Electricity is 23% of global final energy but delivers 37% of useful energy and powers 46% of the global economy. We don't need to replace every fossil joule. We need to replace the services. A much smaller task. Great to see the @iea.org’s new Electrification report finally measure this.

The evil AI copied itself onto the internet! No stoping it now! That's just Skynet or Ultron. Those stories rely on magic, and the audience suspends disbelief because the plot is cool. Makes no sense for AI that needs giant datacenters or live connections to them. Can we deal with reality, please?

OUT TODAY: The take-off in African solar that official statistics can’t yet see 2026 is on track for +45% in solar installations, setting new records in 36 countries. New methodology reveals 3/4 of growth is distributed solar, much of which is missing from official data..🧵

Measuring energy usage in units of Primary Energy is like measuring nutrition in acres. People need food, not food waste or land inefficiently farmed. People need energy services not thermal waste or fossil fuels inefficiently extracted. Time to measure what matters. #PrimaryEnergyFallacy

The rise in Niño 3.4 region sea surface temperatures over the past few weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. We are now hotter than any days during the 1997/1998 super El Niño event, and we are still many months from the peak.

This is what I've been saying for years - there is much more cleantech manufacturing outside China, especially in Europe, Japan, Korea, than the narrative of China's "dominance" suggests.

Since the Middle East war began Europe's EV market has been accelerating sharply. Q1 2026 registrations hit 547,000 — up 32% on the same period last year. But the real story is March 2026 with almost 50% more than in March 2025. More in next newsletter sign up here janrosenow.substack.com

There are many stories for why oil price remains lower than any expert expected. None of them fully explain it. So let me add one more: capitalists are saying oil is not as important to global economy as energy experts think it is. Certainly not as important as it was in the 1970s or even 2000s.

This is a critical point: *today*, even in countries that don’t introduce policies & measures to support it, consumers can unilaterally enact electrification and demand destruction

Good morning with good news: Pakistan's solar skyrocketed from ~2% in 2019 to 32.3% in November 2025. Solar output rose ~14x to 36.6 TWh in 12/2025 from 2.6 TWh in 12/2019! 14x in 6 years! Solar jumped to 27.5% in 3/2025 from 15.3% in 3/2024. Twelve-point gain in 12 months. Wow! #energysky

A striking difference between the 2021-22 and the current fossil fuel crunches is the IEA's response. This time, not a mention of the actual solutions to cut dependence on fossil fuels - clean energy and electrification. This expert letter calls them out for it.

IEA: “Global oil demand is expected to fall by 80,000 barrels per day year-on-year in 2026, revised down from growth of 640,000 barrels per day seen in last month’s report. The pace of decline will subside in our base case forecast, after supplies chains start to normalize from May.”

France 🇫🇷 doubles electrification support to €10bn/year through 2030 — EVs, heat pumps, industry. The reason? The Strait of Hormuz crisis making fossil fuel dependence impossible to ignore. Geopolitical shocks don’t just raise prices. They change what’s politically possible.

Fossil fuel crises before the 2020s left consumers with three options: 1. Switch fuel if possible 2. Pay more if you can find fuel 3. Cut fuel use Fossil fuel crises after the 2020s give new affordable options: 4. Install cheap solar panels and batteries 5. Buy electricity-consuming devices

Excellent description of what to expect from the oil shock. Only the last stage is missing: price shock will lead to permanent and structural oil and gas demand destruction through clean energy, electrification and energy efficiency measures.
