Anyway I encountered, to my astonishment, a NEW wacko anti-mask argument on FB today!! It is this: 1) I believe that you haven't been sick since 2021, BUT 2) it's not because you mask consistently, because 3) Masks don't work against viruses, ergo 4) YOU HAVE CHANGED SOMETHING ELSE W/O REALIZING IT

btw this occurred in the comments on a post about ME/CFS and masking on planes, which came across my dash because I am active in various COVID-aware spaces but which can only have come across This Guy's dash because he has been rage-engaging with similar content. I wish I loved anything as much >>

(Spoiler alert: No I haven't) But this one does have the virtue of novelty (at least to me), so I humoured him by listing all the ways I'm back to pre-COVID normal + all the ways I'm not: (1) I rarely eat indoors in restaurants, (2) mask.

His response: Nope! Not possible. Masks don't work against viruses, so it can't be the masks. you just don't know what else you changed, but whatever it is, that's why you aren't getting sick. ... so I blocked him, which I should've done immediately.

I can't believe I have to watch the Toronto election results roll in with NO ICE CREAM IN THE HOUSE. Epic fail by past!Sylvia, who was literally at Metro buying groceries YESTERDAY.

And like, obviously the things you can do as an individual are the things that have the smallest impact overall, BUT I will note that I have had COVID only once (early Omicron wave, Dec 2021), thanks to being that pedantic weirdo who has worn a 3M Aura in indoor public spaces ever since.

People who know me have mostly come to accept this as just another Weird Sylvia Thing, but when someone does ask me why I'm "still wearing a mask", I cheerfully tell them 🤷‍♀️ I just really enjoy not getting sick 🤷‍♀️ and move the conversation on. Maybe it sparks a thought sometimes but I'm too tired.

... testing, mandate & subsidize clean indoor air. We can have real precautions and mitigations! We know how this virus works! OUR PLAN DOES NOT HAVE TO BE AN UNDERPANTS GNOMES PLAN. That's a policy choice.

I did not know we were having a debate, but since we apparently are: THERE IS NO DEBATE, WTF, DO NOT

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

$30k is 2+ years of our mortgage payments, 2+ years of condo fees, or 1+ years of both. It’s 90% of my kid’s undergraduate tuition (4-yr BA) or 3 years of her current rent (she has a flatmate). It’s dozens of trips to visit my parents 3000km away. Seems life-changing to me.

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

I don't think $30k is a life-changing amount of money. Median American born in 1980 will have $2m in income in their lifetime. It's a 1% increase in earnings.

THIS. Exactly, specifically this. The time I would save if I didn't have to say "Nope, piss off" to an offer of AI "assistance" fifty times a day ... !

The exact personalization I want for my software is for it to not contain AI.

Switching from Chrome w/ Google search to Vivaldi and/or Safari w/ DuckDuckGo search (all AI options switched off at the source) has helped significantly. But it's literally everywhere else 😵‍💫

Once again I am begging conservatives to understand (or even just recognize) the difference between censorship and people disagreeing with your uninformed takes. Freedom of expression =/= freedom from mockery, my dudes

"You can't even talk about--" Yes you can. (Unless it's hate speech.) You're talking about it right now. You just can't talk about it without someone telling you you're misinformed and/or lying.

The 1978 animated film version of WATERSHIP DOWN, when I was 5. My mom was unfamiliar with the source material; all she knew was that it was about rabbits. I was terrified by the middle and devastated by the end, and insisted on a light on in my bedroom for YEARS afterwards.

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

While walking the dog this morning I saw 2 Ford F-150s. One was oooold; it had a 2-seat cab and a bed long enough for lumber. The other was new, much taller, with a 4-seat cab and a bed literally half the size of the older pickup. That is not a truck for a person who actually needs a truck!

Props to past!Sylvia, who booked a vacation day for today. She couldn't have known current!Sylvia would have a funeral AND a parent in the hospital yesterday, but boy howdy a day on the couch with a cozy poodle absolutely hits the spot right now. (The parent says he is "feeling much better" today.)

Someone on instagram just made fun of me for not knowing what it means to have red paint on the bottom of your shoes. (Context: Hudson Williams interview at TIFF.) Look it up, they said. You’ll understand why everyone was so excited. I looked it up. If anything, I now understand less than before 🤣

Update: Someone told me to “just say [I] know nothing about fashion” (true! Top marks!) and someone else told ne to “just say [I’m] a miserable kvnt [sic] and move on” (a little harsh, but full marks for creative spelling). The way a comments section can read “it’s weird to cheer the shoes” as >>

Once upon a time, Telehealth Ontario was great—you could call, wait a little, talk to an RN and get guidance for how to deal with your thing at home or advice to see your family doctor soon or go to Emerg immediately. Now we have this Doug Ford thing called 811, and it is … well. 1/n

Telehealth used to be part of how people decided when to go to Emerg. If this is “system” is what we have now, folks must be showing up in Emerg just in case all the time. We almost did! Also feel terrible for the (too few) nurses working 811, who must get so many angry, frustrated ppl. 7/8

Diagnosis: cellulitis. Redness up arms already receding, doctor approved of using Sharpie lines to monitor. Spouse couldn’t remember last tetanus shot so he got one, and we left with a scrip for antibiotics. Stopped at pharmacy and bakery (for bagels) on the way home. Debriefed Offspring then 6/n

sent her back to bed. Spouse has already taken first dose of abx. A 811 nurse called me at 14:02. SEVENTEEN HOURS after I called 811. It is not her fault and she was very nice and I was very nice to her back (briefly explained outcome so she could log it and move on) but HOLY SHIT WTF DOUG. 7/n

decided to let him sleep. She took the night shift, with my phone’s ringer on for when the nurse called back, and I got some sleep. I woke up around 07:00 and checked in; the nurse had not called back but Offspring had found a nearby walk-in clinic opening at 10:00. She woke me again at 08:30 4/n

and gave me the handoff report: 30-min temp checks from 01:22 onwards, and narrative reports on interactions during the night. Still no phone call. She went to bed, I woke up Spouse, and we set off to the clinic. Got there at 09:50, were third or fourth in line, talking to nurse by 10:50 5/n

I called them last night around 21:00 to ask for advice on what Offspring and I were pretty sure was an infected cut on Spouse’s finger. Spoke to a very nice person who said they had no medical training and couldn’t give us advice but would we like a callback from a nurse? In about 7 hours? 2/n

7 hours is a very long time but sure, yes please. Meanwhile I drew a Sharpie outline of the red areas on Spouse’s hand and arm, gave him some Tylenol and Gatorade, and started logging temperature checks. Offspring got home from a concert after midnight and we agonized about calling 911 but 3/n

It's right there in the Four Questions: On all other nights we eat either chametz [leavened bread] or matzah [unleavened bread], why on this night do we only eat matzah? It may TASTE like cardboard, but IT'S BREAD.

Sen. Pumpkin Gogurt@ugarles.bsky.social

ftr matzah is bread. it is not *leavened* bread. also, there is a matzah-breaking ritual during the seder so even though el-sayed meant it metaphorically it is also literally true. this isn't a lie meant for jews, it's to get goyim to falsely think el-sayed was being antisemitic or insensitive.
