Reminded of a guy in my Chinese class in first year who had a double-double-barrelled surname – ie, his mum had taken his father's name and kept her own, and he had his dad's surname and his mum's full surname, so he was like Brian Williams Johnson-Williams.

Flashback to the time I got laoban 老板 and laogong 老公 mixed up and told my classmate that I am so tired at the moment because I have three or four husbands to keep happy.

Nonsensical policy is unsurprising but nonsensical. They know they're not going to be in government, so their policies don't have to be realistic, but they should at least make sense and be internally consistent.

"We're going to cut tax and increase public spending and we're going to pay for it by increasing tax in gas exports, which we are also going to phase out". Just utter nonsense that belongs on the side of a bus.

Weihai is an old city with a long history; however, because it has been a military target for literally everyone who has ever had beef with China, including China, there's not much of the history left. Huancui Pavilion was completely destroyed by Japan in 1944 and has been rebuilt since.

Hello from Weihai. The sun is shining and the sky is blue, but it's chilly and there's a cool breeze. I have been glasses 👓 shopping and we are meeting a friend for dinner later.

Weihai, population 3 million. We walked into the optometrist and the guy said "ah, the foreigner! We remember you from last year. We have your prescription!"

You can tell when people are not interested in addressing problem gambling and harm associated with problem gambling and instead just want to ban all gambling, because they present all gambling as problem gambling, as is done here.

I learned recently that $24 million is lost to the gambling industry per day in NSW alone. That's $1 million per hour taken from vulnerable people who can't afford to lose that.

$1m per hour is not "taken from vulnerable people who can't afford to lose that". The majority of people who gamble *can* afford to lose what they bet. And most voluntarily gamble – even those who are addicted are not so addicted that they have zero agency.

Problem gambling affects only a subset of people who gamble, and those people really need help. Targeted help. Focussed help. And that's hard. Not your stupid "ban the pokies, job done, walk away" nonsense. Why don't you help instead of getting in the way of people who are helping?

There are people in the gambling industry and adjacent to the gambling industry who are working very hard to address problem gambling and gambling harm, and the anti-gambling people are constantly obstructing and derailing that work.

a weird set of people who only exist online are people who celebrate the defeat of global fascism in every other country and are then horrified and appalled at the idea that they should also be expected to vote for their domestic opponent of global fascism if some of their stances are Problematic

I feel a bit of sad nostalgia about this because in my previous incarnation, I worked at the Spring Ball at Victoria Barracks every year and it was, well actually never much fun, but the people were, well actually quite unpleasant.

I have been thinking about the tofu stew today because it was so good. It was made with chicken skin that managed to stay crispy in the stew. We've been to this restaurant three times in three days, it's so good.

There were also other dishes, but the potatoes were 👨‍🍳😘👌

Australians get so excited about crap food, and I don't understand it. Shapes really are crap, but Australians see them as part of their cultural identity. Fkn weirdos.

Your country might be great but does it follow Australia’s lead by colour-coordinating its currency with the nation’s favourite snack foods?

I do understand why people are very protective of their languages and why they get upset when words from their languages are borrowed into other languages and then used in different ways. However, this process happens all the time in all languages.

Most of the people who bleat "artists should be paid for their work" as a defence of copyright maximalism are horrified by any suggestion of models that involve artists actually being paid for the work that they do rather than collecting cash for owning the IP they produce as an asset.

Replying to @johnb78.bsky.social

Taking the copyright maximalist position on "IP" law is a reactionary, anti-humanist, and objectively harmful approach compared to supporting the free diffusion of ideas

John Avocado 宇杰 reposted

There is no such thing as 'intellectual property theft", because theft definitionally involves the permanent intention to deprive, whereas the free diffusion of ideas makes society better off at zero cost to the original possessor of the idea.

Elrond tells the long story of the One Ring, from its forging in the Mountain of Fire, to its betrayal of Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Frodo is startled to learn that Elrond himself marched with Gil-Galad in the Last Alliance against Sauron, more than three thousand years ago.

I got tempted by Jay Chou, who is not only the most attractive man in the world and my favourite Mandopop star, but also the brand ambassador for Starbucks in China, and I ordered the EXPENSIVE sea salt caramel cheese latte made with real mascarpone.
