Our latest work now on bioRxiv! We found evidence for multiple independent HGTs of the anti-parasitoid effector cdtB in drosophilids, including anciently in the last common ancestor of subgenus Drosophila 👀 You can browse our data here: trnpl.github.io/antiparasito...

Avocados come in 2 varieties - A-types start each day female and switch to male midday. B-types do the reverse. In work just published from the last chapter of my PhD, we show this system evolved 40+million yrs ago and is regulated by alleles of 1 transcription factor www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Very much looking forward to working on two of my favorite things (flies and toxins) in this next stage of my career. Happy to talk to interested folks either virtually or here at #Dros26!

Very honored to receive this award from GSA! I have immense gratitude for my advisor @nkwhiteman.bsky.social, labmates, collaborators, mentees, and the fly community, who in many ways potentiated my graduate research. Looking forward to sharing my work at my favorite meeting in my favorite city!

We’re excited to announce @tarnopol.bsky.social as the recipient of the 2026 Larry Sandler Award! 🎉 She’ll present the Larry Sandler Memorial Lecture during the #Dros26 opening session on March 4—she'll share how her research explores how protein toxins evolve to shape host–parasite interactions.

Did you know there are 2 types of avocado varieties? A-types switch from female to male, B-types male to female, within a single day. This reciprocal sex alternation promotes cross-pollination and has a simple genetic basis. Read more in this recent preprint from the final chapter of my PhD thesis 🥑

We currently have a call for support that has gone out to European labs, to support FlyBase-UK. We are asking our colleagues from labs in the US and other countries to wait for a similar call to them that will go out in the near future, to support the US sites. We thank you for your patience.

URGENT: FlyBase has lost practically all its funding overnight; even user fees are tied up in denied grant funding. 🤬🤯 Any lab using @flybase.bsky.social please donate using the link in post below. This incredible community, on whose backs our #Drosophila labs depend, can't be left out to dry.

Excited to be in sunny San Diego for my 5th (!) fly meeting #Dros25! I will be giving a poster (329T) tomorrow on some new host-parasitoid experiments — would love to chat with interested folks!

Excellent news about an excellent resource from our excellent collaborator!!

@bilderlab@bilderlab.bsky.social

#Drosophila community: Dr. Istvan Ando has generously donated his invaluable anti-hemocyte monoclonal Abs to the #NIH-founded public repository @dshb-antibodies.bsky.social in #Iowa. We’ve tested several of them and they look great. See the🧵 for details. (1/5)

Our study highlights how HGT can potentiate rapid evolution of adaptive traits in animals, given the right regulatory context. Lots more interesting biology described in the manuscript, and lots of new questions to follow up on next! (7/n)

Feeling very lucky that my out-there idea from the beginning of grad school worked out, and that I got to work with excellent collaborators here and abroad who made it all possible. Two wonderful undergraduate co-authors, Jossie Tamsil and Jaden (Ji Heon) Ha, were instrumental in this work. (8/fin)

We found that the FusionB toxin was secreted from the fat body to the host hemolymph, where it targetec the serosal tissue of parasitoids and led to increased wasp mortality by 72 hpi. To our knowledge, it is the first toxic humoral anti-parasitoid factor described in Drosophila. (5/n)

The tools in D. melanogaster let us dissect the role of gene regulation in mediating HGT in animals, an area not well-studied. When we expressed fusionB constitutively, instead of in the immune tissues where it is natively expressed in D. ananassae, we observed lethality at early pupal stages. (6/n)

Shockingly, one of these genes, a cdtB::aip56 fusion gene we called "fusionB," drove a robust parasitoid resistance phenotype in against two different parasitoid species when expressed in D. melanogaster immune tissues! (4/n)

Excited to share the major work of my dissertation, out now in @currentbiology.bsky.social! We use Drosophila genetics to dissect the evolution of phage-derived toxins that were horizontally transferred to insects and now function as potent anti-parasitoid defenses (1/n): tinyurl.com/2k9ypyxr

The two toxins—cytolethal distending toxin B (cdtB) and apoptosis inducing protein of 56kDa (aip56)—are implicated in a defensive endosymbiosis in aphids. Our lab found HGT of these genes to insects in multiple orders, where they function in anti-parasitoid defense (2/n): tinyurl.com/m9mufn9a
