X shuts down apps that show its posts. Bluesky exists to ernable it. One of these networks is about promoting freedom, the other is not.

nitter.net is down. xcancel.com may go soon, too. all the respect to the folks at nitter for their services so far, but to be honest, X completely locking itself out of the web is probably a net positive for us all in the long term

in the atmosphere. straight up "ernabling it". and by "it", haha, well. let's justr say. my pdses

I was on Tumblr the night we lost editing privileges, and I don't actually think we should have them here, but it's still funny. Also, what we lost was the ability to edit posts we were reblogging to make it look like OP had said something else and it's *crazy* that that was ever a thing.

building out the latest web: web3 or web4 if those are labels people like to use; so it feels like a real space for enterprise, collaboration, and discovery. 🦋🪿 Or what seems to be happening over there, putting up bars on the windows; locking the doors from the outside.

The solution is to tarnish Musk's reputation among his fan base. You can do that if you focus on how pro-censorship he is. Just look at all the "Probable spam" sections at the end of most tweets. See any spam there? No, most of those Musk censors are completely innocent. Point that out to his base

This is not the same thing, but the single most common reason my friends won’t use Bluesky is because when is end them a post via iPhone text message it doesn’t show the post, but instead directs them to the app. I think this is a setting on some posts. Everyone hates this.

I do not. Other people do. Sometimes other people with this setting enabled make good posts I would like to share with my friends who are not on this app. Their reaction is “I’m not dealing with this weird bullshit”

Also any time the answer is “have you gone into your settings” the ux design is bad. I don’t want to go into my settings. I want to share things with my friends that make them laugh. I’m an idiot, not some pervert with a computer science degree.

Like what’s the point of this from the perspective of either a user’s experience inside this app, the company’s desire to spread use of the app, or someone receiving this in a text instead of the actual post?

It was an unintended consequence of the setting - to fix it, we will have to make it so that the post page's metadata shows the post content to logged out users. I think we should look at doing that, but it's a shift from the setting's intent

Feeling extremely cross-pressured. On the one hand, "free speech maximalists" lol. OTOH, preventing Twitter's spread seems like the sort of thing we should all get behind.

On Monday 24th August at 8PM EST, we received at letter from X Corp. asking to cease and desist the service XCancel. The service XCancel is stopped until further notice. We are seeking legal advice and won't share more details for now. Thank you for the trust you have put in these two years of XCanc

Maybe this can be the cue to government agencies across the country that they need to be on a different platform to disseminate important information.

The thing that made Twitter such a killer social media app is that you could post a simple link to any tweet and everyone could see it. Didn't need an account. That was a powerful way to spread a message. Locking things down as X has just makes it less likely I'll go there at all.
