Thirty years ago I was on a high-volume high-aggro mailing list, and when someone lost it like this the tradition was for someone to take the text of the message, alphabetize it, paste it into a reply, and say “these words didn’t appear to be in any particular order so I alphabetized them for you”

one useful thing about JD Vance is that he proves there’s no “going back to normal” after Trump. Vance is the future of the GOP and that future is a party that revels in being Truly Fucking Awful. the whole shtick is just being A Really Bad Guy and then going “oh are you triggered by how Bad I am?”

We are all seeing how just a few months of outsourcing your thinking to AI can wreck your brain. The wealthiest people have outsourced everything to the people around them for YEARS.

We've lived for so long with this mythology that sure, the wealthy can be cruel. But at least the cruelty has a point. Profit! I'd like us to open our hearts to other possibilities. Power doesn't just corrupt! It can also breed truly reality-distorting levels of incompetence.

Really perfect economic combo where interest rates are increasing fast enough that homeowners are facing declining home values *and* homebuyers are facing increasing monthly payments. Just pure pain for everyone involved in buying or selling a home right now.

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

PARCL LABS: “.. 43.3% of all US homes for sale are now undergoing price cuts. This is up 93 basis points since Wednesday. This is up 20% since April.”

I'm thinking that this is a big part of how we lost our way as a society. First we had virtues, which were about being a good human being. And then we divided the virtues into "masculine" and "feminine" based on their overlap with masculine and feminine roles as practiced in our place and time.

The Specifics Hardly Matter@gbaji.bsky.social

I have never heard of a "masculine" virtue (or a "feminine" virtue) that couldn't be more honestly described as "being a responsible adult." It's the exclusivity that makes "masculinity" toxic.

There was no reason we had to do that, but it didn't hurt, much… Until we decided that part of the performance of masculinity or femininity was to signal one's lack of the opposite gendered virtues. I think that the pervasive vice signaling in our society today probably comes from this root.

"Fuck your feelings" and "mass deportations now" are of a piece with "men shouldn't have to cook or clean or even tie a necktie" and "women should just buy a new car rather than try to fix it or even take it to the shop." Maybe everything is gender; maybe not but we'll treat it like gender anyway.

Saying he'd be cool with Iran nuking my home city is pretty bad but not quite as bad as when Hillary said some trump supporters were deplorable so I can see why the media turned the latter into a major scandal and not the former

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."

Important: the USPS rule that SCOTUS blocked tonight was Trump’s big plan to control and restrict mail voting. But a separate policy remains in place: USPS is no longer postmarking mail as soon it gets it, which is hugely important for deadlines. So people must mail back with plenty of time.

boltsmag.orgIn an Intense Election Year, New Post Office Rules Could Trip Up Voter Registration - BoltsA change in how mail is postmarked could lead some voters to miss key deadlines, including voter registration. Advocates worry the people most affected will be those already facing voting barriers.

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

There is a point at which the sheer volume of lying becomes self-reinforcing. Maybe you can get through to people with a fact-check on a couple specific points. If you have to explain that virtually everything they “know” on a topic is a lie, you end up sounding like the crazy one.

The overwhelming right wing sentiment is that COVID was an engineered bioweapon that was also harmless. Trump overreacted to it by shutting down the country, then engineered a drive to create a vaccine that was the real bioweapon that killed millions, and it's Joe Biden's fault.
