Excited to announce the publication of my new book chapter on fly (Diptera) pollination! Here I compile nearly 250 published papers and summarize major aspects of myophily, including ecological, economic, and conservation significance. #pollination#Diptera#unsungheroesdoi.org/10.1016/B978...
Terellia has some serious antenna game! Why are they bristly, why not! Fascinating discovering at today's Picture Wing Fly course with @tanyptera.bsky.social#diptera#entomology
Happy Fly-day. We made it!

A post in honour of #FlyDay
This rather large horse fly (Tabanidae) was making the most of the sunshine and spring flowers last weekend.
These flies can be a bit of a challenge on warm days when out and about in the Aussie bush.

last upload for a little while before i start my last year of grad school (!) to become a therapist (!!!)
but iβve had this idea floating in my head for a while based on my favorite insect, the stalk eyed fly! goofiest bugs in the world <3

Flyday!
This is a Bee Fly
I know this because I am a fly expert
We experts call them "Diptera"
pretty much so the
laypeople don't know
what we're talking about

We'll be hosting our 35th General Meeting @ #EntSoc26 (Nov. 10; Columbus, OH) and are looking for speakers! Presentations can be on anything related to #Diptera
If you're interested please message @bertonemyia.bsky.social for a link to submit your talk info for consideration. Hope to see you there!
For the sixth consecutive year, my garden has been graced by this incredibly rare and stunning hoverfly.
A female Callicera spinolae (Ivy Longhorn) today.
My first August record, and five days earlier than last year, which was the previous earliest record.

Fly appreciation post. For a long time my favourite taxon has been diptera or flies, mostly because of the immense variation. Here are 4 of my favourite recent fly shots.
1. Ringed Pixie
2. Antlered flutter fly
3. Eutreta noveboracensis
4. Hystricia abrupta

Every group that stays this research center makes a painting to commemorate so of course I was put in charge to paint it. Really happy with the colors on this one. Its a periscelid dancing on top of a pantophthalmid, our two star flies found during the course! #flyschool2026#diptera#art
Back in civilization after 2 weeks in the Costa Rican jungle. It was an amazing experience full of spectacular flies (+other creatures) as well as a truly wonderful group of students & instructors. The memories made will last a lifetime. βΊοΈ π₯° Can't wait for the next #Diptera adventure! #FlySchool2026

Happy #flyfriday! Looks like a moth but it's a bee fly, genus Lephidophora, apparently a kleptoparasite of solitary vespid and sphecid wasps. Apparently these can be seen in Georgia but are more common up north. Black Rock Forest, NY last month.
#BugSky#flyday#BugShot#diptera
Love this from #FlySchool2026 student @toldentops.bsky.social! π₯°
#Lauxaniidae is one of the most diverse acalyptrate #fly families. Larvae are associated w/leaf litter, thus super abundant/diverse in forests. They are HIGHLY variable so every time a student finds one they think it's a new family π
Check out this extraordinary female Eucelatoria sp (Tachinidae). She possess a sharp piercer that she tucks up underneath her when not being deployed, for oviposition - you can see her ovipositor nestled in this penetrating sheath!
Badass lady!
@dipteracourse.bsky.social#FlySchool2026
TGI #flyfriday!
This pufftail fly has what I'd call a wide stance.
I've never seen anything from this genus (Sphegina) in Georgia; this was in Trondheim, Norway this June.

OK I thought Scutops was cute, but OMG #NEOscutops is amazing! π I'm now convinced #Periscelididae is, per species, the weirdest family of flies (more evidence from another genus to drop later).
#FlySchool2026 Costa Rica
[And yes, @americanbeetles.bsky.social, it's cool partly because of beetle]
Officially the cutest fly I've ever seen π₯° π
It was a target genus of mine & Ezra Bailey was kind enough to save her live specimen for me to photograph [we've been lucky to see more since]. They mostly run around rather than fly.
SQUEEEEEEE!!!!

Heads up folks
Some Tabanidae that were sampled from the Canopy Tower at the Soltis Center, Costa Rica
These images show both differences in eye patterns & antennal branching. Sadly the eye patterns disappear as they desicate so images are important

Be a dipterist. Be in Costa Rica for #FlySchool2026. See a muscoid #fly perching on a leaf. Tell student so they can collect it. Success!! Wait a minute π€ That's not a fly, but weevil mimicking one!
This was so convincing, even rapidly moving & poking its wings out π₯° #Curculionidae: cf. #Mnemynurus
Check out this lovely flag from Muchow, Germany, featuring a lovely fly! Why a fly? Well, in flag design there is a practice called "canting" where elements that sound like place names are used in the heraldry! In this case "Mucha" means fly! Seems like a place I'd want to visit... #FliesAreCool
Cool finds and fascinating flies like this abound on the Team Diptera Discord, where this was originally posted! Come join the conversation and check it out (link in our bio!)

Sometimes you've gotta go metallic to mimic your model! This common tropical hover #fly at the top is a convincing mimic of the local orchid #bees in the genus #Euglossa (bottom).
