"How is one to live a moral and compassionate existence when one finds darkness not only in one's culture but in oneself? There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light." - Barry Lopez

"All stories are a response to the world in some way, but fantasy is very often a response to landscape," writes Susanna Clarke in the Observer. Her new story, The Bishop of Durham Attempts to Surrender the City, is out now from Bloomsbury & it's utterly wonderful. observer.co.uk/culture/book...

The post that Dr Davies links to below provides yet another good example of why human research, thought, experience, and creativity cannot be replicated by machines.

I'm very much enjoying Perilous Enchantment: The True History of Faeries by folklore historian Sarah Clegg (author Women's Lore and The Dead of Winter, also recommended).

Change of plan. This arrived. #NewIllustrationOfTheDay by Laura Carlin from Lena and the Bear. Text by Katya Balen. Walker Books 8 Oct. An image that is all softness and warmth in a book about love, accepting difference and the need to be yourself, and about letting go. @walkerbooksuk.bsky.social

"Faulkner, who was a socialist like Morris, would visit {Red House] regularly and spend weekends there. 'They [the women in Morris’s circle] used to sit around and embroider together....She was there –- the women were all there. They can’t possibly not have been part of the conversation.'" Indeed.

I had the honor of writing the introduction for Folio Society's new collection of Grimms' Fairy Tales, a delightful yet daunting task, and I had a wonderful time revisiting these stories in these woods. This edition contains 50 tales and is beautifully illustrated by Sophy Hollington.

This is an amazing, unique project: I feel so honoured to be a part of it…

Terri Windling@terriwindling.bsky.social

Thank you to everyone posting about Brian & Wendy Froud's new book, containing 72 new paintings with literary responses by 37 women writers of diverse backgrounds, landscapes & mythic traditions. Having worked on the project for the last two years, we've all been moved by the enthusiastic response.

Speaking of amazing illustrators, the Austrian artist Lizbeth Zwerger is one of the very best.

If you want a good starting point for collecting Lizbeth Zwerger books I would recommend her Hans Andersen collection. It’s my favourite

I had to make the same decision when I got an offer for Wooing the Witch Queen from a Russian publisher on the condition that Saskia & Ailana would be rewritten as straight. As someone who makes her living through writing, it hurts to turn down $ for food and bills, but I couldn't say yes to that.

Have had that horrible experience of being asked to change the briefest paragraph in one of my books so a particular foreign publisher could avoid arrest in that country’s massive LGBTQ+ crackdown. I had to decline and therefore not be published - you don’t negotiate with tyrants - but what a world.

Happy Publication Day! I can't wait to tuck into this....

My novel Unspeakable Things is out today — here's the latest (short) review in Book Pages, with an accompanying interview. Thanks so much to everyone who pre-ordered the book and offered support — I'm very grateful!

I'm reposting this because it's coming up soon. I very much wish I could be there....
