Crepuscurious: Feeling an inexplicable pull to investigate, tinker, or start something new as evening falls. It’s the restless, wondering mood that comes over you at dusk.

I'm 46 today. ~35 years ago, my dad had a heart attack cutting firewood and died, aged 45. He left behind a wife of thirteen years, a daughter, and a son. I'm very happy to still be here today with my wife of twenty years and my son. And with all of you, who inspire and fascinate me every day.

I used to have friends where I'd visit and they'd say, "hey, take a hit off this, I'm listening to _Animals_." And now it's all "I drank a quart of metamucil and I'm listening to _Live at the Village Vanguard_."

i’m on shibbi side here i disagree with her about the slavery thing, but holy shit i am mega against a supposed news outlet just basically pointing and laughing at an individual social media user for saying something they find unreasonable 404, y’all fucked up mega hard here and owe an apology

I really enjoy working and interacting with AI. I am excited to be able to study such rich and interesting new intelligent actors and how they interact with their environments and each other in different scenarios. I hope I can spend the rest of my life doing this 🙂

Which is worse? - everyone in the world loses a dollar and gets a digital copy of the new U2 album force-downloaded to their devices - the population of Paducah, KY is permanently consigned to the hell dimension

Why introduce hedonic calculus and its problems into your loss-of-control taxonomy when you could just add another dimension? Are we that afraid of concepts with > 2 dimensions?

Thinking about Ideonomy in less of what I see as a Gunkel process of exhaustively listing properties or variations, instead considering its affordances (Gibson, ecological psychology). "What is this idea, to me, at this time?"

Going through old tickets and remembering a multi-year database corruption saga caused by a 3rd-party module that manifested in different forms of corruption with subtly different but overlapping behaviors that caused new forms of corruption if/when the wrong fix was applied to a given record.

Perhaps we should move beyond a rudimentary grasp of history and take time to consider the various factors that have determined the speed of diffusion of each new technology through the economy and whether those apply to generative AI, and to what degree.

In the case of generative AI, there have been technical limitations (the number of r's in "strawberry", nightmarish burritos), but the capital costs and structural issues are largely borne and addressed by the internet and smart phones.

Whatever your personal feelings, or whether you think I'm right or wrong on my analysis, I think it's a bad idea to appeal to a historical pattern without contemplating why the pattern appears to exist and why the contributing factors may not apply in this (or any particular) case.

In the case of electricity, technical limitations like short transmission distances, massive capital costs, and structural issues. In the case of tractors, technical limitations like unreliability, massive capital costs, and structural issues (tight margins and credit).

In the case of the internet, technical limitations were probably less of an issue, but capital costs for internet ready devices and subscription fees, and... structural issues ("the last mile", the enormity of the US and its urban/rural population distribution, etc).

Can someone tell me a story? Tell me about your first engineering job. Especially if it was awful. Tell me how bad it got. Tell me how long you stayed, out of misplaced loyalty or self-doubt or twisted work ethic. Tell me how you finally escaped. Anyone else out there grieving four entire years?

When malignant narcissists and self-styled intellectuals find themselves about to fade back into near-total irrelevance after a brief period of prominence, they'll say anything just to tread the zeitgeist a moment longer. Ignore 'em. Let 'em drown.

I had a dream that I was hanging out in a friend's college dorm and he had a lot of VHS tapes that he really treasured. I bit into one of them, hard, so the plastic splintered and shattered and the videotape started unspooling and unwinding. I kept biting and chewing, and swallowing the tape.

There were big frogs on some of the leaves. Big weird frogs that looked like Wallace Shawn. I greeted one of them and it yawned in a friendly manner. I said hi again and it yawned again. I placed my shoulder down by the leaf and he climbed up onto my head agreeably. I now had Frog Helmet.

A woman who saw me frowned. She leaned in and plucked a piece of videotape out of the corner of my mouth. I could still feel the other shards, embedded in my tongue. The frog was heavy. I looked up and realized it wasn't a frog. It was a cat. And then I woke up.

I walked out of the room, plagued with guilt, and I was gonna buy him a new TV to apologize. I asked him if he could use a new one and he said yeah, I asked him what size and he said "1080p by 1080i" and I tried to explain that wasn't a thing.

Outside, I realized I was in Florida. I caught a ride in the back of a black pickup with a guy and his daughter who were taking trash to the dump. The girl had Down's syndrome. I headed back into town from the dump and wandered into a mall - a big mall with an indoor tropical rain forest.

When it was about a quarter consumed, I tucked it beneath my body and grabbed another. I ate several of his tapes this way, burying them under my body. Then I stood up and tried to act normal.

Back when I was a server at a Black Eyed Pea in Bellaire Texas, summer o' 2000, there was a fella there who went by the name o' Jesse Dangerfield (RIP). Jesse was a big beautiful black man. His favorite band was Smashing Pumpkins.
