decide to invest in based on projected job trends they have no actual clue about. Why not just invest proportionally in every field of inquiry rather than underfund some disciplines and overfund others?
If you’re in STEM and you’re eligible to vote in the midterms…YOU BETTER BE VOTING. I want “I VOTED” sticker selfies in the comments.
