Great, now sponsors are increasingly sending out 18 page "briefs" for each product. All AI generated of course, so I can spend 30 minutes nonsense just so I can find the 3 bullet points that contain actual information.

Fuck...and I REALLY mean this...Doug Ford. What a disgrace. Protected bike lanes save lives, give a boost to local businesses, and allow children to get to school on their own. There is nothing fiscally conservative about this move. It's expensive populist nonsense intended to divide us.

In the end, the lanes come out.

Forgot my laptop at home so I am on DEX today all day. Happens once a year or so. Each time I am simultaneously amazed that I can somehow get through a full day fine, while I also don't exactly *love* the experience.

Very excited to say that I'm visiting Tokyo soon & will do my 5th tech travel video from there. If you know the city, please let me know what you think I should visit and film. I want to experience how technology impacts everyday lives in the city.

The new Apple Watch is creepy.

techaltar.bsky.social@techaltar.bsky.social

The new Apple Watch features Audio Intelligence: it constantly listens, transcribes & analyzes everything around itself, including on Apple's servers. Here's what that means for privacy. Nebula: nebula.tv/videos/techa... YouTube: youtu.be/GyxYEYsNUn4

You know how YouTube recently inflated viewcounts massively by starting to count ever single frame played as an active view? Like all YouTubers I know, I've been trying to wrap my head around what the "real" views on my videos are comapred to what they used to be. (🧡1/6)

Meanwhile TFC is habit-based. It has a very high likelyhood to get a click from a returning viewer, but isn't a great pitch to a random person on a homescreen so YT doesn't promote it as much. This means Submerged gets many people playing it for a few frames as they scroll over it while TFC doesn't.

If my theory is correct this means channels who have a loyal returning audience got a much smaller bump (in this case half as big) and so they now look like they get fewer relative views! Since audiences and sponsors both tend to view high view counts as a signal, this is a real disadvantage! (🧡6/6)

Not only is it a lot, I also find it wild how the inflation is *way* stronger on some videos than others. On our latest Submerged video it is 3.2x, on the latest episode of The Friday Checkout it is 1.6x!!! (🧡3/6)

My best guess is that Submerged is "home page content" meaning it gets broadly promoted on the home page of many people who have no concept of the channel & therefore are likely to scroll over it. It's sth YT is trying to push to a generalist audience who will always be less likely to click.(🧡4/6)

The best metric we have is an "engaged view", which is hidden in analytics, but is more or less the same number that used to just be called a "view" before this change was made. So you can take a video and compare engaged views vs. views to see how much the public numbers have been inflated. (🧡2/6)

- The Bab el Mandeb (and with it Red Sea shipping) in the process of being blocked right now - Hormuz mostly blocked - Russia at war - Trump seizing South American oil Hmm, I wonder whether we should switch to renewables or just build yet another gas plant & keep buying ICE cars or something πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

The least exciting thing about the iPhone Duo is it's weight (and a little bit it's thickness). 254g is as heavy as the Fold 5 was. I had that phone and the weight was the most annoying thing about it. Compared to the Fold 8 (see image) it feels like it's in a different class

Overall Duo thoughts from a Foldable user! + Many interesting software ideas, like the side dock + I think they said the foldable screen has glass on the outside & is scratch resistant?? + IP68 + Under-display camera looks cool + Price is not as bad as I feared - I personally think it looks ugly

Since Spotify now supports video, ~3 months ago I decided to try uploading my Friday Checkout episodes to it to see if it offers any real diversification. I intentionally didn't promote it much elsewhere in order to see if Spotify's algo picked up the channel & found an audience for it directly. 1/2

I think the answer pretty much seem to be a no. The audience has grown a tiny bit, but is still miniscule, with no breakout success in sight. Maybe the videos just aren't a good fit for the platform, but I am a little disappointed overall 2/2

X shuts down apps that show its posts. Bluesky exists to ernable it. One of these networks is about promoting freedom, the other is not.

nitter.net is down. xcancel.com may go soon, too. all the respect to the folks at nitter for their services so far, but to be honest, X completely locking itself out of the web is probably a net positive for us all in the long term
